#5A few words of Caution

What Could Go Wrong?

18

Baltimore - Ransomware and Extortion

● Attack on May 7, 2019 - RobbinHood encrypted hard drive data

● Hackers demanded $76K in bitcoin

● Baltimore said NO - estimated costs of $18.2M in lost or delayed revenue and direct costs to restore services

What affected?● All servers taken offline except

“essential services”. Not all back up until mid-June?

● More than 1500 real estate sales delayed - no water or property tax bills

● Affected hospitals, factories producing vaccines, airports etc…

● Baltimore failed to budget to insure against cybercrime, train and protect

Other cities attacked- Atlanta $17M to repair the damage; Riviera Beach FL paid $600K and Lake City FL pid $500K to get data unlocked
