What is a

Hydrometer??

A hydrometer is an instrument used to check the relative

density of a liquid ie, to see if one liquid is denser than

another. This instrument rises and sinks in the liquid according to its density. Hydrometer will sink deeper in the less dense liquid but float higher in the

denser liquid.

Aim:

• Used to check the density of liquid.

Procedure

First, use a bit of plasticine at the end of the straw.

Then, it will be like these.

Furthermore, add some soil into the straw to add some

weight.

A simple homemade hydrometer is done. Then

we should use it to test different density of liquid.

We should prepare a marker pen to plot

the level.

Pour a glass of tap water into a beaker.

After the beaker fill with water.

Now vertically stand the straw in the tap water in

such a way that the end with plasticine is below the water

surface.

Mark the height of the straw above water

surface.

Then, pour the tap water out and wipe dry inner of

the beaker with tissue. Next, we use the

homemade hydrometer test the density of beer.

Pour a glass of beer into a beaker.

Now vertically stand the straw in the beer in such a

way that the end with plasticine is below the

water surface.

Mark the height of the straw above beer surface

on the same straw.

Next, let us test with cooking oil.

Now vertically stand the straw in the cooking oil in

such a way that the end with plasticine is below the water

surface.

Mark the height of the straw above cooking oil

surface on the same straw.

Discussion

Mark for:

Tap water

Beer

Cooking Oil

Generally, density of water is about 1,000.00 kg/m³,

density of cooking oil is less than

water and density of beer always

more than water.

Therefore, the mark of cooking oil will be on top, the mark for

water will be second and the mark for beer will be last. This is because

the density of cooking oil is the lowest and the density of the beer is the highest in these three types

liquid.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, the density of cooking oil is the lowest because the hydrometer sink denser and the density of beer is the highest because the hydrometer float higher in these three

types of liquid.
