Traditionally,humanitiesscholarscarryingoutresearchonaspecificormultipleliterarywork(s)areinterestedintheanalysisofrelatedtextsortextpassages.Butthedigitalagehasopenedpossibilitiesforthescholarstoenhancetheirtraditionalworkflows.Enabledbydigitizationprojects,humanitiesscholarscannowadaysreachavastamountofdigitizedtextsthroughwebportalssuchasGoogleBooksandInternetArchive…Thisshiftfromreadingasinglebook“onpaper”tothepossibilityofbrowsingmanydigitaltextsisoneoftheoriginsandprincipalpillarsofthedigitalhumanitiesdomain.

Whattransformeddisciplinarycoherencemightliterarystudiesembrace?Hereisasuggestion:literarystudiesteachesliteraciesacrossarangeofmediaforms,includingprintanddigital,andfocusesoninterpretationandanalysisofpatterns,meaning,andcontextthroughclose,hyper-,andmachinereadingpractices.Readinghasalwaysbeenconstitutedthroughcomplexanddiversepractices.Nowitistimetorethinkwhatreadingisandhowitworksintherichmixturesofwordsandimages,soundsandanimations,graphicsandlettersthatconstitutetheenvironmentsoftwenty-first-centuryliteracies.
