In my first project in SCI-Arc, I did several sections then use triangles to connect them. The ideas are very simple: I just selected several interesting sections for people to stay then used staight lines to conenct them.

The three sections helped me built two part of the project. I created several narrow spaces and several corridor to ramp on and ramp down.

I gained alot from this project: different scales of triangles are connected points to points or edges to edges. The sections are the only rules to judge the space in this project. The process of the modeling is different from the project I did before. I made foam model, paper board model and styrene model. I hope the model could be dramatic and dynamic. But when I built the final phisical model after I have the Rhino Model. I found the I have structure problems because the heavy weight of the model. So I have to change some details on the model.

1GA light weight:

The first practise in 1GA is about section. We did alot of section study in this semester. At first, we used foam to do as much study as we can. Then we built Rhino model and styrene model of the section. We focused on a frozen moment of people. To study the space of the moment, section is one of the most effective way.

Inside- outside, Two skins are two main ideas in my project.

1. Inside - outside. Open the roof, you could found are programs having their own space. You even could access any roof in this building. When you are in this building, you could feel like you are out of several buildings. Then you could find you are under a big roof.

2. Two skins. The weather in LA is great. The big roof is the first skin, and the walls for all programs are the second skin. Different skins could help the building to have more interesting spaces.

When all programs are affirmed, I dropped them in boxed and started to do roof studies: I tried different kinds of roofs to make the building look like a whole thing. And the roof itself is the combound of roof, wall, walking ramps and some windows. You could remember the building because of the simple figure and easy-recongnize envelop.

1GA: gray matters:

The second practise in 1GA is about a library building. It lacates on the third floor of our school. For us, libray is one of the most familiar building. As our f irst building practise in SCI-Arc, we focused on the circulations analyze and programs.

PROJECT PROGRAM:

The activities I chose are HURDLE, POLE VAULT, TRAMPOLINE,PARKOUR, SKATEBOARD, HIGH DIVING. They are all about jumping. They are all olympic games and everyone can take part in it.With HURDLE, you will try to jump one time every certain distance. Jump in a fast speed in rhythm and jump forward. The area will be long and narrow.In POLE VAULT, you will try to jump as high as possible. With pole’s help, you could reach a height you never have before. The area will be long and narrow plus small square.With TRAMPOLINE, you could jump easily without hurting your muscle. And because of trampoline’s help, you could try to do more activities during you are in the sky. So you could stay in the sky longer and have a high frequency in the sky. The area will be square. In these kinds of “jump” sports, you could find that people’s bodies are in tense and you can tell the dynamic and orientation. In the moment, body is not in balance, but the aesthetic and the tense are impressive and hard to catch because of the high speed. With hurdle, you could jump forward; with pole vault, you could jump high; with trampoline, you could jump high in a high frequency. The equipments body depend on are still, while body is dynamic. I wish the space I creat could guide people to jump sequentially. And at the same time, I will try to have some figures to present the dynamic and the still part which support the dynamic.

Jump while run -jump after run- jump jump I hope both plan, section and the encloser of the design can tell the the serise of sequence. They are differnent in the enviroment requirements. But with my connection, they can work as one whole thing.

1GB project study:

PROJECT THESIS:

JUMP is most and only important activity in my project. I think jump is a interesting activity: you could jump in any orientations. You could jump with different equipments. Jump is one of the most part in any sports. From exercise one I got the idea to shift similar modules to create a whole space. With small module, when you shift them and add them on, you could imagine jump on it.

With jumping and shifting, I try to compose these two ideas and create an interesting building.

fruit study:

In 1GB after midterm, we worked in pairs to practice on doing variations on two different kinds of fruit. We did 2D diagram analyze, 3D Rhino models and 3D phisical model. This practise asked us did all kinds of study we can do to present our ideas about the variations of two fruits we have.

In these project, we work in pairs. My parterner is Welson Chang. Our fruits are strawberry and jackfruit. We hope our projects to be more resonable. These two fruits are totally different. Before midterm, we all select the surface of the fruit to be our main patterns. But because we need to mix these two fruit together, we try to get some inspirations from the structures of two fruits.

“Solid, practical, and beautiful”were the first three words I took to heart when I began my study on architecture. My understanding of these words developed during the course of my study. I believe that the ideas behind these words are the origin of every step in making a design and the best standards for judging a piece of work. My instructors inspired me to enhance my knowledge and to use it in the professional arena of design. After much pondering, I realized that it is not only the elements of design that I should consider but the costs, problems in architectural technology, clients’ peculiar requirements, landscape, cultural environment, and government policy as well. Moreover, I became awareof the importance of having extensive knowledge on the subject you are working on, be it a landscape design for a small garden or a cooperative design for a skyscraper. Despite their simplicity, the words “solid, practical, and beautiful” are the most important yet difficult requests an architect could ever meet.
