Shegraduated in 1949 from NiobraraHigh School; at the age of 16, witha two year Normal TrainingCertificate and taught countryschool for two years. On May 20,1951, LaReta married Theodore(Red) Branstiter at Niobrara,Nebraska. They were blessedwith three children: Stella Lynn,Ray Lee and Beth La Rae. Overthe years Red and LaReta workedfor Ruby and Otto Wirth and theKreycik’s before moving to into(town) Niobrara in 1968. LaRetaworked at Niobrara Rest Home,Sandy Peed’s clothing store,Headstart, the Niobrara Tribune,the Niobrara PlanningCommission, the John ThomasLaw Office, Bection-Dickinson,the Niobrara State Park and theNiobrara Laundry Service. Shewas a member of the FriendlyCirlcle Extension Club, theNiobrara Historical Society, anEMT on the Niobrara AmbulanceSquad, a member of the Red HatSociety, served on the NiobraraCemetery Board for over 40 yearsand was a member of the GoodShepherd Lutheran Church inLindy, Nebraska. LaReta liked tocrochet and embroider and read-ing was a passion. She couldoften be found sitting at thekitchen table reading a book shehad recently checked out at theNiobrara Public Library or doinga word find. She enjoyed attend-ing her grandchildren’s activitiesand was very proud of each ofthem. LaReta was a marvelouscook and pie baking was her spe-cialty and the fruits of her laborwill be greatly missed by many.She knew who liked what flavorsof pie and each “Pie Club mem-ber” was treated to pie at the Fly

Way Café’ on their birthdays.Some of the members liked herpie so much they wouldn’t share,isn’t that right, Larry? Dad alwaysgot the piece with the cherrypits, but occasionally Joe got onetoo. We all fondly remember thesecret recipe dinner rolls thatwere served at various family gettogethers. Red and LaRetaenjoyed camping along theVerdigre Creek with manyfriends, swimming in theNiobrara, even though she wasafraid of the water and didn’tknow how to swim, canoeing withfriends, dancing, playing cards,square dancing and other funtimes with friends and family.LaReta liked taking back roadtrips with son-in-law Jeff at thewheel, never once worryingabout being lost because Jeffalways knew where he wasgoing, as opposed to other fami-ly member who shall remainnameless and lost. LaRetaalways remembered birthdays offamily and friends by sendingcards. Special cards for specialpeople…right Steve? She reallyliked to acknowledge those whohad birthdays on or near thesame as hers or Reds.

LaReta passed away quietlyon Wednesday, June 9, 2010 atAvera Sacred Heart Hospital inYankton, South Dakota, after abattle with lung cancer. She was77 years old.

She is survived by her hus-band of 59 years, Red; children,Stella of Bloomfield, Ray andwife Deb of Neligh, Beth and hus-band Jeff Barger of Bloomfield;grandchildren, Carl Clark and hiswife Roxie, Jason Clark and wifeMary all of Yankton, Rachael,Becca and Brett Branstiter all ofNeligh, and Brandon and LaceyBarger of Bloomfield; greatgrandchildren, Donavon,Damien, Devin, Tasha and Dessaall of Yankton; sisters, PatriciaWeaver, Cleo (Don) Croson, Lois(Dick) Carmona, Ruth Kitto,Paula Blankenfeld; brothers,Peter Blankenfeld and John(Margaret) Blankenfeld; manyaunts and uncles, nieces,nephews and cousins; brother-in-laws, Leonard (Jean)Branstiter of Brenham, TX, Ron(Sylvia) Branstiter of CarsonCity, NV; sister-in-law, DoloresWilson of Scotsdale, AZ; alongwith a host of friends and herfaithful friend, Bear.

She is preceded in death by

her parents, Floyd H. and LaRetaV. (Mansfield) Blankenfeld; abrother, Ronald Jean and a sis-ter, Diane.

We will miss our mother,grandmother, great-grandmothervery much and we are thankfulfor the memories we have of herand with her.

