The Chinese have historically been avid travellers. Centuries before Marco Polo made his famous journey half-way across the world, Chinese traders, scholars and monks had voyaged as far west’s Afghanistan and as far south as Sumatra. And when Melaka was established as one of the world’s great trading centres in the fifteenth century, even more Chinese flocked to the city. Some of the Chinese traders decided to move there permanently and took Malay wives.
The descendants of these Sino-Malay marriages became known as Straits Chinese or Peranakan and their way of life, language, food customs and dressing have become ask amalgamation of Chinese and Malay and develop a style uniquely their own. The ladies are called ‘Nyonya’ and the men ‘Baba’.
The basic essentials in ‘Nyonya’ cooking are lemon grass, galangal, coconut milk, chillies and limes as well as palm sugar, glutinous rice flour and screw pine leaves. In addition, our aromatic exotic spices complement these ingredients to afford a most delectable cuisine pleasure.
