The Biology Image Library is:

• An online subscription-based database of scientific images across 7 areas of life sciences and medical research, with over 27 000 images available.

• Areas covered include: Developmental Biology, Histology & Pathology, Microbiology & Parasitology, Molecular & Cellular Biology, Neuroscience, Immunology and Plant Biology.

• All independently submitted images are peer reviewed to ensure that images are of a good quality and that their descriptions are scientifically accurate.

Imagine you are a lecturer looking for images for a first year module on bacteriology. Your institute is a subscriber to the Biology Image Library, so you can log in and begin browsing the library content in the area you

think is most relevant

Or you could do a ‘quick search’ for images in your chosen subject

… your results look like this:

We can order and filter results here using the ‘Display >’ drop-downs

If there are more images than you require, then you can refine the search to something more specific

If you are not a subscriber or not logged in, you would only see

but if you are logged in and a subscriber, then you can see a fullsize view of each image

Images of interest to you can be saved to our Saved items (using ‘Save checked items and go to next page >’) or they can be sent straight to a

slideset (using’ Send >’)

From your ‘Saved items’ you can closely compare images and move them to a slideset

Slidesets are customisable, based on the slideset as a whole

or individual images

You can view the slideset in order to make sure you are happy with it

And then download the slideset as a PowerPoint presentation

The PowerPoint file you download contains all the image and credit information and you can then add more of our own work if necessary

If you have problems using the site, there are instructions on viewing images, creating and downloading slidesets

There is also information on how to submit images to the library

And on how to subscribe to the library in the ‘About the library’ page, or you can contact us

The library has a well-respected editorial board and some ed board members even contribute images themselves

You can also follow the library on our Twitter account @BiologyImageLib to keep up to date with new images being uploaded

Here are some examples of terms you can use in search to demonstrate a nice mixture of images

To demonstrate aspects of search function (best used in advanced search):

‘Bacteria AND Scanning electron*’

‘Mitosis’ (refine search to Molecular & Cellular Biology)

‘Embryo’ (refine to search for movies only)

‘Oryza’ (display by title)

‘GFP AND confocal’

Basic search terms (can be used in both

quick and advanced search):

‘Malaria’

‘Microtubule’

‘Signaling’ (use US not UK spelling)

‘Influenza’

‘Alzheimer’

‘Spindle’

‘Axons’

NOTE: use without quotes
