Article abstractMost methods for evaluating the coverage rate of deaths in countries wherestatistics are deficient rely not only on a hypothesis of stable populationgrowth, but also on constancy of age-specific death registration rates. However,on the one hand, the hypothesis of population stability is not really necessary, but can readily be replaced by one of Malthusian population. On the other, thequality of estimates is obviously affected by the adequacy of the hypothesesbehind the methods from which they are derived. Thus a new methodologicalapproach is proposed, based on the principle that a population in transitioncan be considered as a set of Malthusian populations, each one correspondingto a given age group. This new approach enables estimates of deathregistration rates by age.
