What are homographs?

Homographs are words that have the same spelling BUT

They have different pronunciations (sound differently) AND

Have different meanings.Let’s look at some examples!

wind

1. To make my clock work correctly, I need to wind it up!

2. The wind blew the dog’s ears as we went down the highway.

tear

1. The little boy shed a tear when he dropped his ice cream.

2. Please tear a page out of your notebook.

lead

1. The flashlight will lead the men through the darkness.

2. The pencil lead will break if you press down too hard.

present

1. The judges will present the award to the winning team.

2. We must live in the present, not the past.

desert

1. The animals in the desert have adaptations to get food and water.

2. The man’s friends deserted him in the theater.

dove

1. The dove sat at the top of the tree.

2. The girl dove to get the ball.

record

1. Please record your notes in the book.

2. The doctor keeps a record of all of your visits.

wound

1. You should clean the wound before putting a bandage on it.

2. We wound the leftover string into a ball.

produce

1. The woman will produce a healthy salad to eat with supper.

2. We buy our produce at the market.
