Overview & Purpose • The purpose of this project was to assess the learning and

development needs of businesses in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

• Stage 1: Determine scope and purpose (September 2016)

• Stage 2: Develop survey questions (October 2016)

• Stage 3: Disseminate survey to local small businesses via email (October 2016)

• Stage 4: Data collected and analyzed (November 2016)

What products or services companies currently use to deliver employee training

Conclusions• Majority of respondents had 1-25 employees.

• Most employee training budgets fall into the $1-$500 range.

• The budget for companies with 1-25 employees are also in the $1-$500 range.

• More companies are interested in training than not.

• 92% of businesses employ at least some Millennials.

• Face to face is still the most widely used method of delivering training.

• Almost no businesses prefer a solely online based training program.

• Training is mostly a mixture of informal and formal. Strictly formal training is the least used.

• A blended training plan is the most preferred method by businesses.

• Communication, specialized, company specific, time management, and leadership are the 5 most important skills that need developing.

RECOMMENDATIONS

• Businesses lack the time and number of programs to meet their training needs

• Specific topics that need training are:

• Communication

• Leadership

• Management skills

• Company-specific processes, knowledge
