MacRitchie

Why?We chose MacRitchie as the next UNESCO world heritage site as there are

many different species of flora and fauna there. During our trip to MacRitchie and Sungei Buloh, we saw more different types of animals and plants at MacRitchie. Also, MacRitchie was bigger than Sungei Buloh and we got closer to nature in MacRitchie. MacRitchie had a longer history than Sungei Buloh too. Thus we feel that MacRitchie should be the next UNESCO site instead of Sungei Buloh.

History of MacRitchie

• MacRitchie Reservoir was constructed in 1867 through a donation of S$13,000 by philanthropist Tan Kim Seng, as the first reservoir in Singapore.

• It was built as there was an increase in demand in water in the mid 19th century.

• It was extended and enlarged in 1891 and was renamed Thomson Road Reservoir in 1907.

• It was then renamed to MacRitchie Reservoir in honour of the Municipal Engineer, James MacRitchie.
