Church CovenantHaving been led, as we believe, by the spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior,
and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and ofthe Holy Ghost, we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joy-fully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.
We engage therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for theadvancement of this church in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spiritual-ity, to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly tothe support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospelthrough all nations.
We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to religiously educate our children; to seeksalvation of our kindred and acquaintance; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, andexcessive anger; to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage, and to be zealousin our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.
We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember each other in prayer; toaid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech;to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rules of our Savior tosecure it without delay.
We moreover engage that when we remove from this place, we will as soon as possible unite withanother church of the same faith and order, that we might carry out the spirit of this covenant and theprinciples of God’s word.

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBEROF
ST. JOHN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
There are three (3) ways to become a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church:
1. A Candidate for Baptism.
a. One who has never accepted Christ and now will confess belief in Him. They must have a willingness to let Him rule their life andseek repentance for past sins. Baptism by immersion signals the death and burial of past sins through a cleansing process; therising up out of the water, as a new person, a new life, a Christian life.
b. Any person coming from a non-Baptist church, (if that person has never been baptized by a licensed, ordained Baptist ministerprior to membership in the non-Baptist church), is required to come as a candidate for baptism.
2. One may join by Letter.
The prospective member will bring or request a letter from the Baptist church he is leaving. The letter notifies the receiving church thatthe said person was a member (in good and regular standing), and desires a change of membership.
3. One may join by Christian Experience.
The prospective member comes to us from another Baptist church with a statement - some reasons given (moved from area or city wherehis church was located); some choose to join with other members of the family, convenience, etc.
BAPTISM AND COMMUNIONBAPTISM SERVICE IS HELD AT 10:30 A.M. EACH FIRST SUNDAY IN THE SANCTUARY.
Baptism is the Pledge of our Allegiance to Christ. Baptism is commanded in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). It is the believer’s first publicact to confess his faith in Christ. It is ordinarily the door into the invisible, local church. It is the initial ordinance (Acts 2:41, 8:12; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 1 Peter 3:21).
The act of baptism involves a personal obligation on the part of the believer to promote the cause of Christ, represented by the work of the church. Thetrue New Testament Church is a soul saving, baptizing, teaching, preaching, evangelistic institution and the baptized believer is now a part of that greatmissionary world-wide ministry. We are united by the Spirit in the worship of God in praise, in thanksgiving, in prayer, and in the diffusion of the savingmessage of Christ to every creature. We are joined together in the body of our Lord for instruction, for spiritual growth and for mutual helpfulness. It isa great, glorious, mighty, significant day when we are baptized into the body of Christ; the bride and church of our Lord.
Communion is held each first Sunday morning in the sanctuary and is administered by Pastors and Deacons to members of the church, who are in goodand regular standing. “Forsake not yourselves from assembling.
POLICIESThe church policy is based on the New Testament teachings, and the unfolding of the Old Testament.
REGARDING MEMBERSIt is the policy, with the approval of the church, if, any tither has any type of financial emergency to arise that is not met as a result of insurance or tither’scompensations; the church will come to the rescue of the tither, such as a case of sickness, accident or death. The church will aid in such expenses.
As it relates to the method of discipline by the church, each member will be disciplined according to the New Testament. The member will be in no waypermitted by the Pastor or administration of the church to disturb the peace and harmony of the church. In this matter of discipline, when a memberdisregards the regulations and policies of the church, the member will be required to apologize for disregarding the specific policy, and will be restoredby the church. Until this is done, the active participation of membership by the member will be discontinued.
The general policies require a church handbook, which carries the organizational structure of the church, to enlighten each member on the operation ofthe church. Through orientation, each new member shall be properly informed regarding all details and policies of St. John Missionary Baptist Church. This church is not governed by a directory or manual written by an individual who is unfamiliar with the operation and interpretation, as given by thePastors, who are the under-shepherd, and are led by the Holy Spirit.
As a church, we are committed to the teachings of the New Testament, and the unfolding of the Old Testament. Under conditions relative in thegoverning of this church, the church is sovereign and autonomous, plus separate from the state. This church is independent to carry on its affairs as itrelates to its governing policies. As a church, we will not tolerate any interference by any other church, body, movement, call or government to alter anydecisions made by the church. As a church, we are committed to this policy where the matter of discipline, doctrine, policies or practices are concerned.
