Holiday Party
Recap
3
Hello Chapter Members,
Hope Everyone had a happy holiday
season. We all enjoyed the wonderful
holiday party at Los Prados. Thanks goes
out to the Holiday Party Committee. You
did a fabulous job. It set us in the mood for
a joyful season.
Welcome to all the new members. We
are so happy you are joining the chapter.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year
of painting and friendship with all our
members.
Our outgoing board has done a
wonderful job and are to be congratulated
on their service.
Please read your newsletter faithfully so
you are well-informed. The website has all
the information that should guide us
through the coming year.
January is a
business meeting.
The project is a
pansy basket,
wood on a glass
bowl. Please do
your prep work so
this project can
be accomplished
in one day. I look
forward to teaching this class with all of you
who have signed up.
The board will have their first
meeting January 4. The meeting is at
Gwen’s. If you have any questions please
call Sheila at 702-658-2383.
Here we go on another fun filled year.
Happy new year 2019!

Happy New Year!
How do you celebrate the beginning of a
new year around the kitchen table? One
memory I have is about black eyed peas. My
mother-in-law, Phyllis, loved them with
honey and thought it was good luck to eat
them on New Year’s day. Not me! No
amount of honey could make them tasty! I
learned that I could skip them after there
were grandchildren at the table. Then the
attention was more on them and less on me!
Sneaky of me, wasn’t it?
Do you have any delicious traditional
New Year’s foods? If you would like to bring
some snack or treat for our meeting on
Saturday, January 12, take this as an
inspiration and please bring something
yummy for sharing.
But you can
keep my share of
the black eyed
peas! Sweet treats
or savory snacks.
Finger foods would
be appreciated, but
it is not necessary
to bring forks,
spoons, plates, or
napkins. I will take
cake of those items.
And don’t forget to bring something to
drink for yourself. Thank you very much.
See you in January with paint and
brushes, I hope!

Pro g r am s Hello Fellow Artists!
I cannot tell you how excited I am as new programs
director to be able to help you through your artistic
journey this coming year. Not only am I thrilled to be a
part of SSTDP, I love the sisterhood and comaraderie we
share through being a member. We help each other stay
passionate about our favorite pastime, wouldn’t you
agree? Glean ideas, share successes and failures, develop
friendships. So let’s get started. 2019 here we come!
First, take one more look at our beautiful calendar
for the coming year, even download it on your phone or
computer for clear, crisp images. We need motivation,
right? Put a big fat star on your personal calendar for
those classes that get your creative juices flowing.
(Choosing ALL of them is perfectly acceptable, even
encouraged.) Peruse your stash for surfaces and set them
in a prominent place in your craft space. Then get on the
web and find a few pieces for those you don’t already
have.
I found the grooved, snowman tree for Gwen
Palmer’s October class on the Artist’s Club website,
www.artistsclub.com. I found the surface for Kaye
Singer’s July workshop, Mrs. Whoo-ligans, on the Bear
With Us website, https://www.bearwithusinc.com/. I
also found the tall, holly-topped board for Linda Sharp’s
November workshop on the Bear With Us website as
well.
We also have an invaluable resource in our President
Sheila’s husband, Mark, who cuts wood for us. We so
appreciate him! Watch for further information here
regarding upcoming months’ surface availability.
In January we will be having our business meeting
with a paint-in taught by Sheila Hughes. It is a lovely Gigi
-Smith Burns pattern with pansies and a bird house.
Class fee is $10. Sheila’s flowers are amazing, and it will
be great to learn from her. The wood is available from
Sheila, but first you must sign up for the class.
The prep instructions you will receive upon signing
up. This is most conveniently done for all of us at the
previous month’s chapter meeting. That being said,
PLEASE NOTE: How I r oll a s prog ra ms cha ir
will be convenience and order! I don’t do chaos well. As a
busy mom of eight (yes! 8) with teenagers still at home,
and weddings and grandbabies coming up, I won’t be
able to run around distributing prep sheets. Please get
with me EARLY to sign up and get your prep sheets. I
WILL mail prep sheets if necessary, or you can pick them
up at my house, if you are paid up to TWO WEEKS IN
ADVANCE of class. An easy way to remember is, if you
haven’t paid by the last Saturday of the preceding month,
or December 29 for Sheila’s
class, you will miss the class!
Again, payment is best done
at chapter meetings, but you can
pay up to two weeks before class
and still get a prep sheet. This is
not only more convenient for me
and you, but for the teacher as
well, who needs to be able to
plan her class accordingly. And
patterns not picked up at class
time will be held until I see you
again next chapter meeting, not
mailed. Thank you for supporting me in this!
February 9 will be a workshop taught by Cathy
Frazier, fee $15. The little house with the frame around it
is a delightful design by Trudy Beard with spring
blossoms and a bluebird. The frame and insert is
available from Sheila. If you think you would like to
order, please contact Sheila right away so it can be picked
up at the January meeting along with your prep sheet.
In March, Shayron Monahan will be teaching an
inspiring American eagle design by Barb Halvorson, fee
$15. Begin planning your surface now for this class, it can
be painted on a wide variety of objects.
In April, get excited for our Basics 101, Round Robin!
It’s going to be lots of fun with freebies and make-it take-
it projects, fee $10. We will need to change the signup
deadline for this one to one month earlier than usual, or
February 23, so we can plan on extra time for shipping or
shopping at Creative Painting Convention for teacher
supplies and brushes. Don’t forget to sign up at the
January or February chapter meeting for this one!
That being said, take time to paint what speaks to
you personally. I don’t want to be director of one more
thing for you to do. When you look at your surface stash
and patterns, do you still see that one project you want to
finish, or that pattern you’ve been dreaming about
painting? Keep the dream alive and go for it! Here and
there, in between responsibilities and when you need it,
take time to paint. That’s how our painting dreams come
true, one stroke at a time.
That’s all for now, see you at Chapter!

Just some quick notes to you all about the holiday
party. Thank you again to my wonderful, amazing
committee. You were the best group I could have asked
for.
Yes, it was a lot of work that lasted most of the
year! Whew! But look at the fabulous results! We had
such a fun, fun time.
The Holiday Party is really the highlight of the year,
so I hope whoever takes on the duty of chairperson, has
super helpers like I did. I will be there to give advice and
help with painting to whoever it is and so will other
members, I know. We have such fun brainstorming,
painting, and getting to know each other at those
meetings.
One more time I just
want to list their names:
Beth Buckwald, Terry
Boyd, Toni Downen,
Mary Kate Erickson,
Cathy Frazier, Pat
Gettemeyer, Judy
Gibson, Liz Herald,
Sheila Hughes, Sandy
Kilgour, Barbara
Paetzel, Gwen Palmer,
Pat Serrano, Kaye Singer,
and Nanette Hilton.
