• Came in search of riches, adventure, and the Fountain of Youth

• Discovered Florida• Probably landed some where

Who was Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon?

• A lawyer appointed to a judgeship on the island of Hispaniola

• Became a sugar plantation owner- worked by Indian slaves

• Many of his slaves died from diseases

Why did Ayllon travel to North America ?

• He needed more slaves to work on his sugar cane plantation

Where in Georgia did Ayllon try to establish a settlement?

• 1st along the Carolina coast• Then in McIntosh County, Georgia• On what is today Sapelo Island