Any member or group of members, who attempts to involve the St. John Missionary Baptist Church (whose central place of worship is located at 5700North Kelley, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) in the courts of this land, as it relates to the governing policies, practices and discipline, will be in direct
defiance of St. John Missionary Baptist Church. They will be disciplined, and the only way they may be permitted back into the fellowship of the church orhave a right to vote is by coming before the church at the 10:45 A.M. worship service and apologizing for violating policy. The member or members willbe restored to active fellowship after apologizing before the church. This, however, does not have anything to do with the property or legal laws of thestate, but on inspired scripture. BIBLICAL REFERENCE: 1 Corinthians 6:1-8
If a member misses paying or attending one month, they will be notified through the publication of the Individual Financial Record that is issued eachthird Sunday of the month. If the member misses paying or attending the second month, they will be notified, and will be asked to make some disposi-tion. The third month missed will cause the member to be notified that he/she must come before the church and apologize for the delinquency. Until thisis done, the member will have no voting power or active relationship with the church.
REGARDING DEVELOPING THE FAMILY STRUCTUREGiven that the family is an institution created and ordained by God and the development of strong Christian family units is the life blood of a strongvibrant church, Saint John Missionary Baptist Church advocates the development of strong Christian families.
The church supports and endorses all forms of Christian rites of passage, mentoring, and parental development programs to strengthen the family.
The church is committed to promoting, through proclamation and instruction, healthy monogamous marriages, and violence free relationships.
The church is committed to the promotion and development of the Family based upon biblical principles and Christian values.
The church upholds the institution of marriages according to the Scripture, which is the marriage of a man and a woman in holy wedlock according to theHoly Scripture as articulated in the Old and New Testament.
The church will provide marital counseling and marital ceremonies only when the Christian biblical pattern for marriage, as outlined in the Old and NewTestament, is the premise for a couple uniting in holy matrimony.

REGARDING COVERING THE FIELD - MAINTAINING CONTACT WITH THE MEMBERSHIPMembers will be organized into groups, by birth month that will be known as Parish Fellowship groups. Each group will be comprised of at least threedeacons, one coordinator and group leaders. The Parish Fellowship Group Leader will contact the deacons and members. The deacons will help insolving all problems that arise.
The Parish Fellowship will meet each Wednesday night before the first Sunday of the month. Leaders will make reports to the coordinator, and encour-age their members to come to fellowship.
We will engage in prayer for the workers of the program of this church. The Director of Christian Education will give a message on some phase ofevangelism or other subject that is deemed appropriate. The outreach program of St. John Missionary Baptist Church shall include religious services innursing homes, senior citizen homes, correctional centers and jail/prison on a voluntary basis. Our local preachers will do this as the demand arises.

A. The Pastor and administration reserves the right to set aside any officer or officers who fail to carry out the practices and policies ofthe church, or cause any problems in their role as an officer of any auxiliary, department, commission or group. It will be understoodthat the officer will be given every possible opportunity to adjust or make whatever correction is necessary before any action istaken. This is done with the intent of preventing any undue unrest, disturbance, balance and premeditated unchristian act on thepart of any officer or officers. The goal of St. John Missionary Baptist Church is to operate harmoniously in unity and unison.Christian brethren are to resolve their differences in the spirit of Christ as recorded in the scriptures. Thus, we are to presentourselves as living sacrifices, as a harmonious group, first to the people with whom we work in the church, and second, to theoutside world.

DEDICATION OF BABIES
On Mother’s Day of each year, the church has a Babies Dedication period. All mothers with babies born between Mother’s Days are given specialrecognition. Mothers and babies are invited to sit together in a reserved section of the church during morning worship. The Pastor leads the congregationin a Prayer of Christian Dedication and blessings for the infants and parents.
Church HistorySince 1919, St. John Missionary Baptist Church has served the Oklahoma City community as a beacon
light, directing individuals toward a life of worship and praise to Christ and His principles. St. John has a longhistory of growth in both membership and ministry that has required the continual expansion of physical facili-ties to meet those needs. Written below is a retrospective accounting of how St. John has grown through theyears.
