Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am hoping that you are slowly getting used to this cold weather. First, I would like you to ask you please keep in your prayers our brothers and sisters in Christ, especially those that have been affected by violence in our streets; the ones killed in the Pittsburgh synagogue; those that were wounded because of these acts of

violence; and those who have lost loved members of their family, especially young children, in these inhumane acts. When you hear that an innocent child or youth is gunned down, your heart is broken and left wondering what is going on. Personally, I feel that the issue of gun violence and domestic terrorism will be with us unless everyone can come together and find a common solution without playing politics and can tone down our empty rhetoric. I know how diffi-cult it is for people to come together and agree to do something, especially ending violence in our cities. However, I think that one of the root causes of domestic terrorism, gangs, and violent killing revolves around the question of poverty; hatred speeches in public forums that has roots in lack of proper education exposure; unnecessary biases; lack of decent employment opportunities; parenting; schools that are poorly staffed and underfunded; lack of role models; and government policies among other issues. It is vicious cycle! There is too much finger-pointing these days as we scramble almost daily looking for answers. The Catholic social teachings encourage its followers to participate in the democratic process of the country in which they live and belong that is consistent with the Gospel message. And the Gospel message is about treating others the way you will expect to be treated. This means that as Catholics, we should join a political party, call our senators or representatives, join a community group, vote in the elections, or write a newspaper article and voice the concerns that affect society. That is how we can elect leaders who can champion issues that affect all of us and hold them accountable if they fail to keep their promises to us. We cannot afford to just sit down and pray, hoping that the problems that affect our cities will melt like ice-cream in a cone. We must be actively engaged our democratic processes. Parents should teach their children as they grow older the importance of involving themselves in the community and participating in the electoral process once they attain the voting age. This is one of the ways we can bring the issues that affect our streets to the forefront. I urge you to be active in the community in which you live. Please do so with humility and love, and let the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Traditions of our Catholic Church guide you in the process of airing these grievances. I would like to thank all our volunteers that worked at the All Hallows Bake sale this past Saturday and Sunday, and those who helped in the preparation and cleaning of Maguire Hall. Lastly, our first reading today shows us that God is always faithful even during those times that we tend to move away from Him. We need to keep the commandments that He has given us. May God continue to bless you always.

— Fr. George

1st & 2nd Readings for the Upcoming Sun-day are offered. Their sole purpose is to help us all of us “receive” and “hear” the word of God.

NOVEMBER 11, 2018 — 32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: 1 Kings 17:10-16

The prophet Elijah lived about 800 years before Christ. After predicting a drought which did, in fact, take place, he fled to a place where God provided for his needs. Later, God directed him to the city of Zarephath, which was across the northern border of Israel in the pagan territory of Phoenicia. The drought had led to a famine and we see its effects in today’s passage.

Second Reading: Hebrews 9:24-28

On Yom Kippur the Day of Atonement, the high priest sacrificed a goat on the altar in the temple. Then he took some of the blood into the holiest place in the temple sanctuary where only he was allowed to go. There, he sprinkled that blood as a renewal of the blood covenant made at Mount Sinai, and prayed that God would forgive all the sins the people had committed during the previous year. This ritual is the backdrop for today’s reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.

Music Dept. News

We will soon have a new fund-raising initiative in which you will get something you really want! You can keep it or give it as a gift. Just in time for Christmas we will be offering items with the St Catherine-St. Lucy logo on them. At any church event, you can still see people wearing their old ones. The products range from t-shirts to caps. There will be 23 items to choose from. Any item you buy will benefit the Music Department. It will help to pay for things such as salaries, sheet music for the choirs, professional instrumentalists and upkeep of the instruments. The more you buy, the more we make!

Dine Out with Friends

Tues. 12-4-18 - 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.: Panera Bread, 7349 Lake St., River Forest

Save the Date: Sunday, November 18

The community of Congregation is hosting an annual Multi-faith thanksgiving service at our parish on November 18th at 7:00 pm. The Community of Congregations is an interfaith organization serving the greater Oak Park - River Forest, Illinois area. The community of congregations supports PADS [Public Action to Deliver Shelter], the Cluster Tutoring Program, the annual Crop Walk, the Walk-in-Ministry, the Oak Park/River Forest Food pantry, and the Holiday Food and Gift Basket program [HFGB], under a grant provided by Youth Services of Oak Park and River Forest Townships.

In addition to these ministries, this faith community sponsors a variety of programs including the community's annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, one of the oldest such programs in the Chicagoland area.

This year, our parish is hosting the prayer service and we expect more than 350 people in attendance. We are in need of volunteers to help with post-service treats (brownies, cookies, fruits, coffee etc.) at Maguire Hall and help to greet, serve and clean up. All are invited to attend this important event. Please contact Fr. George or Pat Koko on how you will like to help.

Black Catholic History Month

November was chosen because of two famous black saints, Saint Augustine of Hippo whose birthday is November 3rd and St. Martin de Porres whose feast day is November 13th. We will celebrate with art and environment, projects by the children and music. So keep this crucial part of our culture in your minds, hearts and prayers during this month.
