What is metacognition?

What is metacognition?

•“the awareness and knowledge of one’s mental processes such that one can monitor, regulate and direct them to a desired goal.” (Harris and Hodges, 1995)

In reading, metacognition is knowing

•what is already known •when an understanding of new

material has been accomplished•how that understanding was

reached•why something is or is not

known

The importance of metacognition in learning•Well developed metacognitive

learners:–accurately assess why they succeed in learning.

–Think about inaccuracies when failure occurs

–expand repertoire of strategies for learning.

- Match strategies to the learning task, and make adjustment–Are confident–Ask for guidance–Take time to think-View themselves as continual learners and thinkers.

The importance of metacognition in reading•Readers using metacognition

will –Recognize reading strategies they use

–Know which word recognition skill to apply when reading

–Read actively

–Guide and monitor understanding

–Acquire knowledge meaningfully

–Adjust reading strategies to maximize comprehension

–Predict further content in text–Think critically and logically

Using metacognition in Math

•Mathematical Problem Solving entails–stating a plan –clarifying task requirements–reviewing progress–recognizing error –detecting new development.

Using metacognition in reading

•When used–Before–During–After

•What is involved –Knowledge –Self regulation

•Before / Pre-reading activities–skimming text–formulating questions–Activate prior knowledge–…–…

•During reading activities–self questioning–Applying fix up strategies–Mental imaging–…–…

•After reading activities–Summarizing–Making story map–Making inferences–…–…

•Knowledge includes awareness of –self as a learner –task demands –relations between text, prior knowledge, and reading strategies and reading comprehension;

• Self-regulation includes–combining metacognitive knowledge

–planning–monitoring understanding –identifying and remediating causes of comprehension failures

Metacognitive strategies or examples in reading

•Think aloud•Rereading and reading on•Scanning•Tapping into prior knowledge

•Monitoring reading•Predicting •Applying fix up strategy•Prereading •Visualizing •Figuring out unknown words

Conclusion •Metacognition is like a salad

– A reader- controlled strategy used before, during and after reading

–Knowledge and self regulation mix to facilitate reading comprehension (metacomprehension)
