In the Sights of IS In May 2017, militants affiliated with the terror organization Islamic State (IS) brought the city of Marawi, on the Philippine island of Mindanao, under their control. The Philip-pine military needed five months to liberate the city. In view of the total destruction of Marawi, the Philippine government appeared incapable of defending its own territory. While the IS henchmen may have suffered a military defeat, the grueling urban warfare against a well-armed army, supported by the US, was a propaganda coup for the Cali-phate. The fact that the Islamists’ black flag flew over Marawi for 154 days could boost radical forces in the entire region. The Philippines – In the Sights of IS is a documentary from a country that the “Islamic State” evidently wants to use as a bridgehead for the spread of its ideology in eastern Asia.

Design Trend Maximalism In 2019, when it comes to interior design: more is more! Opulence, bright colors and shrill designs are typical of the new interior trend Maximalism. This marks a major about-turn, following decades when sleek elegance and restrained Scandinavian tastes set the tone in style-conscious European homes. The new trend emanates from England. This isn’t surprising considering the nation’s traditional love of luxurious and intricate interiors. British magazines and style blogs are currently embracing a bold mix of styles, mismatched furniture ensembles and the sheer joy of an overwhelming interior. Euromaxx explores this new enthusiasm for excess and in-your-face design.

Insect Apocalypse Three quarters of the global insect population has disappeared over the last 30 years – with many species dying out entirely. Some scientists describe it as one of the biggest extinctions af-fecting species and individual creatures on our planet. The sober truth: human beings are to blame. The documentary The Insect Apocalypse illustrates the dramatic consequences that this disaster –which has thus far been misunderstood and underestimated – will have for all Earth’s inhabitants.

Discovering Baden-Baden Take a few hot springs, build an elegant casino and you end up with one of Europe’s glitziest locations: the spa and festival city of Baden-Baden. In the 19th century, this small, sophisticated town on the edge of the Black Forest attracted aristocrats, indus-trialists and artists from all over Europe. While some came to recharge their batteries in the pools, others lost a fortune at the roulette wheel. To this day, the architecture of Baden-Baden epitomizes the spa glamor of the belle époque. And those that come here are still just as international – and wealthy – as before. The high-caliber concert, opera and ballet performances at the “Festspielhaus” or the fascinating art exhibitions at the Frieder Burda Museum are among the top cultural events in Germany. Check-in presenter Lukas Stege immerses himself in the city’s history – as well as its present.

The Vape Conundrum The e-cigarette is proving ever more popular – for young people a mega trend, for long-time smokers an apparently less harmful way of easing the transition from traditional cigarettes. But one thing continues to be essential: the vapor has to be visible! And this is achieved by way of a chemical cocktail of propylene glycol or glycerin. Vapers can still smoke nicotine, but the cartridges – known as e-liquids – come in a vast range of enticing flavors such as gummy bears, butter cake or water melon. While some promote the e-cigarette as a healthy alternative, doctors are already issuing warnings about long-term lung damage. Moreover, studies have shown that vapers soon go back to regular cigarettes and that e-cigarettes may be introducing young people to regular smoking. So just what are the risks of the e-cigarette? In Good Shape explores this question with the help of experts.
