STAR OF THE SEA PARISH GLADSTONE
We acknowledge the Gooreng Gooreng, Bailai & Gurang people, traditional custodians of this place we now call Gladstone.
MASS SCHEDULES CHANGED NEXT WEEKEND. There will be only three Masses. Saturday 6pm
Vigil, Sunday 6pm both in Star of the Sea. Our Feast day Mass Sunday 9am at Chanel College.
It is a rare occasion when we can gather as a Parish Family to worship and celebrate. Our special thanks to Principal Dr Susan Bunkum and the Chanel College Community for hosting this Feast of Mary. All other Mass schedules next weekend are cancelled to enable us to celebrate our Feast Day together.
Feast day
Schedules
This year, for convenience, our Parish feast celebration is moved
to Sunday Sept.10. While Sept. 12 is the actual Feast celebrated by all branches of the Marist Family, the origins of how the Parish was christened “Star of the Sea” in 1901 are unclear. Most likely a combination of devotion to Mary in earlier generations and the fact that priests since the beginning were Marists. As Pope Francis reflected, “Star of the Sea” is a name rich in meaning, helping us appreciate our Marian origin, spirit and identity. Mary, pray for you children.
Next Sunday
Our Feast day “In Biblical times, and still today, names had great
meaning. Mary’s is no different. In Hebrew, Mary’s name would have been ‘Miryam’, which means
“sovereign lady.” Although there are many other interpretations, the most commonly used translation of Mary’s name is “Star of the Sea”, so perfect because of Mary’s role in the plan of Salvation...
“September 12 marks the feast of the Holy Name of Mary in the Catholic Church. On this day, we venerate Mary’s name, since she is the Mother of God, the holiest of all creatures. After the Assumption, she was crowned Queen of heaven and earth. That makes her name a royal one, worthy of our respect. So when we refer to Mary as “Star of the Sea,” we recall that, like stars in the sky, Mary’s task...is to reflect the Light. Physical stars in the sky reflect the Sun’s light. Mary reflects the Light of her Son, Jesus Christ.”
As “Star of the Sea,” Mary acts as a guide, always leading us to our Lord. In times of turbulent waters, Mary is a beacon, leading us out of danger and away from harm. When caught in a storm, she intercedes for us all. When we utter Mary’s name, we’re honouring her as Mother and Queen and recalling her holiness and intercessory “power.” - Pope Francis
Why Mary’s ‘name day’ is special ?
Mary’s name, therefore, is really more than just a name. It’s a prayer, in and of itself.

CHANEL COLLEGE YEAR 10 STUDENTS showed their tender side at
last Thursday’s Class Mass expressing their love and concern for their Dads & Grand Dads. They prayed beautiful prayers. Let’s re-echo today their prayers for all Dads & Grand Dads.
Dear Lord, we pray for Pope Francis, the spiritual Father of all Catholics. May he be a guide for us all into peace and happiness with God.
Dear Lord, We pray for all the Fathers around the world; Fathers that have lost their chil-dren, who might be struggling with separation from their kids and also for children who may have lost their Father. Give strength to all the Fathers around the world to help them through tough times and to help them continue to love and raise their family.
Dear Lord, We pray Australian Fathers and the amazing BBQ’s games that are played within families with Dads—may they continue to make awesome memories for their kids and relatives as we celebrate Fathers Day.
Thank you Jesus for my Father who loves me, for Grandad who cares for me and for my God the eternal Father who made me. We pray God is always with us and our Fathers.

CHILD PROTECTION WEEK September 3 - 9 The focus this year is to encourage everyone to have a listening heart that sees and hears the voice of each of our children. As Pope Francis observed, “It is important to listen: this is the key word. Do not forget, listen to the
sick and marginalized, or among families. As guardians, each of us plays a part in listening to what the children have to say, making sure that every child is safe and protected from abuse and harm.“ Our Parish team, School staffs and volunteers are complying with our local diocesan policies, procedures, initiatives. Most have had recent training to ensure Children in our care are safe. Please be alert to any risks.