Rose Vilhauer, daughter ofCornelius and Martha (DeLong)Lukkes, was born January 16,1925 on a farm southeast ofAvon, SD. She died Thursday,June 10, 2010 at the YanktonCare Center in Yankton, SD. Roseattained the age of 85 years, four

months and 26 days.Rose attended country

school through the eighth grade. Rose was baptized and con-

firmed in the Zion LutheranChurch in Avon on October 13,1949. She married MarlinVilhauer on October 21, 1949 atZion Lutheran Church in Avon.Five children were blessed totheir union. After their marriage,Marlin and Rose moved onto thefamily farm where they farmedand did dairy for 49 years. Theyretired in 1998, bought a homeand moved into Avon.

Prior to and after her mar-riage, Rose took care of her illmother. She was a hardworkingfarm wife and homemaker and aloving mother.

Rose was a faithful memberof Zion Lutheran Church and theLadies Altar Guild. She also wasa member of American LegionAuxiliary. She will be remem-bered for her enjoyment of play-ing card games and her love ofcrocheting and sewing.

Thankful for having sharedher life are her husband Marlinof Avon; her children: Elaine andhusband Jim Johnson of Dallas,TX; Loren of Pierre; Clayton andwife Jean of Ft. Collins, CO andtheir children Dawn, Jared,Jason and Jeremy; Glen and wifeBrenda of Mitchell and their chil-dren Stacy Haiar and husbandJosh, Brian and wife Megan, andBrent; and Charlene and hus-band Kevin Tjeerdsma of Avonand their son Tyler and wifeJenny; one great grandchild,Zayden Tjeerdsma; brother Jimand wife, Carol of Avon; sister-in-law Leola Lukkes of Tyndall; andmany nieces, nephews andfriends.

Yankton, SD, died Friday, June11, 2010, at his residence inrural Yankton with his son anddaughter by his side.

Funeral services will be 3:00PM on Tuesday, June 15, 2010,at United Church of ChristCongregational in Yankton withReverend Joe Schulte officiating.Burial will be in the YanktonCity Cemetery. Visitation isMonday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM atthe Wintz & Ray Funeral Homein Yankton. Visitation willresume one hour prior to thefuneral on Tuesday at thechurch. Dick Payne was born August5, 1926 to Armour and Pearl(Davis) Payne in Moville, IA.His family moved to Yankton

when he was 11years old, andDick attendedschool there. Hebegan practicingauctioneeringwhen he was 13,and began hisauction careerwhen he was 16.He worked forAnderson Livestock Sales (nowStockmen’s) in Yankton, SturgisLivestock Exchange in Sturgis,SD, Miller Sale Barn in Miller,SD, Bales ContinentalCommission Company in Huron,SD, and conducted countlesspurebred cattle and horse sales.In 1964, he won 4th place in theNational Livestock AuctioneerContest in Richmond, VA. Hewas married to Marina(Schmidt) Payne for 56 years.He joined his father, Armour,and together they operatedPayne & Payne Auctioneers, and

Payne & Payne Livestock OrderBuyers. From 1949 to 1974, Dickoperated Stewart & PayneAuctioneers. After 1974, Dickworked by himself in PayneAuctioneers until his son Jimjoined him, becoming the 3rdgeneration of Payne auction-eers. In 2003, Dick was induct-ed into the South DakotaAuctioneers Hall of Fame.

Dick was a 60 year memberof the Yankton Shrine Club, 60year member of the St. John’sMasonic Lodge No. 1 A.F. &A.M., 60 year member of theYankton Elks Lodge No. 994,South Dakota and NationalAuctioneer Associations, and aproud member of the NationalFjord Registry. He loved drivingteams of horses in parades, andpulling covered wagons.

He is survived by his specialfriend, Norma DeJong of Volin,SD; 2 children, Jim Payne ofYankton and Patty (Allan) Karell

of Billings, MT; 4 grandchildren;1 great grandchild on the way;sister, Dessa Taylor of Yankton;and brother-in-law, CharlesLarson of Yankton.

He was preceded in deathby his parents; daughter, NancyPayne; 2 sisters, Carol Larsonand Naomi Payne; brother,Chester; and brother-in-law, BudTaylor.

Deacon Steffen To Be Honored SundayCROFTON, Neb. — Deacon Andrew Steffen of St. Rose of Lima

parish at Crofton, Neb., will be honored Sunday with a receptioncelebrating his 25 years of service as a deacon in the CatholicChurch.

St. Rose Guild is hosting the reception, including coffee androlls, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass at the St. Rose Parish Hall in Crofton.Everyone is invited.