St. John Missionary Baptist Church was organized on January 12, 1919 by approximately 80 members, withDr. W. D. Hill as the first Pastor. The church operated under his leadership until September 1919, when he wascalled to pastor a church in Missouri. After Reverend Hill’s departure, the congregation searched for a newpastor while the deacons of St. John lead the church. In August 1920, Reverend John Wesley Johnson from St.Louis, Missouri was invited to conduct a revival for the church. This added approximately seventy-five mem-bers to the congregation, and as a result, in September of 1920, Rev. J. W. Johnson accepted the call as pastor.
During the early days of its existence, the St. John church family was worshipping in a “Hide House.” A“Hide House” was a factory type one-room building used for curing meat products located on East Main atStiles Street, near what is now downtown Oklahoma City. Rev. Johnson began his pastorate by moving thecongregation from the Hide House to what is known as the “Dr. Light Building”, a more desirable location forworship, located several blocks away at Second and Geary Street. However, with a rapidly growing congrega-tion, Rev. Johnson began to lead the church to search for a site more suitable for permanent worship. Four lotswere purchased in the southeast area of Oklahoma City where most of the Black population resided. However, astute observation revealed that Blacks had begun to move to the northeast area of the city at a rapid pace. So,in March 1921, a second purchase of lots at Northeast Second and Phillips Street secured that location for apermanent place of worship.
By September of that year, a 30 x 60 foot frame building was purchased at a cost of $310 to be placed on thenew site, and it became the first permanent church home for the St. John church family.
The church membership grew rapidly under Pastor Johnson’s leadership, and by 1924 it was apparent thatthe frame building, which had been quite adequate at the time of purchase, was too small for the rapidlygrowing membership. And although worship continued there under very crowded conditions for the next twoyears, more space was needed for this growing congregation. A building program was launched at the Secondand Phillips Street location that began with a 60 x 70 feet basement. It would be used for worship until addi-
tional funds could be raised to complete the planned two story facility. In less than two years, the basement hadto be expanded because of continued congregational growth and that project was completed in 1928.
Then, in 1930 – in the middle of the Great Depression – the St. John church family baffled the communityby launching a building program to erect a sanctuary over the basement in which they were worshipping. In1931 Pastor Johnson became gravely ill and had to leave the state for a period of rest and recuperation – rightin the midst of the building project. With the aid of Mrs. J.M.C. Amos, a strong Christian woman famous for herfundraising ability, and the strong leadership of the church’s deacons, the membership prayed, gave and workedas the church went up bit by bit. According to historical accounts, everyone contributed as best they could.Much of the labor for construction was donated by members of the church. Some sold dinners and sandwiches, some walked to work to save bus fare in order to contribute to the building fund. They held all night prayermeetings, and then went to work the following day. Some say the church was built by a miracle, some say it wasbuilt by prayer. However it is described, only God — with a group of committed Christians — could have donesuch a thing at such a time. Pastor Johnson began to regain his health and was able to resume pastoral respon-sibilities early in 1933, and shortly thereafter the sanctuary was completed. The church held a grand “EntranceCelebration” on the first Sunday in June, 1933 thus beginning a St. John Church tradition to celebrate on thisdate each year.
Some years later, Pastor Johnson’s health began to wane again. He approached the church with a request forassistance, and recommended his son in the ministry, Reverend Walter K. Jackson, Pastor of the Corinth Bap-tist Church in Ardmore, Oklahoma. After Rev. Jackson prayed about the move, he and his wife, Eula Leeaccepted the invitation. In June 1945, he became the Assistant Pastor.
Pastor Johnson’s wisdom, experience and dedication to God, combined with the highly intelligent, depend-able, God fearing and strong leadership qualities of Pastor Jackson made a great team for “this, the Lord’sChurch.” Co-Pastor Jackson had graduated from Bishop College in 1937 and brought a variety of new ideasand progressive methods to the church. He had observed a critical need in Oklahoma City and across the statefor religious training of ministers and laymen. He suggested that the church establish an institute to teach theBible and Baptist doctrine. He felt that the institute could serve a dual purpose as a living monument honoringand recognizing Pastor Johnson while providing a means to teach, educate and train ministers and laymen intheology. In September 1949, the Johnson Memorial Bible Institute (JMBI) was established with Rev. ThomasD. Callendar as its Dean. Through his able guidance, the Institute met its goal and provided training to manystudents across the state.
