Can you work

Systematically?

Problem solving

In maths this week we have been trying to solve problems SYSTEMATICALLY.

Being systematic means that you solve a problem in an organised way. You think about how you will set out your work and make sure you have tried ALL of the possibilities. Have a look at how we got on…

• We had 4 counters• We had a cup and a

hoop• You got 10 points if a

counter was in the cup

• You got 5 points if a counter was in the hoop

• You got no points if a counter was outside the hoop

The problem

We had to find out ALL of the different ways you could score point:

So scores:10+10+10+10=40

Get it?

This is how Ahmad and Maliha got on (it got a bit rubbed out on the

carpet!

In the end we tried to work out all the possibilities on the carpetIN A SYSTEMATIC WAY!

10+10+10+10=4010+10+10+5=3510+10+10+0=3010+10+5+0=2510+10+0+0=2010+5+0+0=1510+0+0+0=105+0+0+0=50+0+0+0=05+5+5+5=205+10+5+5=255+10+10+5=305+5+5+0=155+5+0+0=105+5+10+0=20

How did we get on?

• Did we find every possible way to do it?

• Could we have set it out better?

• Could you improve on our work?

• Tell us what you think in a comment

• How many ways could you score with 5 counters instead of 4?
