Semester Exam Exemption Policy Students at Tolar High School (grades 9-12) will be able to receive exemptions from some of their semester and final exams based on class averages and school attend-ance. All students will be required to take at least 2 exams each testing period in core sub-ject areas (English, Math, Science, History and Advanced Spanish). Students cannot be exempt from the same core exams both semesters. Exemption Criteria 1. Class average of 90 or above with 3 or less absences.

2. Class average of 85 or above with 2 or less absences.

3. Class average of 80 or above with 1 or less absences.

4. All students with an average 79 or below will be required to take exams.

* All absences count against exemption with the exception of medical, school sponsored, or board approved extracurricular. **Medical is an absent of a student who attends part of the school day with a Doctor/Medical note for that day. ***Students suspended from school or placed in DAEP will be required to take all finals. ****2nd Semester Exemptions for seniors will be determined by the Principal and the Attendance Committee *****3 tardies = 1 absence toward exemption.

Math Algebra/Pre-Cal/Calculus

Mrs. Ecton: aecton@tolarisd.org Algebra 1: Students will go over the re-

view in class Monday and test over Unit

7 on Tuesday. We will begin unit 8 over

systems of equations. Binders are due

on Tuesday (major grade).

Precalculus: Students will continue their

study of rational functions and graphing

same. A quiz is schedule for Friday and

binders are due on Friday.

APCalculus: Students will go over the re-

view for trig identities and take the test

on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will

begin our study of implicit differentiation

and take a quiz on Friday.

Advanced Precalculus: Students will con-

tinue their study of rational functions

and graphing same. A quiz is schedule

for Friday and binders are due on Friday.

Algebra II and Geometry Mrs. Teal: ateal@tolarisd.org Notebooks grades will be taken this

week. Please encourage your student to

have everything in order: Notes, Home-

work, Quizzes, Reviews. This is for a test

grade and can really bring an average up!

In Geometry, we will be finishing up dis-

covering characteristics of quadrilat-

erals. We have established criteria for

setting up problems to solve using part =

part or part + part = whole equations. Ad-

vanced Geometry will test over Quadri-

laterals and begin utilizing the Pythago-

rean Theorem to find lengths of right tri-

angles, which is useful in building and

trades.

Algebra 2 students are rediscovering fac-

toring and using them to find where pa-

rabolas cross the x-axis (when the re-

sults of data are at zero). A QUIZ will be

given this week for a test grade. We will

then begin reviewing how to simplify rad-

icals to prepare for solving quadratic

equations with exact answers, not

rounded.

Math, engineering & science Courses

Science Biology/Adv. Chemistry/A&P

Ms. Nowell dnowell@tolarisd.org Biology will be discussing meiosis and muta-

tions. They will have a test Thursday over

transcription, translation, replication and

meiosis.

Chemistry will be practicing the 3-D arrange-

ment of covalent molecules. They will learn

the VSEPR theory of atomic arrangement.

Human Anatomy will continue with cat mus-

cle dissection. They will study the muscles

of the upper and lower appendages and will

have a test Friday over these muscles.

Principles of Technology/Engineering Design

Concepts of Engineering)

Students will work on more complex CAD

exercises building parts of a toy train.

Advanced Engineering Design and Presenta-

tion II

Students will discuss and takes notes over

online CAD curriculum preparing for Inventor

certification exam.

Principles of Technology Students will prac-

tice soldering, and building circuits with

breadboards. Then they will work problems

with electrical power and test Friday.

Engineering Design and Problem Solving Stu-

dents will work on first large robotics pro-

ject: Design, Document, and Present their

findings.

Chemistry/IPC

Mr. Dingler: bdingler@tolarisd.org Chem - Chemistry will take a test on Tues-

day covering Nomenclature and Chemical

Bond Types. After the test, Chemistry will

begin working on projects.

IPC - IPC will take a test on Tuesday cover-

ing Acids and Bases as well as Solubility.

After the test is over, IPC will begin working

on projects.

English Language Arts Courses

English ELA I

Mrs. Lever: clever@tolarisd.org In Advanced English I, we're currently reading Fahrenheit 451.

In English I, we're continuing our study of the Holocaust and are reading Night. In addi-

tion to working on vocabulary and sentence variety, all students have an expository es-

say due on Wednesday that will be taken for a major grade

English ELA II & III

Mrs. Boisjolie hboisjolie@tolarisd.org 10th on level: We will continue to study Fahrenheit 451. Students will complete reading

assessments and practice STAAR formatted grammar/revising/editing questions.

10th advanced: We will continue our study of 1984. Students will also practice STAAR

formatted grammar questions.

11th English: Students will read poetry by Walt Whitman, including "O, Captain, My Cap-

tain!" We will then watch the film Dead Poets Society, and write an analysis of the

themes regarding life, individualism, and leadership.

ELA IV

DC English III & IV Ms. Anderson manderson@tolarisd.org English III DC - Students will present their Public Service Announcements, along with ex-

plaining their proposals, on Tuesday - Thursday. These will be the last grades for Weath-

erford College.

English IV - Students will finish "Macbeth" this week and begin working on a brief literary

analysis, explaining how either the words "blood" or "sleep" were used symbolically

throughout the play.

English IV DC - Students will turn in their research papers on Tuesday. Their WC final will

be Wednesday and Thursday.

Freshman Reading - Students will continue their Christmas stories.

Spanish II

This week we will be reviewing comparisons using

tan / tanto with a quiz on Tuesday. We will also learn

how to use the verbs saber / conocer and how to use

time expressions in a conversation. Conversation

will be the primary focus.

Spanish I

This week we will be reviewing plural nouns and the

definite and indefinite article. We will take a quiz on

Tuesday and start a writing exercise that will require

reading, writing and translating.

Family and Consumer Science

10 of the students began work on

the MAJOR project that is Due by

December 17.

Fashion Students are now putting

the quilting stitches to their quilts.

Culinary Arts Students will be mak-

ing Pies this next week to take home

to their families.

The Freshman Students will make

the dough for their gingerbread hous-

es this next week. Hopefully they

will also begin to bake the pieces.

Remember to bring candy for decora-

tions. These should be finished for

the show on December 17, 2015.
