Summer Winds Camp is designed to jump-start the final weeks before returning from summer break, as well as learn the fundamentals of a brand-new instrument in just 5 days. Students will play in full camp ensemble with music arranged for the camp’s specific instrumentation. Every student will learn to play a secondary instrument from the family of “less common” band instruments. This ranges from bassoon, oboe, trombone, horn, and tuba and varies from year to year. Students will chose their secondary instrument on the first day of camp with the help of our Summer Winds Camp staff. A new option this year: Any student embarking on a new instrument for the school year or contemplating a switch can spend the entire camp on the new instrument. In addition to playing opportunities, students are introduced to advanced musical concepts including composition. At the end of the week, students will perform on both their primary and secondary instruments in a final concert open to the public.
Summer Winds Camp welcomes two types of students: Early stage players: 1 to 2 years of experience, beginning to learn the full potential range. Beginning to understand dynamics/articulations/ensemble playing. Beginnings of scales and arpeggios as well as chromatic scale. Can follow a conductor and understand intonation (though not always knowing if they are sharp or flat).
Later stage players: 3+ years of experience on a primary instrument and/or have been asked or have been thinking about playing another, less common instrument (bassoon, oboe, trombone, tuba). Understanding of how to control air and fingers for the purposes of wind playing.
For students who are new to New Jersey Youth Symphony, a video submission is required prior to registration. Video requirement is waved for current NJYS students. Video submission instructions are available at NJYS.org.
