Community Center BuildingConstructed in 2001

Wood siding was removed and re-used as shuttering forms for the interior Hemcrete walls

A layer of OSB board was under the wood siding. This was also removed then re-used for the temporary support of the exterior Hemcrete wall

OSB board is removed carefully then cleaned and set aside

Cross-bracing installed to stiffen corners

The first interior shuttering forms installed ripped from the 5/8” wood siding securedin place with 8” hex-head deck screws

Mixing Begins…

Hemcrete Materials

Hemp Lime Binder

MIX DESIGN:One Bag of Hemp ShivTwo Bags of Hemp Lime BinderThree Buckets of Water

Hemcrete staged on plywood at mixing stationMaterial can rest up to 6hrs before placement

Transfer to wheelbarrows

This batch was mixed with too much water and was spread on plywood and allowed to dry-out in the sun for a couple of hoursprior to placement

Installation of metal lath

This building required the use of metal lath on the exterior due to the wood framing not being encased in Hemcrete. The interior walls did not require metal lath as the Hemcrete material covers the wood framing by four full inches.

Re-attach OSB board back over metal lath to keep Hemcrete straight

Hemcrete is staged on floor for easy transfer to walls

Hemcrete is shoveled in by hand in six inch layers

Hemcrete is lightly tamped down with the end of a 2x4

2x4 tamping board

Next layer is added

Ready for next shuttering form to be installed

End of Day Two – 14 May 2008

120 cubic feet of Hemcrete placed

Remove the shuttering forms as soon as possible to allow the Hemcrete material to draw in the CO2 from the atmosphere which starts the carbonation process

INTERIOR: A two coat lime plaster will be applied directly to this rough surface texture of the Hemcrete after about one week

EXTERIOR: The exterior Hemcrete walls will receive a two coat hydraulic lime (½”) render after one week drying time. The new lime render will be finished with a beautiful natural earth limewash

End of Day Three – 15 May 2008

200 cubic feet of Hemcrete placed
