Welcome Autumn!!
Masks & Booster Shots. The summer has been hot and wearing a mask is no fun, but coronavirus cases in Massachusetts and all around the country have risen due to the highly contagious Delta variant. The CDC has recommended that even fully vaccinated peo-
ple mask-up indoors. Statewide, the Department of Public Health is advising fully vaccinated people to wear masks indoors in public areas, especially if you have a weakened immune system, an underlying condition that would put you at risk for severe infection, or lives with someone who is at risk or un-vaccinated. This is for the sake of everyone. Please be considerate.
Booster Update! It is recommended that everyone to get a Booster shot for protection against the new highly contagious Delta variant of Covid-19. The Governor has stated that it is likely to follow the process of the last rollout with healthcare workers, nursing home residents and people aged 65+ to get the booster.
Governor Baker will update us as to how this will roll-out as soon as the plans are in place.
Line Up to Line Dance...We have all been sitting around more as Covid has kept us captive. Let’s get back into action at The Senior Center!! Line Dancing and the Parkinson’s Fitness program will keep everyone moving in the right direction! Step-up and get going again with these great programs. Check the calendar for more class listings.
The Supportive Day Program x 4. Socialization and activity help keep us moving and thinking, which are keys to healthier living. The Supportive Day program is happy to announce that we are adding a 4th day. The Supportive Day program will run Monday through Thursday. If you have ever heard the hooting and hollering around the Senior Center, it is this group enjoying various fun games, crafting, word contests or just snack time. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to have a respite from care, and for the Seniors, a chance to be social. Call the Senior Center for more information if you or someone you know would like to join in the fun.
The Summer Concert Series is Back! The Friends of Danvers Recreation will host concerts at the Danvers Rotary Pavilion on the lawn of the Peabody Institute Library. All concerts begin at 5:30 pm so don’t be late for the following performances: August 31st - Disco Dream Band, September 2nd - The Perfect Crime Band and September 25th Squeezebox Stompers. All shows are generously sponsored by GMC Danvers and Mead Web Designs. Rain dates TBD – for more information or updates visit, www.DanversConcerts.com or on the We are Danvers Mobile App

Learn to coupon with Judi - Did you know that you can save 30-80% on your groceries? You can spend as little as a half hour of preparing in advance to save on
your weekly grocery bill. Do you know how to “double up” on a sale? Do you know where to find coupons? Join Judi Martino on the first and third Monday of the
month ( Sept. 20th from 10:30am-11:30am) to learn how to organize your coupons; share cou-pons ideas and information. Note: Monday Sept. 6th is Labor Day so there will not be a class.
Mr. Fix It is here the last Thursday of each month. This month they will be here on Thursday, September 30th from 9 AM-11:30 AM. Are you left in the dark be-
cause your lamp doesn’t work? Is your toast not toasted? Bring in any item which does not work properly to Mr. Fix It and we will evaluate and repair if possible. Due to space
limitations, if you cannot bring your item personally on the 30th, please do not drop off your items until the afternoon of the 29th. Please make sure to tag your item with your name, number, and the issue with the item.
Podiatry Clinics are back!!!! Dr. Gregory Van Ess, DPM is returning to the Senior Center to help you with your foot care needs. He will be here Friday, October 15th and Friday,
December 17th from 9 AM-1:15 PM by appointment only. You must bring your insurance cards with you. If you need a referral from your physician, please do that in advance of your
appointment. Please call the Center at 978-762-0208 to schedule your appointment.
Coloring is every Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 AM According to psychologists, coloring is the best alternative to meditation. Coloring allows you to unlock your creative
potential. Perhaps more important, it helps relieve tension and anxiety. It also unlocks memories of childhood and simpler time. All supplies are provided! If you plan on
coming and need transportation, please call Lorene to arrange that. You can also sign up for lunch that day also!!!

