FACETisdelightedtopartnerwithTourismWA,DepartmentofBiodiversity,ConservationandAttractions,ParksandWildlifeServiceandtheWesternAustralianIndigenousTourismOperatorsCouncil(WAITOC)topresentthishalf-dayworkshopon‘WALeadingthewayinAboriginalTourism’.

Theworkshopwillshowcaseandcelebratesomeoftheaward-winningandinnovativeprogramsthatarebeingrolledouttosupportthedevelopmentofAboriginaltourismexperiencesthroughouttheState.

TheprogramincludesanoverviewoftheroleofWAITOCinsupportingandmentoringAboriginaltourismbusinessesandprovidesaninsightintotwosuccessfulandinnovativeprograms,‘CampingwithCustodians’and‘CultureintheParks’.

TheworkshopwillbeinteractiveandwillincludebothorganisationalandoperatorpresentationsandperspectivesacrossthethreeAboriginaltourismdevelopmentalprograms.

ItwilldemonstratewhatcanbeachievedthroughcollaborationandpartnershipsandweavethrougharangeofAboriginalculturalexperiencesthatcanbeincorporatedintomainstreamtourismproduct.

Theprogramwillincludepresentations,afternoonteaincorporatingAboriginalbushtucker foodsandanAboriginalculturalexperienceontheSwanRiver.

WesternAustralianIndigenousTourismOperatorsCouncil(WAITOC)WAITOCisthepeaknotforprofitassociationrepresentingAboriginaltourismoperatorsfromallregionsthroughoutWesternAustralia.TheassociationprovidesadviceandinformationtoallrelevantStateGovernmentagenciesaswellasthetourismindustrysector.TheoverridingpurposeofWAITOCistopromoteAboriginaltourismbyprovidingasupportivenetworkforAboriginaltourismoperatorswithinWA.WAITOC’sAboriginalTourismProductDevelopmentProgram(ATPD)hasbeendesignedtogenerateeconomicandcommunitybenefitsandiscurrentlyfocussedontheKimberlyandtheSouthWesttourismregions.WAITOChasrecentlyreceivedadditionalfundingforthePerthregion(PATPD).

CampingwithCustodiansCampingwithCustodiansofferstheexperienceofcampingonWesternAustralianAboriginallands. Theinitiative,developedbyTourismWA, providesanopportunityfortravellers tostayonAboriginallandsandinteract withthe locals,knowingthattheproceedsoftheirstaywillremaininthecommunity. Itprovides anopportunityforatrulyextraordinary Australianexperience.CampingwithCustodians providesparticipantcommunities withenterpriseandemploymentopportunities. Enterprises includegoodsandservicessuchasguidedtours,culturalawarenessandimmersionprojects,artsales,andtraditionalcookingdemonstrations. Inmanyinstancesthecampgroundwillprovidethecatalysttoarangeofuniqueculturalexperiences,showcasingAustralianAboriginalcountryandculture.

CultureintheParksTheDepartmentofBiodiversity,ConservationandAttractionsrecognisestheuniqueroleAboriginalpeoplehaveasTraditionalOwnersofthelandsandwatersitmanages. Insupportofthis,theCultureintheParks programhasbeendeveloped,andaimstopromotereconciliationandfosterstrongrespectfulworkingrelationshipswithAboriginalpeople.TheprogramencouragesAboriginalpeopletoprovidearangeofuniquetourismexperiencesthatshowcaseandcelebratethediversityoftheirculturetovisitorsontheconservationestateandeducatethecommunityabouttheirvalues.TheCultureintheParks programwillprovidevisitorstotheState’snaturalareas,accesstoawiderangeofuniqueculturalexperiences,providingapointofdifferencetootherdestinations. Mostimportantly,theprogramsupportsthemaintenanceandpreservationoftheworld’soldestlivingculture.

