Visit review of Pak Musa Chemicals MultanA Sulfuric Acid Plant

Presented/Prepared by Raja Wajahat

Process Summary1. Combining of sulfur and oxygen

2. Purifying sulfur dioxide in the purification unit;

3. Adding excess of oxygen to sulfur dioxide in presence of catalyst vanadium pentoxide, with temperatures of 450 degrees Celsius and pressure of 1-2 atm.;

4. Sulfur trioxide formed is added to sulfuric acid which gives rise to oleum (disulfuricacid);

5. The oleum then is added to water to form sulfuric acid which is very concentrated.

Key PointsAll the equipment were made of MS

Big Equipment had Porcelain Lining

Pumps had SS impellers, and special alloys body

The Process Streams need cooling again and again because all the reactions are exothermic

Same Catalyst was being used for last 4-5 years

30 TPD production of the plant

18 employees in total

3 technicians

About 3-4 acre land, 0.5 acre covered

Sulfur Storage

Sulfur Melting PitsSteam Coiled inside the pits

Solid Sulfur to Liquid Sulfur

Sulfur Combustion ChamberS + O2 SO2

Liquid Sulfur + Excess Air

Exothermic Reaction, Maintains its temperature itself

Attached to Waste Heat Boiler

Quartz Filled Gas FilterRemoves impurities from SO2 Gas

Also Cools the gas

ConverterSO2-> SO3, V2O5 filled, 4 beds of catalyst, 8 thermal sensors, 2 for each bed, extended lines for increased surface area for cooling,
