THOUGHTS OF THE PASTOR
STAY SAFE
As we wind up the summer activities and get ready for school I want to remind everyone to
stay safe! Here are a few thoughts on staying safe. Please sit down before you read them so
that you don’t fall down and hurt yourself.
1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal acci-
dents
2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.
3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14% of all accidents occur to pedes-
trians.
4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all accidents involve these
forms of transportation.
5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in Hospitals. Above all else, avoid
hospitals.
6. You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services
in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders.
Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at
church! Bible study is safe too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less.
FOR SAFETY'S SAKE - Attend church and read your Bible!
All kidding aside. Going to church and reading the Bible will not prevent accidents, but
it will improve your spiritual wellbeing, and help your outlook on life when those accidents
do happen. I look forward to seeing each of you in church or a Bible study as they get started
up in the fall.

Sermon Series for August: Joseph
Joseph is a major character in the early history of Israel. His story covers the last quarter of
the book of Genesis and he plays a key role in setting up Israel for the Exodus. Joseph’s story
is a riches to rags to riches story full of emotion and meaning. God works in him to transform
him, and through him to change the world. In August we will dedicate the sermons to explor-
ing the life and times of Joseph who is often called the Prince of Dreams.
Pastor Alex will be on vacation Friday, August 11 to Thurs-
day, August 17. If you have need for a pastor during this
time please contact the church office.
PASTOR ALEX ON VACATION
A NEW PARTNERSHIP
While most of the world celebrates the start of a new year in January and the Church cele-
brates the start of a new year with Advent, the reality is, for many of us August is really the begin-
ning of the year. School starts soon bringing with it a plethora of activities and responsibilities. For
Aldersgate, this August will bring a couple of new beginnings. We will start our second year partner-
ing with Refuge Sports as a host site for ESL programs for refugee families in our neighborhood. We
look forward to another wonderful year with these amazing families. We are also excited to begin a
new partnership with Mosaic After School ministry, a wonderful ESL program that works with
many of our neighborhood children who have English as a second language.
In the spring, we were approached about becoming a second host site for Mosaic as they have
outgrown their current facilities. (You can read more about Mosaic’s story in this newsletter). As a
staff, we had a long discussion about what this partnership would mean for us and how this could
work. We felt this was too important an opportunity to pass over. After time of prayer and discern-
ment, several staff members met with the team from Mosaic to figure out who this relationship could
be. Judy Anderson, our current Program Council chair, also joined this meeting. Again, the Spirit
moved us forward! Next, the folks from Mosaic met with Program Council so representatives of all
ministry areas had a chance to ask questions and consider possibilities. After a long discussion, the
Program Council unanimously agreed to present this partnership to Church Council for considera-
tion. At the May Church Council meeting, council members heard Mosaic’s story and again had the
opportunity to ask questions as we continued to discern what this partnership could mean for us. And
again, the Holy Spirit moved. Church Council unanimously voted to move forward. During May, we
worked with our insurance company and a lawyer to work out a lease agreement that could help us
join forces with this after school ministry. In June, after considering the lease and the information
before us, Church Council again voted unanimously to enter into partnership with Mosaic. The
Board of Trustees then finalized details of the lease.
We have been working diligently to plan and coordinate our spaces and times between Al-
dersgate, our Child Development Center, Refuge Sports, Scouts, and now Mosaic. These are exciting
times! We feel so strongly God’s hand in all of this – this partnership is part of what it will look like
for Aldersgate to love our neighbors. We ask for your prayers for all families who have the joys and
stresses of new beginnings this August and we ask for your patience as we work out the day-to-day
details of this new relationship with Mosaic. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
In His love,
Pastor Alex and Staff

