Points of Discussion• Definitions
• Types of Reciprocating Saws
• Main Types of Blades Available
Definitions• Reciprocating: an alternating forward and reverse
motion• Saw: any tool that is hand or power driven composed
of a sharp metal blade used to cut materials• Motor: a device that converts any form of energy into
mechanical energy• No Load Speed: range of possible speeds of the
blade measured in strokes per minute. • Blade Stroke: distance covered by the blade per half-
cycle• Shank Capacity: the maximum blade height that can
be fitted into the unit.

Main Types of Blades Available• 3” to 12” in length, thickness and heights varies• TPI (teeth per inch): ranges from 3 to 18- more
teeth allow a smoother cut but slower• Teeth may vary in shape- granular, wavy,
triangular…
1. Bi-Metal – composed of two types of metals, high durability (some strong ones are composed of 8 % cobalt)
2. Carbide Steel Coated - used on extremely hard or abrasive materials such as cement and tile
3. Tungsten Carbide Tipped (Granulated with carbide) – fast cutting for wood, plastic, fiberboard…
Summary• Blade stroke, TPI, no load speed are some
terms applicable to other things.
• Many types of blades available such as: fire & rescue bi-metal, u-shank bi-metal, demolition bi-metal… with its own unique design for a unique task