ACTIVITIES
WALKING CLUB Are you ready to get out and enjoy the fresh air and see each other? Our Walking Club meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9 AM (weather permitting) We will be walking the path at the Senior Center/Highlands School. Each lap is between 1/4 and 1/3 of a mile. You walk as much or as little as you like at your own pace. Plenty of park-ing at the senior center. If you are interested in joining us call Paula at 978 762-0208
x104 and leave your name and phone number. All are welcome! We will follow guidelines of social distancing and mask wearing. We are going to join the Mass Council on Aging (MCOA) Walk Massachusetts Challenge from May 1-September 30th. For each person who completes the challenge the DCOA will get an entry in-to a drawing to win up to $1,000! There will be prizes available for walkers also. You can sign up online at www.mcoaonline.com/walkma and enter Danvers in the COA block. Or, paper logs are available by contacting Paula at 978 762-0208. If you already use a step tracker…it counts the steps for you. If you walk a regular route and do not have a tracker, contact Paula and she will figure it out for you. You do not have to be a member of our walking club to participate, but please let us know that you are joining us on this.
BOCCE Currently, practice only will be held on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am, weather permitting. Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen and water with you!
Book Club: Thursday, September 23rd from 2-3 PM. The book will be: “Count the Ways” by Joyce Maynard. Plot: Eleanor and Cam meet at a crafts fair in
Vermont in the early 1970s. She’s an artist and writer, he makes wooden bowls. Within four years they are parents to three children, two daughters and a red-
headed son who fills his pockets with rocks, plays the violin and talks to God. To Eleanor, their New Hampshire farm provides everything she always wanted—summer nights watching Cam’s softball games, snow days by the fire and the annual tradition of making paper boats and cork
people to launch in the brook every spring. If Eleanor and Cam don’t make love as often as they used to, they have something that matters more. Their family. Then comes a terrible accident,
caused by Cam’s negligence. Unable to forgive him, Eleanor is consumed by bitterness, losing her-self in her life as a mother, while Cam finds solace with a new young partner. Over the decades that follow, the five members of this fractured family make surprising discoveries and decisions
that occasionally bring them together, and often tear them apart. Tracing the course of their lives—through the gender transition of one child and another’s choice to completely break with
her mother—Joyce Maynard captures a family forced to confront essential, painful truths of its past, and find redemption in its darkest hours. A story of holding on and learning to let go, Count the Ways is an achingly beautiful, poignant, and deeply compassionate novel of home,
parenthood, love, and forgiveness. Please email Paula at pcorcoran@danversma.gov or by phone at 978 762-0208 if you will be coming.
Parkinson’s Fitness is Back!! We are happy to inform you that we are resuming our Friday, 1-2 PM Parkinson’s Fitness class. This group will meet every Friday beginning September 10th.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
To All Volunteers,
As we begin to resume activities and programs and are open again I would like to reach out to all former volunteers to ask if you could contact me to let me know if you still want to
volunteer and in what capacity you may like to volunteer. Because it has been so long since we have needed any volunteers I am starting from scratch, which means I will need all returning volunteers to fill out paperwork again.
If you haven’t volunteered before but would like to please let me know. I will also have
paperwork packets at front desk that you can fill out and return. I will also need to make a copy of your drivers license when you return the paperwork.
We are starting off slowly so we may not have a position immediately but will keep you in
mind when things get busy again and opportunities present themselves.
Please email me at candre@danversma.gov or call the senior center for more information.
I would also like to thank everyone who has volunteered in the past and hopefully we will
see most of you here again!
All volunteer forms are available on our website. Go to https://www.danversma.gov. then go to: Departments, Senior & Social Services, Volunteer Opportunities.
