DESIGN: ENRICHES LIVES
Bold new bathtub
DESIRE RORKE
A
small change canmake a world of differ-
ence a powerful insight grasped by two
local design students at the Bellville
branch of CPUT, when they designed an inno-
vative product that can change the way mil-
lions of poor South Africans live today.
Carmen Johnson (24) from Brackenfell and
Chenjerai Kamushinda (37) from
Kraaifontein, designed a plastic
floor bathing tub for shacks, which
was recently chosen as one of 16 fi-
nalist designs in the Shift, Fresh
Talent Sustainable Design Compe-
tition.
The first prototype, when com-
pleted, will be exhibited through-
out the country next year and at a
prestigious Swedish design exhibi-
tion during 2013.
The plastic floor bathing tub, is
a specially designed bathtub
for use in small spaces com-
mon in shacks in townships
and made out of recycled plas-
tic. The bathtub can be easily
put up or folded away when
not in use.
According to Carmen, they
had to come up with a sustain-
able product,
which would not
only enrich the
lives of people in
informal settle-
ments, but also
have a positive im-
pact on the environment.
The pair were prompted to look
at ideas after Chenjerai told Car-
men about the very limited sanita-
tion conditions for shack dwellers
in Wallacedene.
The designers then em-
barked on a fact-finding mis-
sion in the Embacweni infor-
mal settlement, and this design
was the outcome.
According to Carmen, on av-
erage five or six people live in
one shack and share one porta-
ble toilet outside. They have no
baths and are forced to undress
in front of the family to wipe
themselves clean with a bucket
of water inside the shack.
This they do without any
formof privacy, afterwhich the
dirty water is simply thrown
outside.
Hence, the Plastic Floor Bathing Tub.
The product itself is a floor tub, compact
enough to fit into a shack floor with a plastic
covering around it.

It will allow an adult person to bath
inprivacy,while standing or sitting.
At its base it has an outlet connect-
ed to a pipe, which is in turn con-
nected to an underground or surface
water collection system that leads to
a communal water cleansing sta-
tion.
In thisway thewater can be recy-
cled and used again for communal
gardens for instance, without be-
coming a pollutant to the environ-
ment, Carmen says.
For Chenjerai sustainable living
means that we have to unlearn
most of the bad habits that we have
been using in the way we produce
our products and the way we con-
sume them.
With their design plan the pair al-
so suggested that people in the infor-
mal settlements be motivated to col-
lect plastic and other refuse, in ex-
change for a free tub set.
Both Carmen and Chenjerai are
ecstatic about their design reaching
the finals, but now have their work
cut out for them.
We now have six months to man-
ufacture a prototype, before thewin-
ners are announced on 15 Febru-
ary, says Carmen.
We have a mentor to assist us
with the practicalities and we are
very excited about it all.
The three winners will be award-
ed prizes to the value of R7 000,
R5 000 and R3 000, respectively and
go on a knowledge exchange trip to
Sweden to learn more about the
Scandinavian ways of sustainable
living and design.

Local finalists not just pretty faces
Two Kuils River beauties, Danelle de Wet and Stacey Webb,
were appointed as two of 12 Miss South Africa finalists over
the weekend at Sun City.
Danelle de Wet (19) is a model from Kuils
River. She is currently studying towards a
science degree (BSc) in medical biosciences at
The University of the Western Cape. In her free
time Danelle likes to stay active by training in
Muaythai, running half marathons and pilates.
Stacey Webb from Kuils River
is a Miss South Africa finalist.
This 23-year-old beauty is a
law student. She says her role
models are the unspoken
heroes, ordinary people who
work hard to help those in
need. They are her role models
because they are selfless,
bring hope and teach love.

