Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners, This week we begin “my favorite month of the year,” as my mother used to say, because it was when the kids all went back to school! And of course the routine of the various groups in the parish resume their regularly scheduled meetings and activities that usually take a break for the summer months. Our two new priests have settled into the rectory and have begun to get used to the routine of things, and each of them will be taking special responsibility in certain aspects of parish life, ie:

POPE FRANCIS ~ ANGELUS at Saint Peter's Square

1st Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1–2, 6–8 Responsorial: Psalm 15:2–5 2nd Reading: James 1:17–18, 21–22, 27 Gospel: Mark 7:1–8, 14–15, 21–23

Dear Brothers and Sisters: The Gospel of this Sunday presents a dispute between Jesus and some Pharisees and scribes. The discussion concerns the value of the "tradition of the ancients" (Mark 7:3) and Jesus, quoting the prophet Isaiah, defines them as the "precepts of men"(v.7) (i.e man-made rules) and they can never take the place of the "commandment of God"(v.8). These ancient rules and rituals included not only the precepts of God revealed to Moses, but also a series of dietary laws and cleanliness laws that were followed to specify the indications of the Mosaic law. [For example, there were certain foods that cannot be eaten and certain ways to wash before eating, believing that if these procedures were not followed this made you unclean.] Those speaking with Jesus that day applied these rules in a very scrupulous way and presented them as an expression of authentic religiosity. The answer Jesus gives them has the strength of a prophetic pronouncement: By neglecting the commandment of God, he says, you observe the tradition of men. These are words that fill us with admiration for our Master! But be careful! With these words, Jesus wants to warn us too, today, to not believe that the outward observance of the law is sufficient to be a good Christian. As with the Pharisees of Jesus’ day, there is also the danger for us of considering ourselves okay or worse - better than others just by observing the right Church rules or customs, all the while being hard of heart, not loving our neighbor, thinking we are superb. The literal observance of the rules of conduct is something meaningless if it does not change the heart and does not translate into concrete attitudes: opening oneself to the encounter with God and his Word in prayer, seeking justice and peace, helping the poor, the weak, the oppressed. We all know, in our parishes, in our communities and neighborhoods, what bad this kind of exterior observance of rules with no interior transformation can do to the Church; what scandal it is for the Church when people who say they are very Catholic

and go to church but in their daily lives, they neglect their family, on speak badly about others and so on. This is what Jesus vehemently condemns, because this is a Christian counter-witness. Continuing in his exhortation, Jesus focuses his attention on a deeper aspect and affirms: "There is nothing outside the man who, by entering him, can make him unclean. But it is the things that come out of man to make him unclean" (v.15). Once again, Jesus underlines the primacy of the interiority, that is the primacy of the heart. It is not the external things that make us saints or not saints, but it is the heart that expresses our intentions, our choices and the desire to do everything for God's sake. Outward attitudes are the consequence of what we have decided in our hearts, but not the other way around. In other words, no amount of religiosity, or pious conduct and rule following will make you a true Christian if the heart does not change. We can ask ourselves: where is my heart? Jesus said: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Mt 6:21). So what is my treasure? Is my

treasure Jesus, is it his teachings? Or is the treasure another thing? Therefore, it is the heart that must be purified and converted. Without a purified heart, one can not have truly clean hands and lips that pronounce sincere words of love - everything else is counterfeit, a double life. Lips that pronounce words of mercy, of forgiveness ~ only the sincere and purified heart can do it. Let us ask the Lord, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin, to give us a pure heart, free from all hypocrisy. This is the adjective that Jesus says to the Pharisees: "hypocrites", because they say one thing and make it another. A heart free from all hypocrisy, so that we are able to live according to the spirit of the law and reach its goal, which is love.

is the journey of preparation for those who seek to know Jesus Christ in their lives and desire a conversion of heart, and then be gradually introduced to the Catholic faith and way of life. This process is for adults and older children who: have never been baptized, or baptized in another

denomination & is considering becoming Catholic, or

who are baptized Catholic but are not yet in full communion with the Church through First Eucharist and Confirmation.

Our RCIA team are made up of parishioners who love the Lord and His Church and are excited to help facilitate each person's unique experience of God's love and call in their lives. COME AND SEE on Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00pm at Good Shepherd Church.

RCIA is not just

education for adults

who want to become

Catholic, with rituals

marking their journey.

RCIA is bigger than

that! It is a WAY of

faith… Jesus called

himself “the way, the truth, and the life”.

To follow Jesus is to

become fully one with

him and his WAY of

life.

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 2, 2018

While the historical books of the Bible recount God's creative and redemptive acts in history, the Psalms reveal Israel's response to God's covenant offer and serve as a model for our response to Him. The Psalms come from the deeply personal perspective of one who is seeking God. Our communication with God is enhanced by a deeper understanding of the book of Psalms and of the individual psalms that reside in each of our hearts.

This is a 10-week study starting September 27th Thursdays 1:00pm or 7:00pm

No Cost (optional study guide $20).

An opportunity to explore life, meaning and the Christian faith, in a friendly, open and informal environment. Alpha is not so much a course, but an experience! Gathering once a week over a 8-wk period, each Alpha experience brings together people from every walk of life. We begin each Alpha sharing some light refreshments, then we watch a 20-25min video, followed by a chance to share your thoughts in an informal small group setting. No question is out of bounds or too silly or too simple. We explore topics such as: Is there more to life than this? Who is Jesus? Why did Jesus die? Why and how do I pray? Alpha has no prerequisites whatsoever. There is no pressure and no follow up. We come together with one another as we are, free to be ourselves. Starting:
