Fr. Ignacio’s Homily - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time,
Year A - Jer 20:7-9; Rom 12:1-2; Mat 16:21-27
An ancient Chinese proverb goes like this: “If you want to be happy for an hour, take a nap. If you want to be happy for a day, go fishing. If you want to be happy for a week, take a trip. If you want to be happy for a year, inherit money. If you want to be happy for a lifetime, serve others.” In today’s second reading, we hear from St. Paul who was writing to the Christian church in Rome, where he develops one of his themes: that of the new person transformed by the power of Christ. As Christians, we believe that our bodies belong to God just as much as our minds and our souls, so we can serve God by the correct use of our bodies as well as with our minds. St. Paul takes this notion a step further when he says to us: take all the tasks that you have to do every day; take the ordinary work of the shop, the factory, the office, the home; and offer it all as an act of worship to God. What St. Paul is saying is that we can offer true worship to God with all that we do every day with our bodies. Real worship is the offering of the everyday life to Him; something which sees the whole world as the temple of the living God. Many people say, "I am going to church to worship God," but we should also be able to say, "I am going to the store, the office, the school, the garden, to worship God." But this kind of approach to the spiritual life demands a radical change in us. In order to do this, St. Paul says, we must not be con-formed to the world, but transformed from within. What he is saying to us is: "Don't try to match your life to all the fashions of this world; don't be like a chameleon which takes its colour from its surroundings, change must come from within." To worship and serve God, we must undergo a change, not of our outward form, but of our inward self. St. Paul knows that left to us we would live a life dominated by human nature and its basic instincts, but now, in Christ we live a life transformed by the Holy Spirit, hence we live now, not a self-centred, but a Christ-centred life. If we believe that Christ lives in us, then we must allow that Otherwise, he would have accepted Jesus prediction of his suffering and death as a necessary part of God's plan for the
salvation of the world. But Peter did not accept it. He chose rather, to put his own personal needs and wants ahead of God’s will. That is why Christ said to him, "Get behind me Satan." St. Paul knows, that it is not enough for us to just call our-selves Christians and continue to live our lives as everyone else, conforming to the dictates of fad, fashion, and society. If we want to do God’s will, we must allow ourselves to be transformed by what we know, by what we have been given. We must put on a new mind set. The focus of our lives must not be ourselves; that is the way of the world. The way of Christ is the way of sacrificial love, which means living for the good of others out of love for God.

Notice to Parishioners New By-Law Requires Mandatory Use of Masks at Church
I want to thank all of you for your co-operation and kindness as we have returned to church
over these past weeks. It has been so great to see parishioners once again and I thank everyone
who has been so helpful in this re-opening stage, especially our wonderful volunteers. Thank
you! As you may have heard in recent days, a new by-law has been passed by the York Region
council that makes the use of masks or face coverings inside all public places mandatory as of
Friday, July 17; this includes churches. I would ask that all those coming to church bring a
mask or face covering and wear it upon entering the church. I recognize that this may be an inconvenience, yet I know that we are all committed to caring
for our neighbour and those around us. While a number of restrictions have been lifted in re-
cent days, we are still in the middle of a pandemic and need to take the appropriate steps to
minimize any potential spread of Covid-19. So, while the Archdiocese of Toronto had highly
recommended wearing a mask while in church and I know that most of you have been doing
so, it is now a by-law that we must follow. Exceptions to the by-law include people who cannot
wear a mask for medical reasons(trouble breathing or unable to remove a mask without assis-
tance)and children under two years old (proof of a medical condition is not required). Thank you in advance for your co-operation as we do all that we can to take care of one an-
other and keep our community safe and healthy. In Christ, Fr. Ignacio Pinedo