DESIRE RORKE
N
oemmymammaasseblief, het n
oorstelpte Ina Veldtsman ges
weer soos n klein dogtertjie wanneer ek
aan haar dink. By ons eerste ontmoeting n
Obsessief
Vir Marietjie, wat op Piketberg grootge-
word het by haar aanneemouers, was hier-
die naarstigtelike soektog na haar biologie-
se ma amper obsessief.
Ek moes weet vanwaar ek kom, en waar
ek hoort.
stuurwaar haar baba aangeneem souword.
Ongehude swangerskap was n groot
skande in daardie jare, en jong meisies is
doodeenvoudig in die laaste maande van
hul swangerskap weggestuur, s Marie-
tjie. Haar baba is by geboorte onmiddellik
tjie.
Ina het destyds n nie-openbaarmakings-
aanneming geteken, wat beteken het sy sou
nooit na haar kind kon soek nie. Sy is later
getroud, maar het nooit weer kinders gehad
nie.
Marietjie het intussen op n jong ouder-
dom uitgevind dat sy aangeneem is, maar
het uit respek vir haar aanneemouers ge-
talm met die soektog. N die afsterwe van
haar aanneemouers het Marietjie egter op
30-jarige ouderdom doelgerig begin soek.
baie draaie gemaak in verskeie Bolandse
Ek kon nie glo alles het so vinnig gebeur
nie, en voor ek my kon kry, was ek op pad
Robertson toe. Die padwas lank enmy bene
was jellie.
kyk, maar haar gesig was vertrek in rou
emosie.
Dis asof ek in n spiel kyk. Ek kan nou nog
nie glo ek het my ma gekry nie, en is dank-
baar vir die tyd wat ons nog oor het om n
leeftyd se ondervindinge in te haal.
Marietjie en Ina tydens
hul eerste ontmoeting.

Vital to give in festive time
Staff from Vital Health Foods in Kuils River visited the creche in Mfuleni recently on an
outreach project. It was a rewarding day not only for the children, but all those involved.
Giving to others during the festive season
is vital!
This was the case on the morning of Fri-
day 23 November when staff from Vital
Health factory in Kuils River reached out
to children in Mfuleni.
A press release issued by the company
says the staff adopted the Ncedolwethu
Creche in Mfuleni as their chosen charity,
to which they sponsor monthly groceries.
In the spirit of Christmas employees took
this commitment to a greater height when
they visited the facility to not only hand
over the grocery donation, but also give
each child a Christmas Shoe Box.
The children seemed excited about the
shoe boxes, containing toiletries, clothing,
educational items and toys.
Wilmari Beyers, Vital Health Foods tal-
ent manager, said: We felt that this partic-
ular establishment provided an ideal plat-
form through which to channel this good-
will, as it is a cause very close to Vitals
heart.
Company employees agreed to take part
inmonthly grocery donations to the creche,
sponsoring various listed products or con-
tributing individual monetary amounts to
cover the initiatives needs.
Florence Dodovu, whomanages the facil-
ity in Mfuleni was very thankful for the
companys kind gesture. I wish I could do
more for the kids, and it seems the Al-
mighty has answered my prayers, said
Florence, who manages more than 47 chil-
dren, and cares for nine abandoned chil-
dren. Shealso offers avariety of after school
activities for local children.
Herplans for theECD facility is to expand
the creche to be able to accommodate more
community children.

The Men for Change (MFC), an organisa-
tion consisting of local male police offic-
ers, have found a way to make a small dif-
ference with a huge impact.
The organisation is geared towards
making a positive difference at the police
stations, where they serve, to improve so-
cial circumstances of the employees and
the community.
Members of the MFC decided to equip
the victim support rooms of the three po-
lice stations in their cluster Kleinvlei,
Kuils River and Mfuleni with snacks.
Capt Nomathemba Muavha, communi-
cations officer of the Mfuleni police, says:
The men of these stations embarked on
a project of collecting money amongst
themselves in order for them to equip the
victim friendly rooms of the different sta-
tions.
Themen donated tea or coffee, groceries
and biscuits. Muavha said: This initia-
tive was sparked by seeing the volunteers
that work tirelessly in the trauma room
and to also provide for the victims while
they are being attended to.
The handover of the goodies was done
last week.

