LaReta M. Branstiter (October 8, 1932 - June 9, 2010) Funeral services for LaReta Branstiter, 77, of Niobrara will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lindy with graveside services at 2 p.m. at L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Brockhaus Funeral Home in Niobrara. LaReta Marie (Blankenfeld) Branstiter was born October 8, 1932 at Lynch, Nebraska to Floyd H. and LaReta V. (Mansfield) Blankenfeld. She graduated in 1949 from Niobrara High School; at the age of 16, with a two year Normal Training Certificate and taught country school for two years. On May 20, 1951, LaReta married Theodore (Red) Branstiter at Niobrara, Nebraska. They were blessed with three children: Stella Lynn, Ray Lee and Beth La Rae. Over the years Red and LaReta worked for Ruby and Otto Wirth and the Kreycik’s before moving to into (town) Niobrara in 1968. LaReta worked at Niobrara Rest Home, Sandy Peed’s clothing store, Headstart, the Niobrara Tribune, the Niobrara Planning Commission, the John Thomas Law Office, Bection-Dickinson, the Niobrara State Park and the Niobrara Laundry Service. She was a member of the Friendly Cirlcle Extension Club, the Niobrara Historical Society, an EMT on the Niobrara Ambulance Squad, a member of the Red Hat Society, served on the Niobrara Cemetery Board for over 40 years and was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lindy, Nebraska. LaReta liked to crochet and embroider and read- ing was a passion. She could often be found sitting at the kitchen table reading a book she had recently checked out at the Niobrara Public Library or doing a word find. She enjoyed attend- ing her grandchildren’s activities and was very proud of each of them. LaReta was a marvelous cook and pie baking was her spe- cialty and the fruits of her labor will be greatly missed by many. She knew who liked what flavors of pie and each “Pie Club mem- ber” was treated to pie at the Fly Way Café’ on their birthdays. Some of the members liked her pie so much they wouldn’t share, isn’t that right, Larry? Dad always got the piece with the cherry pits, but occasionally Joe got one too. We all fondly remember the secret recipe dinner rolls that were served at various family get togethers. Red and LaReta enjoyed camping along the Verdigre Creek with many friends, swimming in the Niobrara, even though she was afraid of the water and didn’t know how to swim, canoeing with friends, dancing, playing cards, square dancing and other fun times with friends and family. LaReta liked taking back road trips with son-in-law Jeff at the wheel, never once worrying about being lost because Jeff always knew where he was going, as opposed to other fami- ly member who shall remain nameless and lost. LaReta always remembered birthdays of family and friends by sending cards. Special cards for special people…right Steve? She really liked to acknowledge those who had birthdays on or near the same as hers or Reds. LaReta passed away quietly on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota, after a battle with lung cancer. She was 77 years old. She is survived by her hus- band of 59 years, Red; children, Stella of Bloomfield, Ray and wife Deb of Neligh, Beth and hus- band Jeff Barger of Bloomfield; grandchildren, Carl Clark and his wife Roxie, Jason Clark and wife Mary all of Yankton, Rachael, Becca and Brett Branstiter all of Neligh, and Brandon and Lacey Barger of Bloomfield; great grandchildren, Donavon, Damien, Devin, Tasha and Dessa all of Yankton; sisters, Patricia Weaver, Cleo (Don) Croson, Lois (Dick) Carmona, Ruth Kitto, Paula Blankenfeld; brothers, Peter Blankenfeld and John (Margaret) Blankenfeld; many aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; brother- in-laws, Leonard (Jean) Branstiter of Brenham, TX, Ron (Sylvia) Branstiter of Carson City, NV; sister-in-law, Dolores Wilson of Scotsdale, AZ; along with a host of friends and her faithful friend, Bear.
