“FROM THE HEART” ~ A CONCERT BY JOSHUA KINN
Join us for an hour of inspirational and joyful songs from the heart of Joshua Kinn. Joshua is a 2012 graduate of St. Wendelin Catholic School. He currently attends the University of Toledo majoring in bio-medical engineering and is the Youth Music Director at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee. Joshua embraced his musical
ministry and released his first CD “From The Heart” in 2015. “From The Heart” is a collection of prayers that were turned into songs written and composed by Joshua, sharing his emotional journey of desolation to pure love.
Through his music and lyrics, Joshua celebrates with a message that life is so much better when you have the promise of victory. His latest CD release “Cease Fire” is a joy-filled album inspired by the awareness that life is challenging and sometimes knocks us down, but remembering that God has already won the battles we are
facing in the war zone of our hearts and minds is truly a victory.
All are welcome to attend this free event on
Thursday, November 17th at 7:00 PM in
St. Wendelin Catholic Church.
THOUGHTS ON THE MASS OF SAINT WENDELIN
Dear Friends, The last few weeks have been very exciting for our
parish! Between the parish mission, to celebrating our patron, to the tabernacle blessing with Bishop Thomas, we have had a lot to celebrate. It has been a joyous time! In the mix of all that, we have begun using the Mass of Saint Wendelin. Fr. Todd noted that I would write an article on my thoughts behind this new work, so here it is.
First, a short history: the naming of Mass settings dates back to the 14th century with the first through-composed setting by French composer, Guillaume de Machaut. His setting was titled Messe de Notre Dame. As you can imagine, this setting was composed for Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Since then, Mass settings have been named after many saints, people, and places. Other simple titles occur such as J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor or Beethoven's Missa Solemnis (Solemn Mass).
Every composer is different in their approach, but each composer has a certain background or theme in mind when writing a piece. My first spark for the Mass of Saint Wendelin actually occurred almost a year ago, but it never materialized. However, I also never forgot what the theme sounded like, so when we made plans to move the tabernacle near the weekend of our feast day, the thought of beginning the new Mass setting that weekend made me jump on the composition process.
As Fr. Todd spoke about in his homily, Saint Wendelin was the son of a Scottish king. While he left home and settled in Germany, it was his country of origin that gave me the theme for the Mass setting. The Scottish folk song “Loch Lomond” has always been a favorite of mine, especially since I have traveled to Scotland and sailed on Loch Lomond. The song is peaceful, yet strong, yet contemplative, yet regal. It is the melody from the chorus of this song around which I based the entire Mass setting. The melody is never fully quoted note-for-note, but is closest in the “Glory to God” during the first eight measures that are sung. The melody or harmony is quoted in some way, whether in its original form or in variation, in every song in the Mass setting.
My goal was to compose a setting that would be noble, simple, and singable, but could be ornamented by other instrumentation to sound more complex for more festive occasions. Knowing that we have brass, handbells, and woodwinds in our music ministry made it an easy choice to compose parts for those instruments. I also tried to utilize some alternate harmonies in order that not every piece or movement sounded exactly the same even with a similar melody. The whole process from first note to last note took approximately four weeks.
This setting is my gift to the parish in thanks for the wonderful impact you have made on my life in my time here. I hope it serves us well and helps us to praise and glorify God, the giver of all gifts. May he, through the intercession of Saint Wendelin, continue to bless our parish for years to come.
