AT&T Fiber Cut – Causes Disaster Event
Michigan Broadband Services™ Sault Ste. Marie Area Fiber Cut Causes Outage
CARNEY, Michigan USA
At approximately 8:30 PM on November 17, 2013, and of unknown origin, AT&T experienced
a fiber cut to their mainline fiber feeds entering the Sault Ste. Marie central office. Classified as a
“disaster event” the cut affected an estimated 3,000 customers and 19 Gigabit links that feed
various cell towers in the area. ….
The service was fully restored on November 18, 2013 at approximately 8:00 PM. The cause of
the cut remains undetermined.

End User’s Benefits
Benefits Fiber monitoring features
• Shorter MTTR
• Truck rolls reductions
• Minimize SLA penalty
• Gain customers by accepting SLA with
shorter MTTR
• Demarcation between Fiber and NE fault
• Fault location within 5 min instead of hours
• Longer MTBF
• Optimize truck rolls
• Give confidence to customers / SLA support
• Detect fiber degradation & locate fault before
the service is affected
• Optimize spending in cable deployment,
renewal
• Facilitate the design of transmission network
• Measurement of actual length and attenuation
• Increase network & data security

Solution: Optical Network Management System (ONMSi)
Fiber optic networks provide voice, video & data transmission for
many applications such as public safety & transportation. They
also interconnect vital public services such as electrical
substations, water wells and pumping stations.
Challenge
Difficulty of maintenance coupled with ensuring resiliency of
fiber network. Also requires high level of expertise.
Time to repair is also very high.
Solution
Viavi ONMSi solution help to characterize the network to
produce baseline performance standards and reduce MTTR.
By placing remote optical test units (OTUs) at strategic
points in the network, ONMSi solution is able to ensure
network coverage at a minimum cost
It also provides immediate visibility into network performance
at any given time.

Wi-Fi CellAdvisor Solution
UBR (Un-License Band Radio), operates in 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz band, mainly
used as P2P Link connectivity, either for Small Cells or Wi-Fi deployments.
As UBR is un-license band, many Opcos across globe use and deploy UBR
Radios, to use it for P2P connectivity. And due to its growing use in Cellular
deployments, it has increasingly become crowded and more prone to
Interference.
Viavi’s CellAdvisor (JD7x8B), along with Antenna Advisor DF Handle and
Directional Antenna, can be used to identify direction and channel, with lowest
Interference (low RSSI), during Installation of UBR P2P radios.
Solution is unique (first in industry) and helps in saving time-money to identify
better link direction options for P2P UBR Radios, improving overall Customer
experience of Network.