A NEW PARTNERSHIP—pg.2
Aldersgate Congregation,
Hello! My name is Laura Estep. I am the Director of Mosaic After School, a program that has
been blessed with the usage of your church and facilities for this upcoming school year. We are de-
lighted to enter into this new season of growth at Aldersgate, and we truly believe it is where we are
meant to be. Each congregational member we have met thus far has been encouraging and open to
our ministry, and has reflected the love and positivity we believe we have found in Aldersgate. This
church already feels special, and our time has only just begun.
Mosaic After School primarily targets students whose second language is English and who,
without Mosaic, would be unable to send their children to a similar program or to tutoring. Our goals
are to improve their academic scores and provide them with the individualized assistance they need
to advance to the next grade level, focus on opportunities for parents to interact with one another and
create a social community outside of their homes, and encourage the children to find empowerment
through artistic expression.
Our students typically come to us during elementary school so we can begin and maintain a
constant role in their lives. This allows us to instill in the children a foundation of the English lan-
guage which will give them a higher probability of academic and social success. Once in Middle
School, we focus our classes on self-growth, confidence and team building. These children attend
monthly Field Trips to connect them with the Greenville Community. I am most excited to see this
group of children walk into the Soul Café for the first time. I know the tall tables will have them feel-
ing like they are at Starbucks! Currently, our Middle School students have been confined to small
chairs and tables, and we know that a unique, mature environment is just what they need!
After completing Middle School with us, our students are given the opportunity to be Ninth
Grade Interns. This allows them the opportunity to receive leadership roles, volunteer in the class-
rooms, and to organize and lead whole group activities. After completion of this Intern Year, if we
feel they have the qualities we are looking for, we invite them to join our staff as a paid teacher.
These students are very precious, as they have a unique viewpoint – they know exactly what are
younger students are going through, as they were once in their shoes. Following High School, our
goal is to see each student on to college and/or an alternate successful path.
Our children will fill the spaces of Aldersgate on August 22nd when school starts. Many of
them already know Aldersgate as the “Big Church” near their school, but also as the place they have
attended Messy Church and your Fall Festival. This is a huge benefit as the majority of their parents
speak little or no English, which makes navigating the community difficult, and a bit scary. Already
we are seeing the familiarity of Aldersgate, and its presence in the community, helping to ease our
transition.
As we get settled into Aldersgate, we hope to connect more with each of you. We are fairly
self-sufficient due to our incredible staff, parents, and current volunteers, but we love visitors and are
excited to partner with the congregational members of Aldersgate. Our children love and welcome
volunteers, and we have seen an increase in their social skills at school as they interact with a variety
of different people.
Thank you so much for this opportunity to connect with such a beautiful place.

SUNDAY SCHOOL-AUGUST 6
On Sunday, August 6, Pastor Alex, Luke Browder,
and Ryland Brown will be teaching a lesson on
Church Music in Parker Hall during the Sunday
school hour beginning at 9:45 am. The lesson
promises to be informative and fun, with audience
participation being one of the highlights. The pi-
ano has been tuned and the Haddon Friendship
class is inviting all the adult classes to join them in
celebrating our gift of music. Free coffee and
doughnut holes provided!
SEEING BETTER
TOGETHER
The Low Vision Support Group has
changed its name to "Seeing Better To-
gether." This is a support group of peo-
ple with impaired vision and their signif-
icant others or care givers to meet, share
information, and discuss issues, guided
by scripture and prayer. We usually meet
on the first Wednesday of the month at
4:30 in the afternoon, in the church li-
brary. Wednesday afternoon meetings
provide the opportunity to make reserva-
tions for the Wednesday evening Con-
nect Dinner, which can be made by con-
tacting the church office on or before
that Monday.
Our September meeting will be held on
August 31 to facilitate some travel plans.
Since we haven't met over the summer,
this first meeting will focus on our tran-
sitions and challenges over the summer.
Our focus will be “Finding Peace in a
Chaotic World.”
LOVE THY NEIGHBOR
The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) which is part of United Ministries re-
cently shared that their administrative offices and family day center will relo-
cate to the basement of the Adult Learning center downtown. This is the final
step of the merger of this program with United Ministries. This will allow
guests of the IHN program greater access to all of the United Ministries ser-
vices. And, the IHN guests are also going to receive more intensive financial
coaching to focus more on increasing financial stability for these families.
Aldersgate will be helping John Knox Presbyterian church host the week of August 13th. We
need volunteers that Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. If you are interested contact Mike
Strickland mike.strickland@charter.net or Michele Schultz schultzrmra@gmail.com.

HISTORIAN NEWS & HELP NEEDED
Anyone remember the ‘great fire’ at AUMC? What was the first name of AUMC? Who was the
first pastor? Were you part of the visioning process? How did that come about?
Ours is a young church, having been established in 1960. Yet, our history is rich and needs to In-
formation about our past need to be kept for future generations. Most of our records are kept in
the fire resistant Archives room outside the library.
If you are on one of the major programs of AUMC, especially if you are chair, such as Church
Council, UMM, UMW, Trustees, Finance, Youth Ministry, and the like, we need you to keep rec-
ords and provide us with yearly reports. These reports and documentation for many years are kept
in the fire resistant Archives room. However, some years and some data is missing. Chairs, pre-
sent and past few years, are requested to review your information in the Archives room and make
sure they are up to date. It is the responsibility of such groups to ensure best efforts are made to
keep these records up to date.
If you have information that you think needs to be in the archives, please put it in the Historian
cubby-hole mail boxes just outside the church office. Photos are welcome but please put vital in-
formation – who, when, where, why and the like on the photos. Not all can be used as there may
be many duplicates – in such cases, we will save the most relevant.
How can you help? We need folks to help us update the history of the church. Especially, I am in
need of folks involved in the process to help tell us how the current vision was developed. Many
people, many groups worked on this, and it is an important point in the life of our church. Want to
serve on the history committee? Let me know. We can use your help.
In Christ,
Bill Smith 2 Church Historian

