WATER
Service Interruptions
99.96% of customers experienced NO SERVICE INTERRUPTIONS.
For the week, there were 13 main leaks and 260 service
interruptions.
Outdoor Water Savings
LADWP continues to help residential and commercial customers
save on their outdoor water use by offering rebates for weather-
based irrigation controllers and both rotary and rotating sprinkler-
head nozzles. For fiscal year 2017-18 through February, LADWP
provided rebates for 2,298 weather-based controllers and nozzles
and 5,486 sprinkler-head nozzles. Those devices combined are
expected to save about 29.3 million gallons of drinking water –
enough to supply water to nearly 300 homes annually.
Rebates for Residential Water Savings
LADWP residential customers continued to benefit from an array of rebates for water-saving devices for their homes. Among rebates that yielded the biggest water savings for the first seven months of fiscal year 2017-18 are high-efficiency clothes washers and high-efficiency toilets, which are expected to save about 33 million gallons and 10.5 million gallons of water respectively on an annual basis. Other rebates provided by LADWP offset the cost of new cisterns, moisture sensors and rain barrels. Altogether, the total amount of
water saved for that period is enough to serve 404 homes per year.
POWER
Outages
92.98% customers experienced NO OUTAGES
For the week, there were 518 outage incidents, affecting 105,233
customers, including:
54 full and partial circuit outages that affected 55,468 customers
mostly in Beverly Grove, Bel-Air, Palms, Rancho Park, and
Pacific Palisades.
45 transformer outages that affected 1,174 customers mostly
in North Hills, Beverly Grove, Valley Glen, Van Nuys, and
Venice.
Wind Storm Outages
LADWP crews were out in force during the April 12-14 wind storm
that wreaked havoc among power lines. Thanks to our crews’ 24/7
efforts, about 99.5 percent of customers affected had their power
restored within 24 hours, and the average outage lasted just over
3 hours. The wind-related outages affected 30,832 customers in
the areas of Palms, Rancho Park, Hyde Park Westchester, Beverly
Grove, Pacific Palisades, Sherman Oaks and Eagle Rock.
HEIP Helps Customers Save Energy and Water
During the month of March 2018, LADWP’s Home Energy
Improvement Program upgraded 240 homes with energy and water
efficiency measures. The home efficiency measures are estimated
to save up to 495,133 kilowatt-hours. That amount of conservation
is equivalent to providing energy for about 83 homes, and avoiding
187 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, which equates to
removing 41 gas-fueled cars from the road. The HEIP measures
also will save more than 2.53 million gallons of water annually,
which is enough drinking water for 23 homes.
Free LEDs Help Light Up L.A.
LADWP’s second LED distribution to all 1.5 million electric
customers continued during the week. As of April 15, a total
300,000 LEDs had been delivered to communities through Los
Angeles. By replacing two 75-watt incandescent or CFL lamps with
the two 12-watt LED bulbs they receive, our customers can expect
to save a combined 138 kilowatt-hours annually for the life of the
bulbs, estimated to last nearly 23 years. Customers who make the
switch can also save up to $476 in electric costs over the lifetime of
those two LEDs. So far the residential lighting distribution is
expected to save up to 41,400 megawatt-hours annually for up to
23 years.
NEWS & NOTES
Earth Day @ Grand Park
In celebration of Earth Day, LADWP and our partners, Grand Park
and The Music Center, hosted a special Earth Day celebration at
Grand Park on April 19. The event, now in its fifth year, gave
Downtown L.A. residents, workers, students and visitors ideas on
how to live clean and go green. The event featured more than
20 informational booths about environmental topics such as energy
efficiency and water conservation, sustainable gardening tours,
composting workshops, electric vehicle demonstrations, and guided
tours of Grand Park’s sustainable landscaping. About 35 LADWP
employees and members of the Speakers Bureau staffed the one-
day event to present information and lead demonstrations.
