How to Be Persuasive

The goal is to change someone’s mind or way of thinking about a topicVoice and body language are very important
Elements of Persuasion:
Body language – proper posture gives the message that you are confident
Elements of Persuasion:
Pronunciation – it’s important to pronounce each wordAvoid slangDon’t slur wordsAvoid saying things like “you know”
Elements of Persuasion:
Pitch – refers to the highs and lows of the voice.Avoid a monotone.

SpeedAbout 140 – 160 words per minute is the normal pace for debatingAvoid speaking too fast
Elements of Persuasion:
Pause – the pause is a critical tool.Use pauses to emphasize a certain word. Pause before and after a word for special emphasis.

Volume – use with caution.Don’t scream but projecting your voice to the back of the room can be very effective.
Elements of Persuasion:
Variance means changing pitch, volume and speed. Never go more than one paragraph without vocal variance.