Joy at early Christmas gifts

Daycare. PHOTO: TANDYLEE MARINUS
MARZANNE SCHEEPERS
Learners of the Kuils River Technical High
School recently shared in Christmas festiv-
ities when they donated gift boxes to the
children of Swhazger Daycare in Kalkfon-
tein.
That big present is mine! seven-year-
old Chzan-LukeHenniker from the daycare
anxiously told his fellow classmates as the
Kuils River High School learners entered
the room with large boxes, all filled with
gifts.
Initiated by Betsie Arendse, the Kuils
River High School Interact Society group
came together this year with the aim to
reach out to those less fortunate.
The group identified Swhazger Daycare
and decided to provide the children with
Christmas gifts. The name of the daycare
itself means Helping people from A to Z
and the teachers try to provide the children
with everything they can.
We started selling popcorn and hotdogs
at school and then used the money to buy
the presents. We also got our whole school
involved by asking for donations, Interact
chairperson, SimoneHendricks, explained.
The different gift boxes contained cloth-
ing and presents for the children as well as
canned foods, which the group raised
through a project they called Yes we can.
It warmsmy heart to know that we have
accomplished something. We did some-
thing small, but in the end its the small
things that count, she said.
Simone also added that the group will be
doing more projects like this in the near fu-
ture as they love reaching out to the com-
munity.
The children are overwhelmed. You can
see in their faces that they are extremely
happy, Swhazger assistant teacher, Char-
na Pietersen, said.

The last local subcouncilmeeting ended on
a positive note last month.
An atmosphere of good co-operation and
working relationships were present as
ward councillors thanked the subcouncil
management for their assistance andwork
within their respective wards.
Steven Vuba, Subcouncil 21 chairperson
said in his address: Colleagues, we are at
the end of 2012 and my appeal to all of you
would be that we lay a solid foundation for
2013 in terms of continued service deliv-
ery. I would like to remind each and all of
us of the citys five strategic objectives,
which are the five pillars.
Vuba named the five pillars as the Car-
ing City, Safe City, The Inclusive City, The
Well Run City and the Opportunity City.
These pillars guide us in rendering
services to all ofCapeTowns citizens,Vu-
ba said to the house.
He gave feedback on the success stories
of this year.
The long awaited Happy Valley Hous-
ing project in Ward 14 started in June 2012
andwill provisionally be completedwithin
the next two years. Twenty families who
previously lived in shacks in the informal
settlement in Happy Valley recently
moved into their new houses.
Vuba further urged and encouraged
council members and officials to continue
working together to get results.
He said: Dependent people need others
to get what they want, independent people
can get what they want through their own
efforts. Interdependent people combine
their own efforts to achieve their greatest
success and that is why I feel that we as
a team can further enhance the profile of
Subcouncil 21.
Another accolade highlighted by Vuba
was Cape Towns recent award.
Cape Town has achieved yet another
tourismaccolade, being voted the Favourite

16 Days important to us
The members of the organisation at their 16 Days of Activism launch at the Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River on Sunday 25
November.
CARMEN JACOBS
For an organisation working primarily with young
girls aged between 14 and 18 years, the 16 Days of Activ-
ism against Women and Child Abuse is an important
date on their calendar.
A date for which they will not only do their best to
highlight the plight of women and child abuse, but also
to empower women and children through different out-
reaches.
Veronique Ellers-Zoutman, director of Truimage
Youth Development says as part of their awareness
campaigns they went to set up in the Zevenwacht Mall
from where they spread the message.
We, as TruimageYouthDevelopment in partnership
with the City of Cape Town and the SAPS Kuils River
are likewise firmly committed to lead a co-ordinated ef-
fort to sustain this campaign, said Veronique.
She added the campaign included distributing the 16
Days signature white ribbons and orange cupcakes.
Team members of Truimage Youth Development ap-
proached the shop-

their message and
explaining more
about the organisa-
tions mission and
goal in combating
these evils.

with a workshop

their daughters
with the theme, We

Veronique adds:

