The Temperance Movement

IT ALL STARTED WHEN… Everyone, even young children would drink A LOT of alcohol without

having any bad feelings about it.

It was mostly women with their children in this movement because they had suffe red the abuse of there drunk husbands/fathers .

Alcohol was a main factor in a lot of the harsh things that would happen in communities.

Alcohol was part of everyday life.

IT WAS AN ADDICTION!!!

THEN… In the 1700’s people began to worry about the amount of alcohol one

person was consuming per day.

Churches began abstinence pledges, meaning they would abstain from consuming alcohol.

Physicians were also starting to become concerned. They began to prescribe less danger alcoholic medications

States began passing prohibition laws, but they were too difficult and expensive to comply with.

Most people did not want to stop drinking and many states changed or even repealed the laws not long after casting them.

So,

The Temperance Movement Began

A petition was presented to Congress that asked for a Constitutional amendment that prohibited all alcoholic beverages.

In 1917, Congress voted for Prohibition. The amendment got the necessary votes in both houses of Congress, and was ratified in only thirteen months.

The movement excelled when the 18th Amendment of the Constitution (Prohibition, 1919-33) was ratified.

To stop people from abusing the usage of alcoholic substances.

It destructively effected a persons well-being along with the things around them.

Christians thought that the abuse of alcohol was a sin. A person who drank did not have faith in God or did not follow the teachings of Jesus Christ .

Reactions

Not everyone was pleased with the ratification of the Prohibition, many were very upset.

People relied on alcohol to help them block out problems they had in there life like marriage issues, unemployment, physical violence in and outside the family etc.

It was a way to relieve stress for many people.

Rebels“Speakeasy” was an illegal way that many people

got alcohol during the time of all this going on throughout the nation.

Bartenders would always tell costumers looking for alcohol to “speak easy” so that they didn’t get caught by any government official.

Many people got caught that were a part of the speakeasy business but that did make others stop. Sometimes they would even bribe police officers to not tell on them.

By the 1920s, there were more speakeasies and alcoholics than before the Prohibition.

Alcohol is still blamed for things.

Just like in the 1700 and 1800s, today there are groups who want to reduced the amount of alcohol consumption such as The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention(CSAP).

With the ratification of the 21st Amendment, the 18th Amendment was repealed in December, 1933.

The Temperance Movement led to the Progressivism era which was an effort to help cure the ills of society.

Although it didn’t achieve much, The Temperance Movement can be considered successful.
