Not all that long ago I went to a business school

I knew that after college what I really wanted was…

Piles of cash

Fancy stuff

And…

Fame

To be fair I had probably just watched too much of:

In any case… I was going to be a “hot shot”

But…

When I actually went to the classes, I ended up disliking most of them

In fact it was dawning on me that my desire for the

Piles of cash

Fancy stuff

And…

The

Fame Fame

Was a little misguided…

I started to realise I actually had NO IDEA what I wanted to do after college

The one thing I really did enjoy

Was making presentations

And… I was good at them

And… I was good at them

I ate, slept and drank all things presentation

Books by the like of

Inspired me

And books on data viz by

Stephen Kossyln and Edward Tufte

Changed the way I looked at presenting information

But…

I knew that I couldn’t make a living out of presentations alone

I wasn’t made for self-employment

That was for crazy “Entrepreneurs”

A rare breed of person we were often told of…

People like: Jobs

People like: Branson

People like: Zuckerberg

These “Entrepreneurs” did things like

Climb mountains

Take over the world

Retain infinite levels of confidence

And miscellaneous other things I knew I couldn’t do!

So… I continued on, a little puzzled…

Graduation day came And went

Graduation day came And went

And I was no closer to finding out what I wanted to do

Things looked bleak

So, one weekend it dawned on me

With nothing to lose I may as well give it a shot

I had a think about how I could use my skills to make my own Job

I sketched out a few ideas, and started

making plans

And I spent that weekend working like mad to

Make. It. Happen!

By the end of the weekend it was done, the site was up and the business cards were on the way

I set up twitter and started to talk to the world

I will admit, things started out slow

But now, I am happy to say they are up and running and going nicely

I have worked with a great variety of clients

But in the end it is my job to make sure they are

By working with them to design amazing presentations

Now…

When I look back at the aspirations the old me had, I cringe a little…

I have replaced them with better things now…

An appreciation for control over how I spend

my time

A desire for Balance

And instead of fancy stuff, I’m happy with the simple stuff

A better set of goals some might say

And…

The one thing I have learnt is that

I was Wrong

Starting a business is not impossible… and…

If I can do it

So can You

You CAN do it

So… go do it
