Myobservationoverthelast30yearsinthisprofession,firstasabusinessownerofaninspectioncompanyandthenworkingfornationalfirms,isthatonceaninspectionisdone,fewcirclebacktothereferralsources.Mostwillheadbackouttofindthatnextnewagent;thatnextinspection.Everyagentandcustomeryoutouchisareferralsourcewithfuturepotential.Manytakethereferralsourcetoacertainpoint(thebookedinspection)andthenthat’sit.Gettingthecustomerisahugeinvestmentoftime–nottomentionprintmaterials,snacks,treats,andothergoodies.Ifyoudon’tnurturethoserelationshipswithmeaningfulfollow-up,you’lllikelyspinyourwheelsinthiscareer,wastetime,andmoneyandeventuallybegone.

Iheardrecentlyinasalespodcast–"followuporfallonyourface".Atextoranemailthatsaysthankyouis,inmyopinion,lazyandweakandoverlooked.Ahandwrittennotepowerfullyremindsthemofwhoyouare.Aphonecall(evenifit’safriendlyvoicemailmessage)isagoodpractice.Anddon’tjustsendONEnote–followupwiththemroutinely.Getwildandevenaskthemfortheirfeedbackaboutyourserviceandhowyoucanimprove.That’swhatsuccessfulbusinessownerspractice.Listentopodcaststoincreasetrainingonretainingcustomers–andgetitfromplacesotherthanotherhomeinspectors.Youmayfindsomethingthatworksbetterforyou.

Don’tfoolyourselfintothinkingwhenyougetaninspectionthattheyarenowYOURagent.There’sreallynosuchthing.Otherinspectorsarevyingfortheirbusinesssoyoumustnevertakeanyreferralsourceforgrantedregardlessofhowlongyou’vebeeninbusiness.It’sallupforgrabs.Ifyou’reanexperiencedinspector,Ihopeyou’renotunderestimatingyourreferrals.
