Why we have Anzac Day

• We have Anzac Day to remember the soldiers who have died at Gallipoli during World War 1.

• 1915 25th April the Anzacs arrived at the wrong beach, on that day lots of soldiers died so now every year we have Anzac Day to remember the dead and injured soldiers who have saved our country.

Poppies

•Poppies were made after WW1.

•People in Russia sold poppies to wear. They decided to have Anzac Day every year.

In Flanders Fields

• In Flanders Fields the poppies blow• Between the crosses row on row• That mark our place; and in the sky• The larks still bravely singing, fly • Scarce heard amidst the guns below.

• We are the Dead short days ago • We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,• Loved and were loved and now we lie• In Flanders Fields.

• Take up our quarrel with the foe;• To you from failing hands we throw• The torch; be yours to hold it high• If ye break faith with us who die• We shall not sleep; though the poppies grow• In Flanders Fields.

Lest We Forget

• They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old,

• Age shall not weary them nor years condemn;

• At the going down of the sun and in the morning

• We will remember them.

Simpson and his Donkey

• Simpson’s real name is John • Simpson Kirkpatrick. Simpson • was one of the first ANZACs to • land on Gallipoli. When Simpson • found a stray donkey he realized • a donkey would come in handy. • On 19th May 1915, Simpson was • struck by a machine gun and • died.

Evacuation

• The fighting went for eight months at • Gallipoli. Finally, the generals • realized that they were going to • lose the battle so they decided to • sneak all their soldiers away. To • help hide what they were doing, the • Australians played a game of cricket • to distract the Turks and pretend • that everything was going on as • normal.