TroyBennell,Ngalang WongiAboriginalCulturalToursTroyhastravelledextensivelythroughoutEuropeandAsia,asanartist,culturalperformer,gallerycuratorandambassadorfortourisminAustralia.ProudofhisNoongarheritage,hiscountryandtheplacewherehegrewup,TroyhascombinedthosepassionsintoNgalang WongiAboriginalCulturalToursanduseshisskillsintourismandstorytellingtopromotehisgreatestpassion...hishomelandandtheculturalheritageofhispeople.AsanacclaimedAustralianartist,TroyhasbeeninvolvedwithmanyofthepublicartprojectsinandaroundBunbury.TroyalsoworksextensivelywithlocalIndigenousyouthandisinvolvedindeveloping‘oncountry’programsaimedathelpingatriskyoungpeoplethroughinteractionwithpositiverolemodelsfromwithintheirlocalcommunity.

GaryTaylor,ProjectManagerTourismWesternAustraliaGaryTaylorisManageroftheKimberleyCampingwithCustodiansproject,aninitiativeaimedattheassemblyoflandforthedevelopmentandoperationofcommercialcampinggroundsonAboriginallands.Garyhas25yearsofexperienceworkingincommunityandregionaldevelopmentandinthemanagementandoperationoftourismventuresinthenorthofWesternAustralia.Heisastrongadvocatefortourismasawayofnotonlyenablingincomeandemploymentinremoteareas,butalsopresentingopportunityfortheshowcasingofuniquelifestylesandculture.

RosemaryNuggett isaseniorGoonyandi womenandChairpersonoftheMimbi communityeastofFitzroyCrossingintheKimberley. RosemaryisanexperiencedguidewhohasofferedtoursofthewellknownMimbi Cavesandotherareassincethe1990s.SheisaDirectorofLeedal,aProprietaryLimitedcompanywithamajorstakeineconomicinfrastructureandenterprisedevelopmentinFitzroyCrossing. Rosemaryisastrongadvocateforself-determinationandforadvancementofherpeoplethrougheconomicdevelopment.Sheispassionateinherpursuitofenterprisethroughhighqualityandculturallyrespectfultourismdevelopment. TheMimbi communityhaspartneredwithbothTourismWAandWAITOCinthedevelopmentofaCampingwithCustodianscampgroundnearhercommunity.

SheistheManagerofAboriginalParticipationandInvolvementattheDepartmentofBiodiversity,ConservationandAttractions(DBCA).InthisroleRhondamanagestheAboriginalHeritageUnitandoverseestheimplementationoftheDepartment’sspecificAboriginalstrategies.RhondahasextensiveexperienceandknowledgeinAboriginalcommunitydevelopmentandengagement.Heremploymenthistoryincludesworkinginoperationalandpolicydevelopmentinthegovernment,non-governmentandIndigenoussectorandshealsohasexperienceasaself-employedconsultant.RhondaiscommittedtoaddressingtheadvancementofastrongfutureforAboriginalpeople,shapedbyAboriginalleadershipandworkinginpartnershipwithfellowAustralians throughthespiritofReconciliation.

Tahn DonovanisaWardandi YokwomanfromBusseltonandisthecurrentChairpersonofWAITOC.Tahn hasadeepunderstandingoftheWesternAustralianbiodiversityvaluesandthewidevarietyoflandscapes,peopleandexperiences.DiversityisakeycharacteristicofTahn’s careerpath,whichispavedwithawiderangeofskillsandexperienceinthefarming,transport,environmental,disabilityemployment,andhospitality/tourismindustries.SheiscurrentlyinvolvedinLeadershipandGovernancetrainingtotheNoongarcommunityinthedevelopmentanddeliveryofprograms.TahnisalsocreatorofMax’sBlackSauceabushherinfusedsaucethatcapturestheflavoursofAustraliaandestablishedthelabelDeadlyDivasClothing.“TourismoffersAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpeoplestheopportunitytotellourstories,careforourcountryandcultureandbuildeconomicindependenceforourfamiliesandcommunities”.
