White Balance

● White balance is removing the color casts created by different temperatures of light so the people and objects in your photos are the right color

Light temperature

● Different temperatures of light have different colors.

● Measured on the Kelvin scale● Different light sources create different

temperatures based on their components● Different times of day will have different

temperatures

File Formats

● RAW- The raw file; digital negatives● JPG- Joint Experts Photographic Group● TIFF- Tagged Image File Format

● RAW- The raw file; digital negatives● Most flexible, has most information● Requires special software to read and

process● NOT a finished file format● Very large files

● JPG- Joint Experts Photographic Group● Final image format● Can make prints, share on the internet, etc. ● Compressed file● Not good for editing● All images in this slideshow are JPG

File Formats

● TIFF- Tagged Image File Format● Midway between RAW and JPG● Best for Photoshop● Finished file format● NOT compressed, no information lost when editing● Larger files than JPG, smaller than RAW● Files get very large when layered

File Formats

● Which do you use?● RAW is most flexible, but large file sizes and need

for editing program can make it cost prohibitive● JPG is finished, but you can't over edit● TIFF is not available on all cameras

● Recommend shooting in RAW when you can

Editing Programs

● Not required for JPG, but they make your images pop

● Must use for RAW● Think of them like a digital darkroom● Most famous is Photoshop● Also available are Photoshop Elements,

Lightroom● Free programs include GIMP and Picasa

Editing Programs

● Photoshop/PS Elements/Lightroom● All prices RAW images● Photoshop/PSE used for image manipulation● Lightroom is a powerful RAW editor, light on

image manipulation● Expensive- Creative Cloud $20/mo● PSE is stand alone; around $100

Editing Programs

● Picasa● Google Program● Downloadable, easy to use● Will not process RAW files

● GIMP● Also free● Will not process RAW files