Contact the Danvers Council on Aging at 978-762-0208 or
email Cathy Andre at candre@danversma.gov
Medical transportation is available to Danvers residents age 60 or older, and/or disabled Danvers residents under the age of sixty. It is suggested that resi-
dents make transportation requests as early as possible for scheduling purpos-es. Due to high demand for booked appointments, we will get you to your ap-
pointment on time, however, you may need to wait for a return ride home. Individuals in wheel-chairs can be accommodated. Medical transportation service is available from 9:30am until 2:00pm Monday through Friday for all Danvers appointments. Any out-of-town– appointments
are considered individually in terms of how they can be accommodated. The suggested trans-portation donation is $1.50 each way ($3 round trip) donation for appointments within Danvers
and $2.50 each way ($5 round trip) donation for appointments to the adjoining communities of Peabody, Beverly and Salem. For ease of donations, we are offering seniors the option to pur-chase a donation punch card for $30. You may purchase a donation card at the front desk.
Please call Lorene to schedule a ride at 978-762-0208.

Monthly Book Club 2-3:30pm Led by Paula Corcoran No Cost
Book Club: Thursday, September 23rd from 2-3 PM. The book will be: “Count the Ways” by Joyce Maynard. Plot: Eleanor and Cam meet at a crafts fair in Vermont in the early
1970s. She’s an artist and writer, he makes wooden bowls. Within four years they are parents to three children, two daughters and a red-headed son who fills his pockets with rocks, plays
the violin and talks to God. To Eleanor, their New Hampshire farm provides everything she al-ways wanted—summer nights watching Cam’s softball games, snow days by the fire and the an-nual tradition of making paper boats and cork people to launch in the brook every spring. If
Eleanor and Cam don’t make love as often as they used to, they have something that matters more. Their family. Then comes a terrible accident, caused by Cam’s negligence. Unable to for-
give him, Eleanor is consumed by bitterness, losing herself in her life as a mother, while Cam finds solace with a new young partner. Over the decades that follow, the five members of this fractured family make surprising discoveries and decisions that occasionally bring them to-
gether, and often tear them apart. Tracing the course of their lives—through the gender transition of one child and another’s choice to completely break with her mother—Joyce
Maynard captures a family forced to confront essential, painful truths of its past, and find redemption in its darkest hours. A story of holding on and learning to let go, Count the Ways is an achingly beautiful, poignant, and deeply compassionate novel of home, parenthood,
love, and forgiveness. All are welcome! Call Paula if you will be attending.

Increasing Fiber in Your Diet Can Improve Your Health Fiber has an important role in digestive health. It can be found in foods like fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts or seeds. Eating a diet with enough fiber can prevent disease (like cancer and diabetes) from developing. Fiber can also maintain bowel regularity and get rid of constipation. Adding fiber to your diet may also help you maintain a
healthy weight.
TIPS:
• Eat a variety of fiber-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables each day
• Drink PLENTY of fluids to keep your digestive system running smoothly. Set a goal of at
least 8 cups per day.
• Choose whole-grain bread, crackers, and pasta.
• Add small amounts of wheat germ, wheat bran, oat bran, or rice bran to foods you cook.
Top casseroles with wheat germ or wheat bran.
• Add beans, peas, and lentils to soups, stews, and salads.
• Eat fruit and vegetable skins/peels. Scrub vegetables and fruits well before eating.
• Add grated vegetables to meatloaf, meat patties, casseroles, and sauces.
• Used pureed vegetables instead of cream to thicken soups.
• Eat fresh or canned fruit in place of fruit juice.
• Have 1-3 servings of fruits and vegetables at each meal.
• Quickly steam fruits and vegetables so that they remain colorful and crunchy. This
technique can enhance or preserve nutrients in your food.
• When baking, choose recipes that use whole grain flour instead of white flour. Many
recipes that use white flour can be baked with half the amount of whole wheat flour.
• Try brown rice. Brown rice and many other whole grains contain more fiber than white
rice. Taste difference tends to be minimal.
• Add raisins, grated carrots, chopped apple, or diced pear to salads, cereal, bread recipes,
or muffin recipes.
• Use beans, wheat germ, oats, or wheat bran to replace some of the meat in recipes such
as meatloaf or lasagna. Add a variety of grains to soups. Try barley, brown rice, or whole wheat pasta.
