l've never been creative, but I do enjoy baking. lt allows me to create something
while following a strict set of instructions, which appeals to my love of
organization. Most recipes I use come with a picture of the completed dessert in
all its delicious glory. However, even if I adhere religiously to the recipe, my
baked creations rarely look lie the pictures. Maybe I didn't whisk the eggs
briskly enough ortwistthe frosting tube just so.
It's frustrating not to know exactly how my dessert will look. However, as long I
put the right ingredients in, it usually tastes great. Desseft is dessert-sugar
always triumphs in the end!
The readings we're given at the end of the liturgical year are focused on another
kind of end-the end of the world. The varying descriptions of the"end time"
usually include cosmic battles between good and evil that can leave us felling
confused, Uncertain, and even frightened. As with baking, we can't know
exactly how the events of this end time will play out.
But what we hear consistently from Jesus is that no matter how the events
occur, good witl iriumph over evil. The world is ultimately in God's hands, and
God (and good) willemerge victorious.
Our challenge, then, is to trust God and be prepared to follow the recipe, so to
speak. The key ingredients: recognition of our mortality and a desire to
fervently follow the Lord. Our lives are brief, and we can't delay discipleship.
We need to be centered in God now.
By sticking to the recipe today, we can remain confident that God will welcome
us into his kingdom in the end. J an e I Esker s u n dayb u lleti n s @ Ii g u o ri. o rg

Our sacrificial banquet of remembrance is called 'eucharist' or thanksgiving."But true thanksgiving is not just a matter of words and warm sentiments.Gratitude for a gtft means offering a gift in return. .. The Mass is a celebration ofhis love and the freedom it won for us through his sacrifice. Through it, the love
of God is poured into our hearts and enables us to love with his love. ln the powerof that love, we offer ourselves back to him and enter into that sacrifice which we
celebrate. True thanksgiving means self-giving. This is the meaning "fEucharist." - D r. M arcelli no D' Amb rosi o

nl1 The Bible is used to mandate or jurtfy euerythingfrom the food\c& we eat to the people we kill. But much of the Bible was written in
an era when tribal chiefs who had to explain wLty people got skkwhen they ate uncooked clams or pork either made up a story or
inuoked the hnnd of a higfur power. How ca a text based on the
ualues and ignorance of a primordial nomadic socieQ serve as
guide to how we should liue today? Jo,

A DearJoe,
It is amazing, isn't it, to think that a book written fornomadic tribes thousands of years ago still conveys a
message that has value for us today. But it does.
Taken atface value, the clam/pork example you give-andmany others like it-would cause anyone to doubt his orher faith. But the Catholic Church isn't a fundamentalistfaith. 'V/e believe the Bible is the 'Word of God given forour instruction. While we don't look to the Bible forscientific facts, we do look to it for a much deeper truth.'When you reflect on the Bible, you see a God who loves us
dearly. Take this passage from L John: "Beloved, we are
God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been
revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be
like him, for we shall se him as he is" (3:2). I don't knowabout you, Jo., but that passage alone glves megoosebumps.
So continue your search, and continue to question and
deepen your fait-but don't lose the forest for the trees.