LIBRARY FACELIFT
If you happen by the library during these next few
weeks, it’s getting a facelift! Thanks to the efforts of
Melissa Stevenson, Jennine Blair, Michelle Shultz,
Pam and Dean Martin, the room has been painted;
books are being reviewed, bar coded and rearranged
to make them easier to get to. As the process contin-
ues, they will add newsletter articles about items of
interest in the library in the hopes of encouraging
more or our members and friends to use it.

RESOURCE DAY FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL & SMALL GROUPS
On August 6, I will be setting out curriculum resources that may be helpful for your Sunday
School classes or small groups. This would be a great time to see what resources we have on
hand and look through new resources as you plan for the fall. I’ll have the books set up in the
Commons from 8:30 am through the end of the 11:00 service. I’ll be on-hand to answer any
questions.
If your class or group has any materials in your classrooms, please re-
turn these to me before August 6. If you have books you’d like to rec-
ommend, let me know! It’s always nice to hear what books/resources
have been particularly meaningful!

is the new kid on the block serving the needs of adults with special needs. Aldersgate Special
Needs Ministry celebrates its 14th anniversary this year! Currently there are three homes in
operation in Orangeburg, Columbia, an Florence.
Please keep this important ministry in your prayers.
On August 13 we will receive a special offering for
Aldersgate Special Needs Ministry. Please plan to
give a little extra to support this valuable ministry.

PRIME TIMERS
Our August Prime Timer Event is coming up on Monday, August 7th and we would love for
you to join us! Our guest this month is The Sweet Potato Pie Kids performing group. These
youngsters are part of a program designed to save and
promote Appalachian music by recruiting and teach-
ing young musicians.
The program begins at 11 am and lunch is served
around noon. The deadline for reservations is Wednes-
day, August 2. Since we are having the combined
summer Sunday school sessions, a sign up sheet will
be on the tables in Parker Hall, or you can use the res-
ervation cards in the sanctuary pews. If you are on the
reservation call list you should be getting a call on
this. You can also call, email or text Ruth Hughes at 380-8706 or rhughes@aumcsc.org to
save you a seat. Please remember that if you make a reservation, we ask that you please hon-
or the payment for your meal, even if you have to cancel. We can certainly put it in a to go
box for you to pick up later that day. The cost is still only $7.00. If you would prefer to just
come to the program, just let the hostess know as you come in the door. Thanks! Ruth Hughes

ATTAWAY FAMILY IN THAILAND
Greenlight students have arrived and departed. Where did the month go? We had a
great time hosting the three Greenlight Gateway students and their leader. This was the sec-
ond year of Greenlight program where students ages 18-24 who are wanting to explore a call
to missions spend a month in another country with those serving cross culturally to experi-
ence what life is like and how the Lord is moving in the world. They were able to experience
many things about Thai people, language, food, religion, environment and entertain-
ment. They had one on one time with Thai nationals as well as expats who live and work at
various places in Thailand. They came with open minds and open hearts, so the Lord was
able to grow them in his grace and their understanding of bringing the hope and love of Christ
to all nations. We will continue to pray for them and support them as their life journeys con-
tinue.
One of the components of the trip was to join a Christian Day Care operation where we
spent the morning working with the kids who come each day. These are children whose fami-
lies live in the adjacent slum. The aim of the program is to get these students ready for first
grade. Many of them have disabilities and are in great poverty, but we left feeling joyful and
appreciative of the chance to be with them. We also were able to walk through the slum and
pray with elderly Thai people whom the director of the program has relationships with. It was
a challenging experience; the smells, trash and poor sanitation conditions were overwhelming
at times, but again the light of Jesus was present as the Buddhist residents allowed us in their
homes and accepted our prayers.
We are so grateful to so many of you for your prayers and support to us. We could not
be serving the Lord in Thailand without you. Thank you for being on this journey with us.
In His love and grace,
The Attaways
Prayer Requests
We would ask for your prayers for the Thai ministry team and for the students that attend the
programs. Pray that the Lord would continue to work on their hearts and that they would be
open to His love and grace.
Please pray for this term where we are continuing Discovery Bible Study in the gospel of
Mark and our Easter celebration in September.
For more laborers to serve here in Roi Et and for ministry sustainability for the Thai workers.
For our family as we are approaching the end of our first term serving in Thailand we ask
for prayers for discernment and wisdom as we follow the Lord's call on our lives.
