The NOHA Joint Master’s Degree Programme in

International Humanitarian Action

The NOHA Joint Master's in International Humanitarian Action is an inter-university, multidisciplinary postgraduate programme that provides academic education and professional competencies for personnel working or intending to work in the area of humanitarian action.

Graduates of this Programme are expected to have the capacity to act at all levels of humanitarian relief operations and to function in a variety of ways to enhance the professional delivery of humanitarian assistance and sustainable actions .

The NOHA Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme in International Humanitarian Action was born out of a social need.

The initiative was established in response to a growing need for higher educational qualifications specifically suited to addressing complex humanitarian emergencies

NOHA was founded in 1993/1994 by 5 European Universities to establish a Master‘s Programme in Humanitarian Action

Advised and assisted by DG ECHO and DG EAC

With the backing of NGOs, IGOs, and other actors of the humanitarian action community with whom the Network has strong links

It is given in the following universities:

4. University of Aix-Marseille III Paul Cezanne, France

5. University College Dublin, Ireland

6. University of Groningen, Netherlands

The duration of the programme is sixteen months, three semesters, from early September through to December of the following year (90 ECTS credits).

The programme is structured around four main components

• 1st Semester– A. Intensive Programme (5 ECTS)

• Location: Coordinating University

– B. Core Course (25 ECTS)• Location: Home University

• 2nd Semester– C. Orientation Period (30 ECTS)

• Location: Host University

• 3rd Semester– D. Research and Internship (30)– Location: HU or NOHA PartnerUniversity and/

or Humanitarian Organisation/ Agency

2. Legal and geopolitical approach of humanitarian action at Université d'Aix-Marseille III

3. International institutions in humanitarian emergencies at Ruhr-Universität Bochum

4. Societies in transition at University College Dublin

5. New legal and management challenges in humanitarian action. Special reference to Peace Operations at Universidad de Deusto

6. Conflict disaster and peace building at Uppsala Universitet

7. Comprehensive security: Circumstances of Decline, Disappearance and Reconstruction at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen
