Master 850 has climbed his way up to seventh place in the WBFSH ranking of dressage sires. He has surpassed well known sires like Ferro, Florestan I and Ehrentusch on the top ten list. j Just like previous years Irco Marco 662 and Irco Mena 763 have the highest BLUP-index for the main index in jumping. In dressage Don Primero 981 once again has the highest index with the exported stallion (USA) Bolero 897 a close second. j Andrew and Aurora Borealis tie for Top Scoring Foal. j The highest scoring horse in the 3-4-Year Test was Beall Spring Savanna with an impressive 50 points. This same mare won her class at Devon and was awarded USDF Reserve Champion 3-Year-Old Materiale Filly. j Tip Top Sterling was the one and only stallion to be approved by the judges. His final scores were 9-8-8-9-8 = 42 and 9-8-9-9 under rider. j Our special eventing awards go to Barbara Crabo with Eveready and Georgia Langsam with Gauguin Du Cheval 9054.

Eventing: a Major equestrian sPort under scrutiny
editOriAl By BO crABO
w hen one asks a non-equestrian the meaning of eventing, a typical response is a thousand-yard stare . However, if one asked what the layman knows about Christopher Reeves, the actor who played Superman severely injured while eventing, virtually everyone seems to know about the actor’s heroic fight against paraplegia . Not long ago, another engagement of the general public occurred
when The New York Times published an opinion piece under “other sports,” precipitated by a serious accident at a Florida event . Red Hills is where well-known event rider Darren Chiacchia was pinned under his horse after a “slow rotational fall” on the preliminary course . The Times article also reported 15 other fatalities that have occurred worldwide over the last few years . For example, Darren Chiacchia has successfully ridden Windfall II, a Trakehner stallion, at the Olympic Games (Team Bronze 2004), at the Pan American Games (Individual Gold 2003), in Sweden at the World Cup final (placing fifth), and also rode the Swedish-born TB “Better I Do It” placing fourth in the 2007 Pan American Games . The Times article also mentioned that in the entire horse world, especially in the FEI, in the European countries and here in the USA, a perceived increase in fatalities was being discussed . It now appears that American eventing officials are seeking a solution from grassroots efforts ahead of the FEI, who may suggest their own solution to the problem . Many appear to cast blame on the Chief d’Equipe of the US Eventing Team, Captain Mark Phillips . Phillips is a well-known equestrian course designer, and some consider his courses too difficult or unusual . Phillips is the former husband of Princess Anne of England and father of their daughter, Zara Phillips who, like her parents, is also an international event star . Phillips is widely considered to be the prevailing guru of contemporary cross-country course design . The Times article appears to assign blame to the technical obstacle complexes, which require stadium jumping techniques and limited speed . In the midst of these discussions at this premiere US event, Rolex Kentucky resulted in the deaths of two horses and a serious injury to rider Laine Ashker . Riders are asking what has changed in eventing and how does it contrast with the past?
6
The Times correctly stated that the Swedes, led by cavalry officer Clarence von Rosen, introduced eventing to the Olympic committee where it was officially added as an Olympic event in 1912, where Swedes took both the Individual and the Team Gold Medal . All previously used methods of judg-ing style were abandoned, but distances were longer and time elements demanding . Up to the time of the 1956 Equestrian Olympic Games in Stockholm, extra points were awarded to horses that performed faster than the allotted time, both in steeplechase and the cross-country events . Par-ticipants then were largely military officers . For ex-ample, the German word for “eventing” is the Eng-lish word “Military .” Swedes figured prominently in the medals, and at the time, I had no idea that my first riding instructor Major Helmer Mörner, Acad-emy Stablemaster at the University of Uppsala took both Team and Individual Gold at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp . Swedish competitor Hans von Blixen-Finecke and Petrus Kastenman continued on to win Gold Medals at the Games in 1952 and 1956, respectively . Interest in eventing cooled considerably in Sweden following the Stockholm Games after the Swedish horse Iller was euthanized after a fractured femur occurred before a large crowd including Queen Elizabeth, whose own horse competed . Eventing has long been a prominent equestrian sport in the United Kingdom New nations have risen to the sport’s top ranks in subsequent years, including Austra-lia, New Zealand (riders in the latter likely stimulated by Mark Todd and his fantastic mount “Charisma”) and the United States .
The second day of the three-day eventing has been discussed as too tiring for horses . The second day encompasses road and tracks Phases A and C, executed at bicycle speed . The exhausting steeplechase Phase C and the final cross-country Phase D is where accidents occurred involving both riders and horses . Although no longer extra points were awarded for very fast rides (on the contrary “speeding tickets” were awarded for fast rides in the lower levels in National US shows), FEI decided to eliminate steeplechase and road and tracks phases . However, it remains unclear whether this was done for safety or due to scarcity of land for those phases . Many US riders (and the discussion is ongoing) claim that these rules favor Europeans, with their heavier warmbloods, better suited to dressage than the speed and stamina of the American Thoroughbreds . Now, both forms of eventing are being offered, but it appears that international shows are staying with the short format .
And what of course design when the short format became favored? To distinguish between horses, the cross-country phase needed to become more challenging . Obstacles heightened technically, and had to be ridden in “show jumping style,” and riders complained that this interrupted the riders’ rhythm they liked to maintain throughout the course . These changes made it quite difficult to make time .
Officials rightly ask themselves, ‘just how dangerous is the sport?’ Does it become more dangerous when the intent is to decrease falls? This con-troversy continues worldwide among aficionados . Recently, a Swedish sports journalist suggested that eventing would have been outlawed long ago if it hadn’t been for the public’s passion for horses . However, extensive statistics on the dangers have been provided by the United States Eventing Association (USEA), on falls in 2005 and 2006, and fatalities for 1996 through 2006 . (For more detail, see www .useventing .com - under Competitions and Safety) . In 2005, there were a staggering 40,975 starts and in 2006, 44,324 for all levels . Recorded falls were 556 and 601 for these two years, respectively . Recorded injuries — from winded to concussions and broken bones — were 91 and 108, respectively . Thus, the likelihood of falling during cross-country is a remote 0 .067%, but if a rider falls off the mount, chance of injury is approximately one in six . In the 12-year period from 1995 through 2006, 8 deaths were recorded, which amounts to one rider fatality per 59,179 starters or per 1,183,610 jumps . One is unlikely to see better statistics on safety while driving a car . During the period from 2000 to 2006, there were three recorded fatalities . Of those, a young girl with the Swedish sounding name Eriksson at Galway Downs in California had eliminated herself at the water complex but the jump judge was unable to stop her from making a final and sadly fatal attempt . Most of the 2005-2006 incidents occurred at the lower levels (Beginner Novis 19, Novis 25, Training 25, and Preliminary 33) versus 10 at the Intermediate and four at the Advanced level .
Whether incidents increased or decreased with the abandonment of phases A, B and C it is still probably too early to document . Captain A . S . Gleen argues in a recent article in The Chronicle of the Horse, that the road and tracks phase as well as the steeplechase prepares the muscles for the cross-country . Thus, the question arises, what good is achieved by eliminating these phases if it doesn’t result in increased safety? Current discussions advocate letter-writing campaigns to the USEA as well as The Chronicle of the Horse from grassroots riders . USEF and USEA presidents

have jointly written advice on tougher rules . At this time, one thing is clear: No association or federation can legislate safety — it must reside with the individual upper-level rider to assume this responsibility . Instructors may need to assume increased responsibility for students at the lower levels . Furthermore, the requirements for upgrading a horse and rider to the next level may be more stringent . However, the discussion must be based on factual circumstances of documented injuries and not perceptions .
Where this leaves Swedish Warmblood horses in eventing is unclear . Although probably not as prominent as in dressage or show jumping, several horses have been very successful with eventing . Finnish Piia Paantsu with Karuso (by Krocket 651) has placed at the 4-Star level in Badminton and Sara Algotsson with her homebred SWBs (by Robin Z 723) has twice won the World Cup finals . This author began to take great interest in event horse breeding when my daughter-in-law Barbara Crabo joined the family . So far the greatest success was in 2005 with Barbara’s home-bred Eveready (by Irco Mena 763), and our Victoria’s Electra (by Electro 778), both out of TB mares, placing first and second at the Richard Collin’s National CCI* championship (long format) among 46 starters at Galway Downs in California . As of this writing, Eveready is completing his second CCI*** event at Jersey Fresh where another Swedish horse, Kejsarinna, ridden by Maya Black won the CCI** . I do not know how many SWBs are competing in eventing in North America, but the Swedish system has great potential to produce event horses by identifying stallions that can improve on dressage or jumping horses without sacrificing the reciprocal trait, whichever the mare needs . Breeding those stallions to TB mares of good quality should be the key to the event horse of the future . No other registry has progeny testing as an objective as the Swedish system and I hope in the future to see more SWANA registered event horses . The sport is great when responsibility and caution are exercised . Even in my 74th year, I managed to be in the ribbons at the lowest level of eventing, coached by my daughter-in-law, and I still strongly recommend trying the event to others .

Breeding AdviceBy Ulf WAdeBOrN
t he goal of the Swedish breeding registry is to produce horses that have a good and sustainable confirmation, are well rounded, trainable and competitive for all equestrian disciplines .
The question then is how to best breed to reach the goal and criteria of the Swedish Warmblood registry?
1) Mare selection: In my opinion, the careful selection of the mare is more important and difficult than the selection of the stallion . The reason why is because the stallions had to meet very high standards to be approved in the first place . . Therefore, the ideal would be to breed not only with inspected mares but mares that have received either Diploma or are inspected Class I . The maintenance cost for a good versus a mediocre mare is the same; however the potential return on the money will increase if the quality of the offspring is better . The rationale to breed a mare simply because she went lame is not a sensible breeding decision .
2) Picking the appropriate stallion for the mare is also very important . Many breeders are tempted to breed to the new and popular stallion . My advice is: a young mare should be bred to an older and proven stallion, and an older mare that has a long and proven track record can be bred to a younger stallion since you know what the mare produces . Another important factor in choosing a stallion is whether he compliments the mare or not . For instance, a mare with a very long back should be bred to a short backed stallion and vice versa . If the mare has one weak gait make sure that that gait is the strongest in the stallion .
So before you breed your mare or stallion, you need to do a lot of research . There is a lot of information available, and of course SWANA is always available to help .

Advice: Foal ImprintingWe are introducing one of a series of articles written by our members about their tips and views of education and training of young horses . This first article is written by SWANA member KAthy JOAchiM about foal imprinting .
t raining of the young horse begins at birth . Many people call this process imprinting . The concept was first introduced by Dr . Robert Miller about twenty years ago . The premise being that there is a 2 or 3 hour window of opportunity after birth to accomplish the foal’s introduction to how it will be handled by humans and what tasks it must submit to during its life . Don’t despair, however, horses can
learn at any age to be cooperative with humans .
The process of imprinting is best accomplished by a person that the mare is familiar with and trusts . Most mares are very protective of their young and do not like people that they are unfamiliar with around their babies . This person should also be knowledgeable about the birthing process so that if there are any problems a vet can be contacted immediately .
Assuming the birth has gone normally, I begin the imprinting process after the foal is born by applying iodine to its umbilical cord . This is an important step to protect the foal from infections which can have very serious consequences . Next, I have several dry towels on hand to help dry the baby . I rub gently but firmly enough to get the baby used to human’s touch . I rub everywhere, ears, face, neck, belly and legs . This allows the youngster to get used to a human’s touch so that later in its life it will allow grooming, haltering, worming and the farrier . Don’t be surprised if the foal jumps or flinches to this attention — after all they have just come from inside their mother’s womb . During this time I talk softly to the baby so that it gets used to my voice . Young horses are noise sensitive and will relax to soft voices . Always keep an eye on mom and if it appears that she is becoming nervous with any of this process that you can stop and let her relax before proceeding .
In a matter of minutes the young foal will attempt to stand . I usually assist him with this process to limit any chance of injury . Also, it may be necessary to assist the foal with its attempt to nurse and may be necessary to halter the mare if she is maiden . Sometimes the mare is in pain w/ contractions and may make it difficult for the baby to nurse . I usually like to see the baby nurse as soon as possible after birth so they get the valu-able colostrum . Once all of this is accomplished, I leave the mare and baby alone so that they can have time to get used to each other .
In the next three days I spend time with the foal for a few minutes, several times each day . I repeat the process of touching the foal all over and add a few more steps . I’ll put a halter on the baby to get it used to something floppy and heavy on its head . I’ll touch the baby’s legs and pick up each foot . Remember, the baby is still somewhat uncoordinated at this time and you must not attempt to move the foot too much out of place because of this balance issue . As the baby becomes more coordinated you can lift the foot like they’ll need to hold it for the farrier .
On the fourth day of life, I put mom and baby out in a large paddock . The baby is now strong enough to allow some freedom to really move . Since today is the day for going out of the foaling stall, it is the first day the foal will be led . I’ll put the halter on the foal with a long, soft cotton lead . The rope needs to be long enough to come from the halter around the right side of the foal behind its haunches and back to the front of the halter . This method is much safer for the baby as it will prevent the foal from flipping over backward in response to pressure from its head . If the foal does leap up the handler should bend the head towards them and push the hindquarters away with their free hand . Pulling down will only increase the foal’s desire to rear and pull back which can result in the horse flipping over .
Next, I’ll have an assistant lead the mare and the baby will want to follow . If not, I will apply pressure to the lead rope which pulls the babies haunches forward and teaches his whole body to come in response to pressure from the lead . Have the assistant walk slowly with the mare and be prepared to stop and wait for the baby to catch up . I practice this in the foaling stall until things are going fairly well and then we go outside . I always lead the foal in a halter in this manner for at least four months of its life . That way the skills are well ingrained and it becomes easy to handle the foal as it grows .
At this point you have a foal that knows how to lead, pick up its feet, allows touch by humans over its entire body and is well along with the skills it will need later in life as a riding horse .

The inspectors are checking to see whether the horse tracks straight or not (hind legs in the same tracks as the corresponding front legs) as well as how it pushes from the hindquarters and holds “uphill” balance .
• Whentheinspectorsarelookingatthesideofthehorse, trytokeepthehorseingoodbalanceandatthesametimeallowittomove freely . The inspectors are looking at the purity of the gait (2 even beats,) articulation of the joints, freedom of shoulders and haunches, balance, elasticity, swinging back, natural engagement and impulsion from hindquarters, suspension, power and upward thrust, roundness and “uphill” strides .
5 . Standing for inspection • Trytokeepyourhorsestandinginoneplaceinthe“open”position(frontandhindlegsonthesideinspectorsareviewingshould

Review: Falsterbo Horse S how, 2008thOSe ScANdiNAviANS KNOW hOW tO PUt ON A ShOW!By JO MccrAcKeN
a bout 7 years ago, I was fortunate enough to be asked to start hosting clinics for a trainer from Sweden . That’s how I got to know, and have since become great friends with, Mr . Bo Jena . My husband and I finally got to go over this year to Sweden and stay with Bo and his
wife, and it is an experience I will never forget! We purposely went during the week of the biggest show, called Falsterbo . The top riders at the FEI levels and highest levels of jumping from Holland, Denmark, Sweden, etc . meet for this 7-day extravaganza that you really have to see to believe . The show site is near a beach, so one of the days included teams of 3 riders each, doing huge fences on the beach! There were also derby jumping classes that included some pretty crazy cross-country jumps . The caliber of riders and horses in the jumping and dressage events was second to none!
Right behind the jumper ring, the bunny jumping classes were going on . You heard me! There was a course of 9-10 huge jumps, including liverpools and water jumps, where every kind of rabbit, wear-ing a little halter and 20’ lead were jumping like crazy! There was no dragging-they were just placed in front and the ones who did well just were dragging their handlers like the best agility dogs going through a course . There was every breed represented, too, from the tiniest to big lop-ear types . They even had a warm up ring for the bunnies with several jumps . This was the cutest thing ever!
Being a dressage rider, I was really interested in the FEI classes . Again, I’ve NEVER seen a show that was so much fun for the audience and the riders . One day hosted a derby class, where several of the best jumper riders were invited to ride the dressage horses . Here’s the twist, though . The biggest show sponsor was a bed company . So, for the class, a strategically placed bed was next to the ring for the judges, to keep them comfortable . Then, there were kids representing each rider that were encouraged to bring goodies to the judges during their riders’ tests, to “influence” the scores . The riders each wore their favorite bed clothing to ride . Many had head stockings, teddy bears strapped to them and bathrobes . The horses were named appropriate names for the bed company, like, “Sleeping Beauty” and “Nightmare” . The judges were hilarious, commenting on each rider, who made more than a few interpretations of dressage moves! It was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen!
In the serious classes, the atmosphere was different, too . The riders encouraged spectators to watch the warm ups . Then, during the GP Special tests, after each ride, a person from the audience was allowed to ask the rider a question and the ring steward held a microphone for the rider to answer . Riders at this show were real superstars! I saw many kids running around with autographs adorning their arms and caps of riders like Jan Brink . There was a clinic, free to the spectators, one afternoon by two of the top FEI riders, as well .
I think, too, that dressage judges must LOVE to get hired for this show . Since my host was head of appeals committee, I got to see a lot behind the scenes . The show management arranged for one night for the international judges, a real treat . They were taken to Flyinge (state stud/school), where they were picked up by two horse drawn carriages, (one four-in-hand and one double), and driven to an incredible restaurant . It is run by a retired Scottish butler and his chef/wife, who live on the premises and have a thatched-roof old refurbished carriage house that hosts one party per night . Inside, it looks like another century, in the house of a royal . Gary Rockwell was one of the judges present, and I saw his jaw drop more than once! Bo said they had a wonderful evening and meal . It never hurts to keep the judges happy, I say!
I know putting on a show here is very “involved”, but we could really learn a thing or two about putting on a more fun show, both for riders and spectators . From the really good background music, to the accessibility for spectators who want to learn, to the ingenuity of class ideas and courses, you could see why this is such a huge event every year and why thousands attend . There was also a positive atmosphere; everyone was encouraging the riders and really wanting to see them do well, as opposed to over critiques of every test . When it rained, everyone huddled, but no one really left . What an experience! When I die, I’ve decided, I want to return as a horse in Sweden; either at Flyinge, or at Jan Brink’s farm, Tullstorp!
The 2009 Falsterbo Horse Show will take place July 11-19, 2009 . For more information, visit the official site at http://falsterbohorseshow .se/en/

firSt WiSh NO lONger BreediNgThe 2007 stallion test winner first Wish 1103 will no longer be available for breeding at Tullstorp Dressage Stable AB . After a severe throat and respiratory tract infection last fall the stallion has developed the condition of roaring . Veterinarian Jonas Tornell discovered minor changes in the stallion’s throat when examining him in connection with a throat infection in September 2007 . During the fall and winter, it quickly got worse, and First Wish 1103 now has developed the throat disease .
At the stallion approval as a 3-year-old, First Wish 1103 had no indication when examined in the throat . Hence, the disease has developed after the infection .
The president of the inspection committee Karl-Henrik Heimdal, DVM: This throat disease is a so called progressive disease that develops in vary-ing time phases with different individuals until the final stage . The first symptoms of the disease often show at the age of 4-6 and develop into its final stage within a time period varying from a few months to a few years . A throat infection may sometimes initiate and hasten this develop-ment . This throat disease has a complex background, where large horses and horses with long neck are over-represented . Various studies have shown that the condition has a hereditary component . Accordingly, it is on the list of diseases that is regulated by rules of the ASVH as well as the list of defects of the Department of Agriculture DFS 2004:22 . It shall be mentioned however, that a large majority of the off-spring of First Wish 1103 will definitely not get the disease .
Everybody who has offspring or pregnant mares should be very proud of these . The amount of offspring will be limited and the demand for them will be great, says Jan Brink . First Wish is an amazing stallion who has won everything he has ever participated in . According to many of my foreign colleagues, he is the best Fürst Heinrich off-spring ever seen . Of course I think it is sad that we have to take him out of breeding, but rules are rules and they must be followed . That is our policy at Tullstorp, Jan Brink continues . First Wish will now undergo surgery in Germany and then be transferred to his owner Helena Lindmark, who will be focusing on an interesting show career with him .
cheerS cASSiNi APPrOved fOr BreediNgThe stallion cheers cassini (by Cassini I out of Fleur III – Ramino) was presented at this year’s stallion test . However, due to a lack of official show results presented to the Inspection Committee at the time no decision could be made about the stallion . These results are now in, and the Com-mittee has decided to approve the stallion based upon his excellent show career and his very interesting performance oriented pedigree . He showed and placed in many five-star CSI and CSI-W and also was part of the Sony-Ericsson team under Richard Davenport . After a bout of colic he underwent surgery and since then has retired from being ridden . The stallion was awarded breeding class AB, valid until the year 2013 .
The 13 year old stallion was born in Germany, breeder Gerd Magens, and he is owned by Martin Dawes, England . His sire Cassini I is one of the leading sires in show jumping with 37 approved sons in Germany and many offspring performing at the highest level in show jumping . New bLuP Indexes By ÅSA BrAAM, eMMA thOréN hellSteN, ÅSA viKlUNd ANd JAN PhiliPSSONdePArtMeNt Of ANiMAl BreediNg ANd geNeticS, SlU, UPPSAlA, SWedeN
t he year’s BLUP-indexes are here and today there are indexes for 350 stallions and approximately 60, 000 mares . The indexes are based on all the available data from the three year old test, quality test and competition . Stallions awarded an index must have a minimum of 15 evaluated offspring from the three year old test and/or the quality test . In comparison with last year there are 17 new stallions that have
been awarded their first BLUP-index . In conjunction with the publication of the new indexes, the new BLUP web site where one can search for in-dexes of most of the Swedish horses featured in the pedigrees was published as well . The web site is a fantastic tool that is now available through www .warmblood .se . The project with developing the BLUP-index method and the calculation of the indexes is in cooperation with ASVH and SLU (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) and with financial research assistance from the Foundation for Swedish Equine Research .
aLL young horse–and oFFiciaL coMPetition resuLts in juMPing and dressage are incLuded. When calculating an index all the scores from the three year old test, the quality test and competition are included . Since the introduction of the three year old test in 1999, close to 8, 000 horses have been evaluated up until 2007 . The quality testing began in 1973 and up until 2007 more than 18, 000 horses have participated . The results are all included in the calculation of the BLUP-index . Competition results up until 2006 on a regional, national and elite level from close to 40, 000 horses are also included . Due to the inclusion of the results from the three year old test an early review of a stallion’s offspring can be performed . As the offspring get older and evaluated in the quality test and competition, the results as well as the stallion’s index will become more reliable .
resuLts and index For horses in severaL generations The BLUP-indexes are estimated breeding values of what one can predict the horse will pass on to its offspring genetically . In many cases this is in agreement with the individual’s own results and performance, but not always . In calculating an index the horse’s own results are included as well as the results from its relatives from the three year old test, the quality test and from competition . This information is the most objective genetical breeding information we can receive today . BLUP stands for ”Best Linear Unbiased Prediction”, which hints at providing the most accurate and real compilation of all the information with which the individual’s breeding value is computed . In breeding for sport horses the BLUP is utilized in Germany, France, Denmark, Holland, Belgium and Ireland, but in no other country is there such an extensive data base with results from horses of so many generations available as we have in the ASVH (Swedish Warmblood Association) data base .