Co-Pastor Jackson realized that additional space was needed to expand the educational ministries of thechurch, and he proposed the addition of an educational building. This proposal was accepted by the church andin June 1951, a ground breaking ceremony was held. In one short year, the $150,000 three story building wascompleted and St. John held another “Entrance Celebration” on the first Sunday in June, 1952.
The years of Christian growth and service to God and the community continued. Then, there was a period ofsadness for our church. In 1960, Mother Hattie Johnson became gravely ill, and on December 24, ChristmasEve, she passed. On September 1, 1961, less than a year later, Pastor Johnson passed, also. These events, though grievous, did not stop the church from moving forward. It created courage and faithfulness to Godwhich has carried it through other difficult times. Now, Rev. W. K. Jackson was the Pastor of St. John, andunder his strong leadership, the church continued to grow, teach and serve.
In 1970, a City-wide Urban Renewal Project moved many of the residents and businesses surrounding thechurch to other areas of Oklahoma City. Pastor Jackson, under the direction of the Lord, led St. John to pur-chase nine acres located at 5700 North Kelley Avenue. He stated, “I came to the meaningful conclusion that wemust walk by faith and not by sight.” The church had the land, but needed finances to build a new facility.Individual members made yearly pledges, and finally a bond drive secured the funds needed to start the con-struction. A ground breaking ceremony was held the first Sunday in June, 1977. Two years later, the St. Johnchurch family was ready to move into its new edifice, valued at $1.5 million dollars, and a huge “EntranceCelebration” was held on the first Sunday in June, 1979. The ceremonies included a 7 A.M. prayer meeting, breakfast at the church site on Second and Phillips and a motorcade across the city.
The St. John family continued to grow with the new church facility and a number of new ministries, staffand activities were added or expanded throughout the late 1970s and the 1980s, including a Drama Ministryand a Children’s Church worship service just to name a few. A most significant addition to the St. John staffcame in 1984 as Rev. Major L. Jemison came to Oklahoma City to serve as Assistant to the Pastor for Rev.Jackson before becoming Co-Pastor in 1988. This college educated and committed servant brought his ownprofessionalism and a wealth of new ideas for ministry to the St. John church family. Under Pastor Jemison’sexceptional leadership, additional innovative ministries have been created or reactivated such as video andaudio ministries, praise dancers, the Physical Fitness Ministry, Evangelism Ministry, Prayer and VisitationMinistry, Hospitality Committee, and the Social Services Commission.
With the growing membership, staff, ministries and activities, the church was again in need of additionalspace. Therefore, in April, 1985, a $1.25 million bond drive was launched for the second phase of construction
at the Kelley Avenue location. During the second phase, the “John Wesley and Hattie Johnson Manse” wasrelocated and restored at our present location in honor of their memory. Their home has been dedicated as theHeritage House and contains valued historical records, documents and memoirs of the church.
The new addition to St. John was completed in 1986, and on the first Sunday in June, 1986, another “En-trance Celebration” was held, this time for the “W. K. Jackson Family Life Center”. This structure consisted ofa new library, expanded kitchen facilities, theatrical facilities, class rooms, office space and a nursery.
Pastors Jackson and Jemison shared the desire to see that children would be provided with a safe, Christianatmosphere for learning. With that in mind, the Church gave birth to the St. John Christian Heritage Academyin 1989; the Academy is a pre-school through sixth grade program that enjoys full-accreditation from theOklahoma State Department of Education and an average enrollment of 120 students per year. The theme of theacademy, “Stand Tall, Think Tall and Live Tall”, supports the objective of developing students to be caring andself-disciplined and to demonstrate a positive moral character while achieving academic excellence. Now in its28th year of service to the Oklahoma City community, the Academy is in need of additional space and morepermanent facilities.
After intensive prayer and following the leadership of the Holy Spirit, Pastor Jemison and the St. Johnchurch family embarked on a building program designed to meet that need. The construction was financed bya $1.5 million bond issue which was launched during the month of September 2006. This new facility (shownbelow) is attached to the east side of the existing educational facilities and contains approximately 17,000square feet of floor space with six new classrooms, administrative offices, a library, a science lecture/lab room, and a computer training facility.