Dis lekker om
die Aussies te
wen, te wen!
Ons krieketspelers het nou onteenseglik
bewys hulle is die wreld se beste
toetsspan.
twee weg-toetsreekse agtereenvolgens teen
Hul bydraes in die reeksoorwinning was
deurslaggewend om ons bo te hou.
Die speler van die reeks? Die Aussie-be-
U is goed, Here, U
vergewe altyd weer,
U is getrou teen

I read about the two-year-old
who survived after falling four
metres at an escalater at
CapeGate. One big question
arises.
If someone neglects a pet, the
animal protection people see to
it, that this person is brought
to justice.
Now, if a parent is not
taking proper care of a two-ye-
ar-old toddler as part of their
parental responsibility, what
does the child protection unit
have to say about it?
This is a big question and I
would like to have an answer

On Sunday evening 25 Novem-
ber, Kelly-Jane Hart (23) and
Clyde Lewis (25) of Bothasig
spotted a homeless man abus-
ing a puppy on the N1 City
Bridge. When they tried to
rescue the tiny labrador, the
homeless man proceeded to
strangle her in front of them
so forcefully, she began to
vomit. Luckily the brave young
couple managed to extract the
traumatised puppy from him
and took her home.
Only five weeks old, much
too young to be away from her
mother, little Bella continued to
suffer from severe vomiting and
diarrhoea over the next few
days. Kelly-Jane and Clyde took
her to Bothasig vet, and blood
tests revealed that she had a
virus called
Parvo.
After
staying at
the vet
overnight,
it was
discovered
that Bella
had severe
complica-
tions in
addition to
Parvo that required a blood
transfusion. Even after the
transfusion and round-the-clock
care, she only had a 10 %
chance of survival.
Bella is still weak and on a
drip but doing much better.
Kelly-Jane expects the little pup
to be discharged later this
week.
The couple chose not to use
local animal welfare services as
they would have put Bella
down due to the exorbitant
costs of saving her. As stu-
dents, they are now struggling
to cover vet bills in the region
of R10 000.
The couple is looking for any
donations to help cover Bellas
vet fees.

TYGERBURGER | KUILSRIVIER
Woensdag, 5 Desember 2012
With the festive season fast approaching,
northern suburbs residents are requested
to support organisations which take care of
the homeless, instead of givingmoney to in-
dividuals.
Wayne Aldridge, principal inspector for
the Displaced Peoples Unit (DPU) said over
the festive season, a hike is experienced in
the number of people donating money to
homeless people.
Especially tourists are known to give
money to street people, he said.
He advises the management of all hotels,
bed-and-breakfasts as well as guest houses
to pleasemake contactwith the City of Cape
Town to obtain pamphlets about the citys
Cape Town Cares, Give Responsibly cam-
paign.
This campaign is part of this administra-
tions efforts to build a Caring City by re-in-
tegrating homeless people into their com-
munity of origin wherever this is possible
to achieve.
The campaign aims to inform businesses,
tourists and the public about the citys pro-
active and sustainable measures to tackle
homelessness.
Aldridge urged people to be vigilant over
the holiday season, and to inform guests to
do the same.
The vision of the Give Responsibly Cam-
paign is to significantly reduce and to ade-
quatelymanage the number of people living
on streets, with special emphasis on facili-
tating a holistic, developmental, integrated
and realistic approach to working with
street people.
The focus of this approach is to give street
people the necessary developmental assist-
ance, in order to achieve employment, ac-
commodation and reintegration with their
families and the community.
The Give Responsibly Campaign men-
tions the critical role communities play in
the rehabilitation of street people.
Most street adults survive through resi-
dents donations in the form ofmoney, food,
clothing, bedding or recycling material, as
well as odd jobs for money.
This, however, tends to reinforce and en-
trench the tendency towards life on the
street, particularly for adults.
Please report any vagrant issues to
0800 872 201.
Dont just give cash
to street vagrants