what horses are awarded an index? For a stallion to be awarded an official index the requirement is a minimum of 15 young horses evaluated in the three year old test or the quality test . Among mares all are awarded an index that either have been evaluated them selves as a young horse (three year old test or quality test) or have competed or have had at least one offspring with results of its own . Also, all young mares are awarded a pedigree index under the condition both of the parents have a BLUP-index . This way one can receive a good foundation for an initial selection of young mares for breeding .
are aLL indexes coMParabLe? Since the scores from the young horse evaluations are subjective, every horse’s results are compared with the mean score for all other horses that were evaluated at the same time . To evaluate the competition results, horses are compared within the same year of birth . Simultaneously the genetic level of evaluated and competition horses are taken into account through the utilization of the pedigree information . One of the advan-tages of the BLUP-method is the correction for the quality of the mares a stallion has bred (and vice versa) . This means that a stallion’s breeding index is automatically corrected if he is breeding lower or higher quality mares than the average . The indexes for all horses, regardless of age or generation, are directly comparable with one another . Due to the great progress in breeding that has taken place during the last 15-20 years it gets tougher for older stallions and mares to maintain their status as breeding animals . The graph depicts the breeding progress that has been made since the mid-80’s, especially in jumping .
the bLuP-index Mirrors the breeding goaLIn order to mirror the proposed breeding goal for the breed the BLUP-index is published for eleven different traits . In the calculations the herit-ability (indicates how much of the trait is due to the genes in relationship to how much is due to the environment) of the traits are utilized as well as the internal relations (how the traits comply with each other when inherited) . The main indexes are the two competition indexes in dressage and in jumping .
18
three conForMation traitsThe horse’s conformation quality is proposed in three different indexes: Height at the withers, Sport horse type (average of the score for Type and Head-neck-body) and Legs . The conformation index is from the results of 4 years of age, but is also compiled from the results from the three year old test due to the relationship between the results from different ages .
three juMPing traits The main index in jumping is first and foremost about the ability to succeed in competition through the trait Accumulated championship scores . The partial indexes Technique and ability and Temperament and overall impression indicate the expected breeding performance as they are ex-pressed at 4 years of age . In calculating the jumping indexes all the results from the three year old test, quality test and competition are included and contribute through the relationships that exist genetically between the different traits .
dressage index For Five traits Just like in jumping there is a main index in dressage that mirrors the competition results . There are also four partial indexes: Walk, Trot, Canter and Temperament and overall impression under rider . The partial indexes are based on the results from the quality test even if both the three year old test and the competition results contribute through the relationships that exist genetically with the 4 year old results .
three day event index?Due to the fact that so few horses compete in three day eventing it is not possible to calculate a BLUP-index with a satisfactory reliability in this particular discipline .
what does 100 in index Mean? The BLUP-indexes are so constructed that 100 is the equivalent to the mean index of horses of today . This so called reference group consists of all horses that have been tested (three year old test, quality test and competition) and that are between the ages of 4 and 18 the year of evalua-tion . For every year the reference group will move up one year so it will always consist of current horses in the breed . This means that if we have a great annual genetic progress, the index for older horses will depreciate somewhat on a yearly basis due to being compared to successively better horses . The approved stallions are a selected group and as such should have a higher mean index than other horses . The table down below indicates that stallions up to 18 years of age on an average has an index of 110 .

the reLiabiLity oF an indexThe reliability of an index is depending on the type of information that forms the basis of each individual’s index . More information on the individ-ual itself, offspring, sire, dam and other relatives presents an index with a higher reliability . Other information like the amount of evaluated horses and heritability affects the reliability as well . The measure used is called standard deviation and is on the same scale as the index . The standard deviation indicates in which interval the horse’s index most likely would be in, should a new calculation of the breeding value be performed . In other words, a low value for the standard deviation is the equivalent to an index with a high reliability .
new web site with a great search engine! As earlier mentioned and also in an article in the publication Ridsport issue #2, the BLUP-indexes are now published on a brand new web site . You can find it via www .warmblood .se . Other than the individual horses’ indexes there is information on the results from young horse tests and competition and four generational pedigrees . There is also the opportunity to rank both stallions and mares for different partial indexes .
