Aaron commutes to work by bike and bus while his family uses one car. Biking helps him exercise and feel more mentally acute – plus, it saves money and sets an environmentally responsibly example for his two children.
Jeff and Mandy save $245 a month in bills by driving a gas/electric Toyota Prius and an all-electric Nissan LEAF. Along with putting fewer emissions in the air, they have made an affordable, sensible family investment.
Ley and Suzanne power their home and heat their pool with solar. The seamless solar system gives them a year-round way to monitor energy use, track savings, and feel good about helping the planet.
Can you ride your bike to work one day a week? Or work from home? Or make fewer car trips by combining your errands? In one year you will drive 520 fewer miles, reducing CO2 emissions by the equivalent of 520 pounds a year. #driveless
Did you know there are over 16 electric and 40 hybrid models of all shapes and sizes? Used hybrids start at under $5,000, and new electrics lease for $200/month.
Going from a 25 mpg gas car to a 50 mpg hybrid reduces CO2 emissions by 6,000 pounds a year. Going to an electric car reduces CO2 emissions by the equiva-lent of 9,000 pounds a year. #chooseelectric
Not ready to invest in solar panels? The “solardryer” – also known as a clothes line – is an easy, low-tech way to take advantage of Santa Barbara’s sunshine. Drying two or three laundry loads outside every week can reduce CO2 emissions by the equivalent of 200 pounds a year. #gosolar
I pledge to drive 10 milesless each week.
I pledge to consider an electric or hybrid car for my next car purchase.
I Pledge to dry my clothes outside 2 - 3 times a week..

HOW ARE YOUGOING GREEN?
Stop by the Community Environmental Council booth and make a pledge to take action on one of our fi ve major initiatives: Drive Less, Choose Electric, Go Solar, Ditch Plastic, or Eat Local. You’ll automatically be entered for the chance to win prizes that support your pledge – including a Tesla Model S rental package, a new beach cruiser, a basket of local food, and more.
Ley and Suzanne power their home and heat their pool with solar. The seamless solar system gives them a year-round way to monitor energy use, track savings, and feel good about helping the planet.
Georgianna joined the Eat Local challenge and learned to fi nd food she loved locally. Farmers Markets and stores had all she needed to be an eco-friendly consumer, and introduced her to new favorites, from raw honey and sprouted almondbutter to zucchini noodles and artisan cheese.
Maddie, Jesus, and Karina ditch plastic by carrying refi llable water bottles. Whether at Santa Barbara High School or around town, having a bottle handy allows them to keep their bodies hydrated while eliminating waste to protect the planet.

With a year-round growing climate and FarmersMarkets held almost every day of the week in our region, it’s easy to create a diet that emphasizes locally grown produce and whole grains. You’ll fi nd lots of support through efforts like Meatless Mondays and the Eat Local Challenge. Going vegetarian one day a week will reduce CO2 emissions by theequivalent of 200 pounds a year. #eatlocal