Artscape going live with big
20!20multi-function revamp
LOUISA STEYL
The iconic Artscape Theatre Centre is get-
ting a R1,5 billion facelift, turning it into a
multifunctional cultural hub.
Dubbed Artscape Live 20!20, the plan will
see the 41-year old complex become one of
the largest precincts in Africa dedicated to
the performing arts.
The revampwill see the addition of an am-
phitheatre, a concert hall, new rehearsal
spaces, new studio theatre and a perform-
ance academy, amongst other changes.
Artscape chairman Prof Somadoda Fike-
ni, says although the institution still needs
to secure final approvals and funds, they
hope to create a cultural hub.
Our vision for 2020 is to create an epicen-
tre of cultural excellence by using the per-
forming arts industry as a prime catalyst of
economic growth, human development and
social cohesion, he says.
Artscape CEO, Michael Maas, says the
task of the theatre is to bring the arts to the
people.
We cannot end with a performer on the
stage, he says. Wemust start with the chil-
dren in the communities and find them and
train them.
The proposed academy will offer training
for 300 students, while the Zip Zap Circus
School will have its own rigging studio.
Maas says the expansion will provide op-
portunities for young talented people in the
community.
Thanks to the CTICC, the BRT station and
new developments at Culemborg, Maas
points out that the theatre is no longer posi-
tioned on the outskirts of the CBD, but is
instead in a prime position to be used as a
multifunctional hub.
The proposed development plans also in-
clude four double-height seminar rooms.
The concert hall, only the second of its
kind in Cape Town, will be acoustically
treated, making it an ideal venue for choirs,
orchestras and even jazz performers.
New studio theatres will allow the theatre
to be more flexible. Not all stories are
meant for the operahouse stage,Maas says.
The piazza in front of the theatre will be
covered and sheltered from the wind, to cre-
ate an amphitheatre, while the theatre will
also sport a bigger parking area after the re-
vamp.
Maas points out that the entertainment in-
dustryhas becomeone of the fastest growing
sectors in the modern world.
To keep pacewith future growth and bur-
geoning demand,Artscape has seized the op-
portunity to expand its capabilities and ca-
pacity, Maas says.

Discover the unusual combination of
Fleur du Cap wines and artisanal salts
from around the world at weekly wine
tastings at Die Bergkelder where hand-
made salted morsels meld with superb
hands-off, naturally crafted wines every
Wednesday.
Fleur du Caps close affinity with na-
ture, especially the exceptional unfiltered
range, inspired salt aficionado chef Craig
Cormack to create savoury treats to pair
with these wines.
The unique flavours of naturally occur-
ring, ancient salts like black lava salt
from Hawaii, volcanic salt from Pakistan
and Persian blue salt, are a natural fit for
Fleur du Cap wines crafted in a style de-
termined by the grapes themselves.
One of the challenges when pairing
salt andwine is to create food that will en-
hance the wine without dominating it.
The natural process of making Fleur
duCapunfilteredwinesworks particular-
ly well with unrefined, artisanal salts, re-
verting back to nature in both the food
and the wine, says Craig.
The tastings start at 12:00 every
Wednesday and cost R100 per person.
Places are very limited so booking is es-
sential. Call Karine Retief on 021 809 8052.
WIN! WIN! WIN!
V Two lucky couples can each win a Fleur du Cap
and salt pairing. To win, SMS the word salt with
your details to 45527 before 12 December 2012.

JANA BEKKER
204 verskillende gehekelde blokkies voltooi
Party dae moes ek egter so baie uittrek dat
Ek kom by
letjies of bolletjies wol vasgewerk. Die de-
ken is groot genoeg vir n koninggrootte-
dubbelbed.
Tannie Comine het twee jaar gelede die
eerste lappieskombers gehekel, op versoek
van een van haar kleinkinders, ook Comine
(Howe, 21).
saam, haar energie is aansteeklik.
(Voos n 9120 stukke,TygerBurger,
13 Julie 2005)
Hekel en legkaartbou is vir my terapie