FaMous staLLions at the toPJust like previous years irco Marco and irco Mena have the highest BLUP-index for the main index in jumping . With a high index placing him fourth is the Irco Marco son feliciano . cardento maintains his third place from last year . Fifth and seventh place are awarded to the stallions to receive their first indexes this year, camiell-flamingo Z (by Catango Z – Ronald), unfortunately no longer a stallion, and corland (by Cor de la Bryère – Landgraf I), the latter utilized through imported semen . Younger stallions that have established themselves at the top now that they have 4-year old offspring evaluated are camaro M (by Calido I – Landgraf I), dirco hästak (by Irco Mena – Caracas) and emmerton (by Emilion – Nim-merdor) . The latter is unfortunately no longer in the country, but did produce the newly approved (2007) stallion Niveau before leaving .
In dressage don Primero once again has the highest index with the exported stallion (USA) Bolero a close second, the semen import de Niro and the legendary chagall all have indexes above 140 . The first and only newcomer on the “top ten list” is the Swedish born Bocelli (by Don Schufro – Bernstein) in fifth place after a stellar performance with his first 3 year old crop . Other active stallions that have assured their ability now
19
that they have offspring that have been evaluated at the quality test and in competition are rambo (by Chapman - Lansiär), who has produced the in the WBFSH Young Horse World Championships successful full siblings Hermes and Gicea . rubinrot (by Rubinstein – Insider) and dionysos (by De Niro – Rubinstein) also have shown great promise with their young horse crops .
Five out of the 17 new stallions with a BLUP-index this year (see table) are Swedish born, otherwise the Holsteiner bloodlines are dominant . All stallions except three have either a jumping-or dressage index above 115, six in dressage and eight in jumping . The overall very good results for the new stallions indicate that the selection for new stallions through either the stallion performance test or through the approval process for import of semen have proven very successful .

10/07/08: ONtAriO, cANAdAMoulson or Labatt Blue? 2008 Inspection Tour Synopsis By KAtAriNA ANteNS-Miller ANd By chriStiNA OlSON.
iNSPectiON At A glANce
t he inspection tour of 2008 was a great experience for first timer, Christina Olson . She and her co-judge Lars Berglund met wonderful and hospitable horse people who presented them a number of really nice horses for the inspection .
“What else is there to wish for?” she remarked .
Overall Christina thought that the horses were well handled and presented . She was especially impressed by the behavior and dispositions of the young stallions they inspected .
Her observations of the American bred SWB horses are as follows:
• Theyexhibitawiderangeofbloodlines,especiallyonthe mother’s side .
• Thereisalargerepresentationofthoroughbredbroodmares. • The“types”variedacrossallthehorses,whichshethoughtwas
mainly due to breeding for different purposes .
In conclusion she thought that they had seen a number of top talented young horses for both jumping and dressage, of the high quality that train-ers and riders would love having in Sweden . They also saw some very high class foals in excellent condition . Her final note to all breeders was to stay focused on each and everyone’s respective breeding goal . This is an impor-tant objective worldwide, but as she remarked earlier, since there is a wide range of breeds used here (especially the thoroughbreds) the US breeders need to be more conscientious about their choices of mares than perhaps the Swedish breeders do .
Last but not least, she wanted to extend her thanks to all participants, horse owners, hosts and visitors that contributed to a wonderful inspec-tion tour!
APPrOved StAlliONS tip top Sterling was the one and only stallion to be approved by the judg-es in the 2008 tour . His final scores were 9-8-8-9-8 = 42 and 9-8-9-9 under rider . Congratulations to Leslie Morse!
