Behavioural Theories

Leadership theories that identify behaviours that differentiate effective leaders for

ineffective leaders.

The University of Iowa

The university of Iowa studies explored 3

Leadership styles;

• Autocratic style

• Democratic style

• Laissez-faire style

Lewin and the boys

Lewin and his associates researched which one of the leadership styles were

most effective.

Their results seemed to indicate that the democratic style contributed to both

good quantity and quality of work.

Further Results

The earlier test results proved that democratic style showed higher

performance levels than autocratic style, but other tests proved that lower or equal

performance levels were produced by democratic style.

The University of Ohio

It began with over 1,000 behavioural dimensions, and researchers were able to narrow it down to 2 categories;

• Consideration

• Initiating structure

Definitions

• Initiating Structure: The extent to which a leader is likely to define and structure his or her role and the roles of group members in the search for goal attainment.

• Consideration: The extent to which a leader has job relationships characterized by mutual trust and respect for group members’ ideas and feelings.

Leaders who are high in both initiating structure and consideration behaviours are

considered high-high leaders.

High-high leaders achieved high group task performance and satisfaction more

frequently.
