UNIT SIX CLASS NOTES PART 1

REFORM, WAR, AND INVENTIONS

PROGRESSIVE REFORMS

1. Rapid development = Lack of services & transportation, unsafe workplaces, & political corruption.

2. Progressive Movement: A collection of reforms to protect consumers & workers.

- Examples: Right to vote for women & establishment of federal income tax

PROHIBITION

1. Attempts were made to make the production, selling, & buying of alcohol illegal. 2. Reasons in support: Alcohol caused crime, abuse of women/kids, & debt3. The 18th Amendment made alcohol illegal.

- WA still “wet”, got alcohol from Canada- Not easily enforced, often ignored by

police

SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT

1. Women were not allowed to vote or serve on a jury.

2. In 1871, Susan B. Anthony and Abigail Scott Duniway helped to form the Washington Woman Suffrage Association. - Used protests & rallies to gather support

SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT

3. In 1910, the Washington State Constitution was amended to grant women the right to vote.

- This was 10 years before the national suffrage amendment was passed.
