Subject-Based Banding

(SBB)

18

Standard vs. Foundation Subject

Foundation subjects put focus on mastery of

core content and skills.

These are pitched at a lower level as

compared to the corresponding standard

subject.

19

Rationale and Intent

Providing our weaker Students a differentiated curriculum that would best maximize their potential.

These Students may have particular strengths, and we should develop them as much as possible by offering them specific subjects at a higher (standard) level of study.

20

Guidelines for Subject Combinations

Pass 3 or more subjects at P4 offer 4 subjects at the standard level at P5

Pass 2 or less subjects at P4 may offer foundation subjects

Higher Mother Tongue Languages

(HMT) at P5

Extra 1 hr/week taught outside curriculum

time.

Students will sit for both MTL & HMTL

papers.

School will recommend Students who are able

to cope with HMTL at the end of the year.

25

Higher Mother Tongue Languages (HMT)

at P5

Option to take HMTL at P5 is given only once at

the end-of-year at P4

Subsequent movement at end of P5 for P6 will be

based solely on your child’s performance and the

school’s decision.

Results for HMT will NOT be used for calculation

of the PSLE aggregate score.

ONLY the MT grades (i.e. CL/ML/TL) will be used

for the calculation of the PSLE aggregate score.

26

HMT

Even if Students did not talk HMT at Pri Schools, they

can still opt to offer HMT at Sec schools if they are in

the

Top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or

Top 11%—30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the

language criteria i.e. an A* grade in the MTL or at

least a Merit in HMTL.

27

28

1. Consider your child’s interest and ability

• Is the child performing very well in the language?

• Does your child enjoy the language?

• How is the child’s performance in other subjects?

• Time management (weekly additional lessons in the

afternoon, other remedial/enrichment/ supplementary

lessons for other subjects, CCAs)

MT or HMT?

29

2. Demands of HMT

- Emphasis on strong language competency

- Course expectations are raised substantially as

compared to P4

3.Secondary School Option - Do you intend to let your child apply to a SAP

schools after PSLE?

MT or HMT?

Bonus points for taking HMT

ONLY applicable if your child is in the Top 30%

of the PSLE cohort and is going to a SAP

secondary school.

Distinction – 3 points

Merit – 2 points

Pass – 1 point
