Apparel Design and Merchandising News
Runway 2016: On April 28th at the San Francisco Design Center, our Appar-el Design and Merchandis-ing students took over the Runway and along with the Fashion Network Associa-tion produced the 22nd annual spring student fash-ion show. The show began with 18 technology in-spired or fabricated garments placed on the Runway, followed by 40
looks and 22 lines representing students’ individual statements on culture and society. Damaged cloth-ing collected and donated by the University bookstore was redesigned and constructed into new de-signs making a statement on the problem of waste and re-use. See article at http://goldengatexpress.org/2016/05/03/students-designs-take-the-runway-in-emerge/ Working with the Dr. Hamid Khani and students in the Broadcast Electronic and Communication Arts Department (BECA), videos created documenting the garment creation process were viewed throughout the even-ing. Read more about this event and others organized by the Fashion Network Association at

SFSU Library Displays: Students in the Visual Merchandising and Promotion class, ADM 569, had the opportunity to create vis-ual displays in the 2nd floor of the library throughout the semester. A first time oppor-tunity, students explored the library and high-lighted unique findings from the archives to digital printing in their displays.
Goodbye to Dr. Kelly Reddy-Best
Dr. Reddy-Best is moving on to teach at Iowa State next year. We all wish her the very best in her new home and continued successful career. We will miss you.

Dietetics News
Cooking contest Laura Duggan, a dietetics major, has received the ConAgra Foods Foundation Scholarship for $5000 which will pay for her graduate internship that leads to her RD certification (she was accepted to the very competitive dietetic internship at UCSF). Part of the requirement was to develop an interactive event which ConAgra funded as part of their home food safety campaign. Her project title was “cooking clean is cool” and consisted of a cooking event on April 20 in our Miele Lab in Burk Hall where students competed in a 50-minuite meatball-making contest. Products were judged on appearance, taste, smell, and overall acceptability; but learning about food safety was the main goal of the project.
This year, the match rate for dietetic internships, including current and former SFSU DPD students, was 55%, well-done! Some of the dietetics programs our students will attend next year include SFSU, Golden Gate, UCSF, LA’s VA, Aramark, Morrison/Chartwells, and Cornell University. Congratula-tions to everyone and best of luck on your continued paths in the field of nutrition and dietetics! CFS/D Student Dietetic Association was very active on campus this year. They held a cook off at the Farmer’s Market and also had a three day tabling event for National Nutrition Month.
Dr. Gretchen George and Wanda Siu-Chan at-tended the California Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic’s annual meeting in Riverside in April. Dr. George presented a poster on her research and Wanda hosted several student events as the VP of Education Council. They, along with sev-eral interns, were honored to meet Dr. Evelyn Crayton, the President of the Academy of Nutri-tion and Dietetics.

Storybooks Created for Underserved Children. Ivana Markova’s FCS 312 students again this year created storybooks for children at the Compass Children’s Center, an award-winning early child-hood education center in the S.F. Tenderloin. Na-tasha Yim, Bay Area children’s book author, worked with students on culturally and linguistical-ly sensitive writing. Students developed both the stories and illustrations. The books were presented to the children on April 28 and many were shown in the CFS/D Senior Showcase.
CFS/D Senior Showcase
Seniors in CFS 600 Professional Development, taught by Dr. Ulase-wicz, and DFM 451 Nutritional Assessment in the Community, taught by Dr. George, displayed their work in Apparel Design & Merchandising, Dietetics, Family & Consumer Sciences, and Interior Design at the CFS/D Senior Showcase. The spring event took place May 9-13 in Burk Hall 334/336. Senior Visual Merchandising and Promotion students staged and displayed the showcase items for viewers. The promotional poster and postcard were created by Christine Ng. Congratulations to Best of Show recipients honored for their achievements.

Interior Design News
The Advanced Interior Design Solutions class held their annual exhibit, Ex-aggerated Elements from April 25-29 at the S.F. Design Center Galleria. This year’s theme was to create a furniture prototype which included an ex-aggerated element of design. The exhibit, under the guidance of Dr. Gus Vouchilas, also included student design of the entire display. The promo-tional postcard was designed by Madeline Harris along with Dr. Vouchilas and the promotional poster was designed by Regina Atwal, Monique Tiffer, and Nicole Santoni. Special thanks to the S F Design Center for their con-
tinued sponsorship and for providing our students with the opportunity to showcase their work at the Center. Thanks also to our vendors and donors for their generous donations, to the reception organizing committee: Shirley Tran, Cassie White, Queenie Yu, and Casey Fiebig, and to our guitar soloist, “James.” The ASID@SFSU Chapter and the students in the Advanced Interior De-sign Solutions class partnered with the Mid-Peninsula Boys and Girls Club in order to develop design concepts which could be integrated into the center in order to develop an enriched environment for the children, the teens, the club administra-tors, and the families and friends of the BAGC community. The students in the class created inspiration wall designs which were on display at the Art Gallery on campus during the month of March and additionally, created complete renovation designs that were predicated on evidence-based design research findings combined with core concepts found in family & consumer sciences methodologies. The AS-ID student chapter will continue its process of developing design ideas to be imple-mented over the coming months, at the center, as a hands-on community engaged
learning and contributing experience. Congratulations to the incoming AS-ID@SFSU Chapter Board of Directors: Natalia Vikhreva (President), Shel-bie Engelgau (Secretary), Vyanca Soto (Social Media Chair), Michelle Reber (Events Coordinator), Michelle Sanchez (Treasurer), Asma Almahbashi (Fund Raiser Chair), Jasmyne Miller (Sample Library Coordinator/Outreach Coordinator), Jessica Alvarez (Outreach Coordinator), and May Mon Ong and Bethany Wu (Sample Library Coordinators!)
