Note to teacher: This packet is comprised of pages from the
digital copy of McDougal & Littell’s “Creating America; A History of the United States” textbook. Page 418 has been modified to remove references to the Temperance movement. Use of this packet assumes your school has and uses this textbook. If not you may wish to create an alternate packet using material from your own textbook or the internet.

Purpose: Students are to pre-read the following pages to gain insight as to the
nature of various reform movements in the 1800’s. This will help students develop the
necessary context in which to better understand the Temperance movements.
Directions: To print the student pre-reading packet select “print” and choose pages
2-6 for printing.
