THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
June 3, 2018
Gospel: (Mark 14: 12-16, 22-26) While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the
blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said,
“Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup,
gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank
from it. He said to them, “This is my blood of the
covenant, which will be shed for many.
Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of
the vine until the day when I drink it new in the
kingdom of God.” Then, after singing a hymn, they
went out to the Mount of Olives.
Reflection: Jesus’ identity as the suffering servant who obtained redemption for us “with his own blood” is truly the same as his mission – to give of himself without counting the cost, even if its cost is his very body and blood. Self-giving unites identity and mission into the same reality. This solemnity brings us once again to Jesus’ self-giving on the cross and to continue self-giving in the Eucharist, and challenges us to take up Jesus’ mission of self-giving. The Eucharist is the centerpiece of our lives, challenging us: our identity is our mission – self-giving.

Fifth Grade News It’s hard to believe but the school year is almost over. The 5th graders have learned and achieved so much throughout this school year. This trimester they dissected squids in the science lab, and they had a blast!!!! Also they are learning about the Inca’s and Mayan’s and they created amazing projects. We have started to read Home of the Brave which is teaching them about Refugees and the struggles they go through when they come to the United States. Plus the book is teaching them about idioms, proverbs and other figurative language. The 5th graders are learning so much, it’s exciting to see all of their accomplishments.
Walk-a-Thon 2018 On Friday May 25th the entire St. Mel’s community came together for the annual Walk-a-Thon. Faculty, students, and parents enjoyed the beautiful day walking around Bowne Park. After all the walking had ended, everyone enjoyed a BBQ in the school yard compliments of the Parent Academy Association. There was even an appearance from the energetic Wildcat who was full of school spirit! Thank you to everyone who made this year’s walk-a-thon a continued success. Go St. Mel’s!
OFFICE OF FAITH FORMATION RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
OF ADULTS or OLDER CHILDREN
Are you interested in the Catholic faith? Maybe, you have been coming to church for a while but are not Catholic.
Have you been baptized Catholic or validly baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to be fully initiated into the Catho-lic faith through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Communion?
If you answered yes, to any of these questions, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith through a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults or RCIA. It is also adapted for older children seeking full initiation into the Catholic Church and is sometimes referred to as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (“RCIC”).
Our parish offers a set of RCIA and RCIC sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our church family. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open welcoming environment. These sessions are also an opportunity for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you have about the Catholic faith.
If you are interested in joining this special journey of faith, contact the Office of Faith Formation at stmelsdderosa@gmail.com or call the Office of Faith Formation at 718-461-9840.

In the month of May, we honor in a special way the Blessed Virgin Mary and our Mothers. We might reflect on insight of a Theologian Father Andre
Feuillet, It is through the mediation of women that people are increasingly given anew to society. Let us love our lady. By reciting the rosary and special prayers to Mary we invoke her intercession in restoring a Culture of Life. Bishop DiMarzio’s Prayer for Vocation
Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of Your Church. You have told us
that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the
challenge of the New Evangelization.
We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the
priesthood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support
those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future.
Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the
deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your
call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and
religious life.
We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ the Great High Priest, Amen.
